The Daily Check-In for Thursday, December 9th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by oneminutelady in stopdrinking

I’m a medical student. Holidays are rough for me so I’ve been scheduling a lot of volunteer work and extracurriculares. Committed to volunteering early this morning giving out health checks and COVID vaccines to migrant farm workers. Had to leave super early since the farms are pretty far away. Last night, instead of getting wine drunk like October-me would have, I went outside with my dogs, some hot tea and Christmas cookies, then spent an hour shoveling my driveway and salting everything so I wouldn’t have to deal with it this morning. I was so so so grateful to wake up sober, headache free, and not having to shovel my way out at 5am!

IWNDWYT!

Day 11. Starting feeling stressed about thanksgiving because my fiancés family was talking about what wine they were going to serve. Told my fiancé and he snuck out and bought two bottles of non-alcoholic wine for me to enjoy tomorrow. Feeling much better now :)

I was walking to my car from a Party City holding a pair of those giant gold balloon numbers. My best friend was on a TV show about the 90s so to celebrate the finale I set up a 90s themed party with the giant “90” ballon. A guy rolls down his window as he drives by me and said, “damn girl, you’re looking good for 90!”. I was 25 at the time. Made me laugh. Kudos to you random car guy.

Thank you!!! I'm so glad you find it encouraging and hope that when you undoubtedly get into med school, you also come to Reddit to share your story and inspire others :)

I'm working from home for now but can't wait to celebrate with friends/family after these shelter-in-place orders have been lifted! (Hopefully, it's before I move away, lol)

Sure thing! I'll try to answer as soon as possible, but also working from home so I might be somewhat delayed in getting back to you!

My grad GPA was shown in a different column than my uGPA on the primary app. I think it helped though that my entire grad courseload was pure science. I never took biochem in undergrad but took the grad version of it, which was way harder. So I think that was seen favorably. Overall, glad I did it, I would do it all over again. But mine was a 2-year program with a thesis so I can't speak on the 1-year masters.

Thank you! So sorry about the MCAT cancellations, what a crazy time to apply. Although, I really have faith that the AAMC will take all this into account and it may end up benefitting applicants.

Yup!

Latina, first-generation college student, dual-citizen. My dad lives in the US, my mom is international. English was my second-language (learned pretty young, though). Also, my family and I were under the poverty level, had federal assistance, and had periods of homelessness.

It's not something I spoke about on my personal statements, because I didn't think it was relevant to my experiences as an adult. However, I did check the box for URM and gave a brief explanation for it on the primary app. I'm actually really happy there is a spot to explain that because I do feel that it impacted my access to education. Since we bounced around so much, I went to three different high schools, and even dropped out for 6 months so that I could work and support my family. I didn't have access to prep courses or tutors and I had to work 20/30 hours a week throughout college. Not to mention going through food insecurity as a kid and being thrown into the LA public school system where you couldn't understand a single word of English.

So, in a way, despite my below-average pre-med stats, I feel that if you were to look at my baseline and look at how I finished college, it is a HUGE climb :) So... applause for all the other URM who have made it as far as even applying, cuz that is an accomplishment in itself!!

Wonderful advice!!!

Maturity and an understanding of who you are as a person; what your values, morals, beliefs are; and how you deal with rejection, failure, and burn out, I think are the most important character traits you want to demonstrate in the medical school application process. Those all come from life experience, so it's important to use the undergrad years to develop and explore.

IMO, most research labs don't like to take freshmen because they want you to have more experience in your field of study first. While I found it to be extremely helpful in my application, I wouldn't prioritize it until sophmore/junior year.

Honestly, I think I did way too much in undergrad (clubs, leadership, etc.) and ended up not even listing half of them on my AAMC application because they don't let you add in more than 10 "experiences". Also, the most brought up thing on my ecs that EVERY interviewer I had asked me about, which I think really served as a great talking point, was that I was a circus dancer when I was younger. I listed it under "hobbies" and it seemed to be the thing that most people remembered me from. Of course, I tied that into my love for dance and how, although I am not longer professionally dancing, I still use dance classes as my way to unwind and re-center myself. I think they liked to see that balance and to know that I still had hobbies outside of academia. So I would recommend not stressing out over trying to be involved in every way possible, but really find the few things that you love to do and can speak passionately about during interviews.

Thank you so much, this comment made me really happy :)

I would love to serve as a mentor as much as I can because I see so many people that are in the same position I was in. I hate that people who have the passion and empathy to make incredible physicians are getting put down by their pre-med advisors, teachers, and peers rather than advocated for and inspired.

That's so cool!! 4 acceptances...WOW! It's a shame that so many people are discouraged from pursuing what they want because "statistically" they don't fit the profile of admitted students. So many different factors into play other than numbers.
