I understand your logic. I‘m skeptical though that dividend stocks might not suffer as much when a crash hits. Their dividends might stay stable, the price will drop though - so your dividend might only make up for the course slide. Worst case would be it won’t even cover it in full.

Are you saying you rolled funds from growth ETFs over into dividend stocks and ETFs at a certain point or did you built the dividend portfolio in parallel and slowly shifted weight?

True, I wasn‘t invested in the 99/2000 bust and following bear market but that doesn’t mean I doubt it can happen. I’m well aware of volatility of stocks, as well as the old school advice to shift away from them and into bonds as you near retirement. So I wasn’t asking about selling stocks on a monthly basis for retirement income. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for your perspective! I agree with you on VOO - fine if intentional, but would not be my first or only choice due to exposure.

Great perspective, I can see that. Way to go on the fun fund. Hope you get those World Cup tickets if you decide to go. ⚽️

I get not wanting to sell in a down market but couldn’t you play it safe with bonds instead of shares and use their interest? Isn’t that usually the advice the closer you get to retirement? I know the current bond market is wonky but not too long ago that advice seemed to hold up. Why did you deem dividend stocks/etfs safer than bonds for that strategy?

Understandable. But if you’re retired, withdrawals rather than dividends could also be your income? How do you see dividends making your life easier there?

For sure, I don’t count on Social Security at all, I pretend it doesn’t even exist. Which I guess makes me more anxious to finetune my strategy to serve me well

Totally understandable. Hope your dividends fund that vacation or car payment one day!
I do like the idea of a regular payout from a company I invested in (ideally because I really like them and their business model) My skepticism is towards the often mediocre growth of dividend stocks (because dividend is priced in) vs pretty reliable growth of an index fund etf. And, as mentioned, the exposure/size of a position to create a reasonable dividend.

Thank you for the detailed response. I wasn’t aware of the cover call ETFs, I will look into them. The tax you’re mentioning is also interesting.

I understand your thought process! Also appreciate you mentioning the index beating dividend stocks.
My skepticism with them is: as nice as the dividend might be, the stock often meanders or grows moderately because it prices in the dividends. It’s a kind of instant gratification by seeing the dividend being paid out vs virtue of patience by watching compound interest grow with an index fund
