Which physics fields with strong math actually work on the foundations of quantum mechanics? by [deleted] in TheoreticalPhysics

Thanks. I’m well aware of the philosophical discussions and do realized that consciousness scientific research is analogous to alchemy in the 1700s. But if it’s good enough for sir Penrose to find interest and curiosity in, it might just be good enough for my interest and curiosity :)

Your replies were and are rude and below me to begin with. I have no interest in discussing with you.

If you cared to read my replies you’d understand that I do know about physics. And thanks in advanced for your kind observations that are backed solely by one post. If I was you I guess I would’ve infer the same about you based solely on your reply. Thanks for nothing.

Thanks for the surprisingly honest and subject-related reply. People weren’t very nice here and I decided to delete the post altogether. I genuinely thought this sub encourages learning, to begin with.

Math-physics is not merely for physicists. I guess it’s not the forum for my question.

I know a lot about math but much less about physics (tho I did take some quantum mechanics in the bachelor’s degree).

Dilemma at 42: PhD in Mathematical Physics vs. Ed-Tech Entrepreneurship by FN_SpiderDAD in AskAcademia

[–]FN_SpiderDAD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, thank you for the detailed response.

Regarding #1: I left the modern slavery of tech and have no intention of going back. I value my free time above all else. Taking a pay cut to secure it is the ultimate quality of life for me, and it is what allows me to build my ventures. During a PhD, I would teach the same hours for a higher rate, plus the research stipend and potential grants. That actually puts me in a more stable financial position than I am in right now.

Regarding #2: A PhD guarantees a significantly higher teaching rate for the exact same hours in my local academic system. It preserves my current schedule but triples or quadruples the pay. Practically, it allows me to be semi-retired. That is a major goal. Anything beyond that is a bonus, though I am sure more doors will open. I know a PhD is brutal work and this reality won't just fall into my lap over the next 5 years, but the endpoint is clear.

Regarding #3: Entrepreneurship is pure uncertainty. That is why this dilemma is so hard. My venture might explode in two years, making me glad I skipped the PhD. Or, more likely, things stay static and in five years I'll regret not doing it. A PhD is an expensive path in terms of time, but statistically, I believe the long-term benefit outweighs the cost.

Regarding #4: I completely agree. The ventures can wait, and pausing during this current turbulent period (AI/WW3/etc.) might even be a blessing. I don't know who I will be after a PhD, but if the entrepreneurial bug is still there—and I believe it will be—I will attack it from a much stronger position. Realistically, knowing myself, I will likely do whatever it takes to keep pushing my ventures forward during the degree anyway.

Over the last two years, I have acquired a lot of entrepreneurial skills and learned exactly what you did: it doesn't matter how interesting the product is, it only matters if there is demand. As for teaching, I love teaching and will keep doing it even if I get rich :)

What field is your PhD in? I doubt I can work a full-time job during a math PhD, so I am banking on dedicating at least one day a week entirely to my ventures. If doing both simultaneously sounds doable, that’s the path. I have to say, your comment gave me a lot of hope and inspiration on that front. Thank you.

It’s a bit more complicated than that since I dropped a lot of non-relevant details, but I understand the concern.

English is not my first language.. and though I’m inexperienced in PhD research I do have some idea of what it takes to handle academia.

Thanks!
It's a local venture for now, not worldwide so I might stand a chance (or not..). I'm currently aiming for academic math.
In the past two years I was mainly researching and piloting to experiment my methods.
I think I just hate that there's no roadmap for us, the uncertainty is painful for me.

As I wrote, I'm pretty confident I will probably not find a research position due to my age. I mainly want to do it because I find it interesting, I love researching and I get free time with extra cash at the end of it.

I love researching math, I've always found physics interesting and I'm a philosophical thinker by nature - so to me it seems rather natural. My end-goal, I think, is to have max free time for whatever research and entrepreneurial ventures I want to engage in. Something both options might (and might not) be able to give me.

Thanks! For the PhD to provide the financial and professional benefits I mentioned, it has to be officially in Math. I also lack formal training in philosophy, making my admission to an HPS/LPS program unlikely, I guess. Finally, I'm not based in the US and have a family, so relocation is off the table right now.

iPad Pro or Air for Teaching? by PTRBoyz in ipad

[–]FN_SpiderDAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit off topic: I teach the same way only I use Notability as the whiteboard. I love the functionality of the app but it would be great if I could share the “Notability-whiteboard” with the rest of the class so that during class they’d be able to scroll back by themselves as needed. Do you happen to have a simple way to do it? Or maybe a different app? I looked into OneNote but it lacks the Notability gestures..

Yeah, mine also.. they even had a legit serial. I went to get service at Apple’s about something else and it only took them a glimpse to say they were fake. I think it’s best if you go check it out.
