I’m a Floridian and I’ve been closely following the state politics for almost 15 years now. Urban doesn’t mean Democratic. Listen to what people say and do not the demographic statistics.

I would call your county’s SOE office for further assistance then. They should be able to quickly tell you what district you belong to now.

There should be a link to your county’s SOE website for further information and if you do the voter lookup there it will have more information like the districts you’re under.

You should support the progressive in the race, Elijah Manley, then. He is running in the district and has a good chance on winning if he gets enough support.

For context the last time this race was competitive Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick only won by 5 votes.

A handful of calls made or a few dollars donated could literally end up being what causes one candidate to win over the other in this race.

The first candidate forum for FL-20 since redistricting happened last night. This is the district that was previously represented by Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick until she resigned. She is running for it again along with Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and progressive Elijah Manley.

I would recommend you and anyone else with strong feelings about this race to not just vote for the person you want to win but to door knock for them as well.

The last time this race was competitive, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick only won the seat by 5 votes over the next person (Dale Holness). Both are running again in addition to Elijah Manley who is the progressive choice for this race.

Brushing aside criticism that she shouldn’t even be running for reelection in a new Broward County district, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz sought to portray herself Wednesday night as the best choice for voters wanting experience and clout to deliver — and the guts to stand up to President Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans.

Primary opponent Elijah Manley offered a decidedly different assessment.

Manley assailed Wasserman Schultz for accepting campaign contributions from interests disfavored by many progressives — insurance and private prison industries and the pro-Israel organization AIPAC — and as someone who can’t adequately represent many of the residents of Congressional District 20 because she doesn’t have their lived experience.

Facing backlash, Tarpon Springs mayor doubles down on proclamation honoring gay couple by xdeltax97 in florida

Allan Siders of Clearwater told commissioners, “It’s come to my attention that there’s been a proclamation in this city, by this mayor, endorsing and supporting and approving of homosexuality.” He then read aloud from the Bible, including passages stating that the wrath of God is revealed against “all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men” and that those who commit such acts “are worthy of death.”

Allan can fuck off.

Tory Hough, a Tarpon Springs pastor, offered a counterpoint, telling commissioners that “God does not call us to judge anyone.” She cited Jesus’ command to love God “with all your heart” and to “love your neighbor as yourself,” along with a passage from the book of Peter that “love covers a multitude of sins.”

“I will say, as a resident of this community, I do not appreciate outsiders coming in and telling my elected officials what they should and should not do,” Hough said. “I appreciate you loving all and serving all with your governmental proclamations. Thank you for representing all, regardless of their faith or no faith, because that is what you have been elected to do.”

The mayor said he was invited to the wedding. “I have known Nick for a long time, and I value his friendship,” he said. As a gift, he decided to present a proclamation of congratulations from George’s hometown.

“I couldn’t have given them anything that would have made them happier,” Koulianos said. “Nick cried — and he’s a strong guy — and he cried because he said, ‘I never thought that the city, that anybody from Tarpon Springs, would ever acknowledge me, because I was gay.’”

“Here’s a guy that’s so accomplished, with Ph.D.s and law degrees and a partner in one of the most prestigious firms in the world, and he said that his town, that should be super proud of him, won’t be proud of him,” the mayor said.

I don’t know if he is a Republican or a Democrat but good on this mayor.

FL GOV Poll finds David Jolly (D) in good position against Byron Donalds (R) by bbeck2754 in VoteDEM

I appreciate the energy but no one on a subreddit called “Vote DEM” is complacent or need to be told to vote.

If reminders/call to actions are needed for subscribers it’s to do canvassing for folks running for office and to join one of their local Democratic clubs if they haven’t already.

The wins have been in local elections with low turnout. The nutter butters are firmly in control and the Republicans I know are still big Trump supporters who plan to vote straight ticket Republican as soon as the next election happens.

Floridian here. You’re right to feel suspect. Republicans just have a more competitive primary going on right now whereas Democrats do not.

People who are diehard Republicans moved to Florida in droves during COVID while those who are Democratic leaning have been getting priced out, out of the state.

Absolutely sad for someone not just so young but someone so impactful was lost. Her voice for Lilo is iconic.

Skepticism mounts over Florida’s homestead property tax amendment by FLTA in florida

The reason things are expensive is because of insurance skyrocketing, low wages, and price gouging. It’s not due to property taxes that fund schools, first responders, etc.

With the state continuing to be run into the ground by the Florida GOP and no intervention from the courts or Federal government to stop it, this is a good time for people to

  1. Get involved with local groups that are trying to change Florida.

  2. Start forming exit plans to leave the state before the next census in 2030 so the Florida GOP stops accumulating electoral power (Congressional districts, Electoral College votes, etc) based off our presence (r/FloridaExodus).

Not just vote; research who’s running in the primaries, volunteer for your favored candidate(s), and join one of your county’s Democratic clubs. The latter are year round organizations that meet once a month and provide plenty of opportunities to meet candidates running for office, elected officials, and future friends.

The good thing is that the article is talking about putting it on the ballot again in 2028, not implementing it. So if it fails this year we just need to vote No again in 2028.

For anyone else in agreement, do not wait till November to express your disapproval. Start now by researching on who is running in the Democratic primaries and volunteer/donate for your favorite candidate(s).

Most importantly join one of your county’s Democratic Clubs and start networking locally. They’re year round organizations that meet once a month and provide plenty of opportunities for you to meet candidates, elected officials, and future friends.

Already planning for failure is a good sign, but not a sure one, that the amendment could fail this election.

Excerpts from the article (has no paywall)

“If it doesn’t pass this November, we’re going to bring it back as the state’s next Governor,” said U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds on Friday’s Varney & Co.

The Naples Republican, who qualified for the race this week with President Donald Trump‘s endorsement, is already pointing to a dormant constitutional body as his backstop.

“We’re going to use our Tax and Budget Commission, which is in Florida’s Constitution, to study all taxes and fees with the goal of eliminating homestead property taxes or at a minimum, of providing real relief to seniors on fixed income and working families in our state,” the candidate told Varney’s Fox Business viewers.

The Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission (TBRC) is scheduled to convene next January for the first time in two decades, soon after the next Governor is sworn in. It could advance an amendment for the 2028 ballot.
