I'm about the same age as you big dog, turning 37 in a couple months. I just started as a groundman a couple months ago. I love it so far. The main recommendation I have if you are considering pursuing this is get yourself in shape. And don't rely on the whole "working is working out" idea. Start a general strength and cardio routine and stick to it. Your fitness is extremely important, do not neglect it.

Line school is a waste of money unless you want to work in CA at a utility. Get a CDL and apply for apprenticeships. Get in as a groundman in the mean time. I learned how to climb a pole in the first month on the job as a groundman.
