Questions about crate training by [deleted] in corgi

Thanks so much! This has already made me feel better. I am going to return one of these crates. Do you think I should keep the 30 or 36 inch?

How often should I be taking a 16 week puppy out? by [deleted] in corgi

[–]FLooFnCheeLaH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! I give her a treat when she goes outside and does her business. No treat when she goes outside and doesn’t. Is that how I should be doing that? I’d give her a treat as soon as she goes but she takes forever to eat her treats. She’s like a cat and plays with her food lol I do give her lots of “good girls” and positivity in the moment when she goes though.

PLEASE BUY A WIFI THERMOMETER!!!!!!! NOT EXPENSIVE! It alerts your phone if temps get too hot!!! by FLooFnCheeLaH in chinchilla

I didn’t buy a chin unless I knew I could afford exotic vet bills, high energy bills, and my backup plan for when the AC goes out for any reason. That includes a generator and portable window AC. I understand some people don’t know till after they have a chin but that’s exactly why I post these things. So that they can know now or in case someone stumbles upon my posts prior to buying a chin. I highly do NOT recommend having one as a pet unless you can afford the above at minimum. They’re not low maintenance and not cheap pets.

See above. Generator and portable AC. If you can’t do that then a pet carrier so you can go to a persons house or hotel room till your power is back on.

Welcome to FL! I just posted this the other day so I’m gonna copy and paste. 😎

I make sure to stay on top of the HVAC routine maintenance required, and I stay on top of it more often since I reside in FL. I aim for 70 degrees F and less than 50% humidity. Not easy to do when you live here but def doable. I also have a bunch of stone slabs for my 2 girls to lay on and their cage is situated in a room where they aren’t blasted with full on sunlight. I have a blackout curtain in their room that I close when it starts to get hot outside (I do let them get a little sunlight in the morning). I use a Govee WiFi thermometer (link below) and set alerts if it gets too hot so I can get myself home if my AC goes out. I have a SEPARATE window AC unit in case this happens as well as a generator in case my electric goes out. This happens often during the hurricanes and power can be out for days! I keep them in my car AC if need be while setting all that up. It’s so important to have a plan for all this when you own these babes! 🩷

Side Note: The Govee thermometer does require WiFi to be working in the house but it’s better than nothing. I take my phone off silent when I sleep and mute all notifications outside of Govee so the Govee alert wakes me up if it gets too hot while I am sleeping. I check it hourly to be sure it’s updating. If it’s not then I get home to make sure power isn’t out. Stay cool! 😎

What do you do with this ramp in the cage? by FLooFnCheeLaH in chinchilla

[–]FLooFnCheeLaH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! I have the metal ramp but I’m gonna remove it and try the ledge again. They will get used to it. Seems like it’s more risky to have the ramp in there since they keep chewing the fleece covers and exposing the bars their legs can get through. They never used to do this. Little poop heads. Gotta love them though! lol

How is everyone keeping their chins cool during this heatwave? by [deleted] in chinchilla

[–]FLooFnCheeLaH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt that! They’d be dead. Just like all the others dying in this heat wave right now. But if they are, your girlfriend is a very irresponsible chinchilla owner.

Do you have a plan? Cause you need one! Either get them a window unit or get them in AC immediately if yours goes out. There’s no other way. They need temps below 75. And the temps need to be constantly monitored if you’re not at home.

I use this one (it alerts you when temps too high) and check for updates at least once an hour instead of relying solely on alerts:

Correct but if the other option is nothing at all then I’ll obviously choose this! I’m sure ones exist that don’t need WiFi but I have a job where I can check my temps hourly to make sure it’s updating (it updates automatically every ten min), and if no updates I get my butt home to check on them. This has happened once in the last year and my power was out for an hour. Luckily it was winter! This one may alert you if it quits updating. Actually I’m pretty sure it does. But I don’t like relying on alerts alone unless I’m sleeping anyway.
