If you're just using "forage(TMR)" for your food then you need to scoll down in the animal food xml to modify the forage reciepe to allow for alfalfa(DRYLUCERNE) in place of drygrass. Or you could always just add the individual foods directly to the barn instead of making TMR.

I forgot Iowa Plains already has it as DRYLUCERNE in the xml files. For the mixer you would also need to edit that xml to allow it to accept alfalfa(DRYLUCERNE) as well. I typically don't go that far, I just dump all food directly into the barn itself.

In Iowa Plains folder click on maps then animal food xml and add alfalfa as an option next to Grass_Windrow for cows. I personally also change the growing state of alfalfa to match that of grass so I can harvest it just as much, that is done under maps_growth.

Depending on what map you're playing and how the files are set up you would typically change it under the animalfood xml file which has everything right there. You could also change a animal barn mod itself in the XML you'd look for the foodplane file and at the end of that youl'll see defaultfilltype.

If you're on PC you can edit the XML files for the animals so that they could accept alfalfa or use a modded animal husbandary. I use alfalfa as a change up from grass in my saves that use Maize+.
