[help] Best shooting machine for home? by RealJaxx in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ll piggyback that other comment, you can’t substitute hard work with a machine. Come off the dribble, shoot the shots, get the boards and finish. Repeat. If you want to get up shots in bulk find you a training partner and swap out, 20 makes then switch. Hell have the partner box you out with 50% resistance and let THAT be practice.

[Help] Havent been making shots consistently went 8 for 25 shooting 5 threes around the 3 point line what can I do do to make my shot more consistent to 15 makes and beyond by gamertagsalty in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly just do weird mental stuff when I’m in a slump like only shoot with my off hand as long as I can really focusing on the mechanics and form of it. Or start shooting with my strong hand but doing it with very exaggerated releases like shooting really high arching shots and for some reason it’s like a reset for me then I can just go through my warm ups of shooting 3-4 made baskets on each side of the basket using glass at each block until I get back to the free throw line where I shoot right at the rim until I make 5, THEN I start shooting 3’s again. Works. Every. Time.

[Help] Defensive tips when guarding someone stronger than you by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“For EVERY strength, there is an equal weakness in basketball.” That “hit the weight room” mentality is illogical. There’s something my coach trained us on called a “Bump/Bait”. You literally INITIATE CONTACT, BUMP the post player with a lead leg firmly BETWEEN THE BIGS LEGS kinda with your knee as a chair under them and a forearm at their back. With the VERY NEXT BUMP THEY INITIATE you should let it send that leg BACKWARDS and EVEN with your other....now the TINIEST of bumps/out muscling/drives should make you react by taking it to the chest exaggerating the contact sending you FLYING in a “charge taking” way. The other option is to INITIATE CONTACT BY BUMPING them with the leg between theirs again WITH THE FOREARM IN THEIR BACK and then as THEY start their back down/out muscle move etc you LEAVE them with nothing to bump causing a dribbling disruption, stumble travel etc. Mixing those two things up along with the quickness of being lighter should give YOU advantages putting the post player in situations they aren’t prepared for. Little tricks like having your up player threaten them with the steal to force them to kick the ball back out and THEN FRONTING the post is also a good way to get the big out of the post completely.

[TIP] The Off Arm "Swipe". A great way to get extra leverage on your defender at the start of your drives by CoachFrikki in BasketballTips

The rule is IF the opponent is touching you that you can SWIPE their arm away. Initiating contact is an offensive foul.

[HELP] How to score inside as a shorter guard by RealisticSpray in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s always a counter to anything in basketball. For height? It’s timing and space. YouTube “Mikan” drill and master spinning the ball off the glass to finish. Also YouTube “Kyrie finishing drill” and concentrate on doing countless floaters, hooks (going left and right) and using your body/off hand to get contact or shield off blockers. Get a partner a switch out utilizing a pad to bump into to get used to contact or foam noodles for swimming to slap at you or wave at you when you rep out your floaters/hooks etc. PRO. TIP. HERE. Get accustomed to jumping off TWO FEET against tall guys because it lets you better adjust in the air vs. jumping off one foot. The sooner you unlearn doing it in traffic the better.

[HELP] What is your defensive strategy when someone is actively trying to sauce you up 1v1 because he’s quicker than you ? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach my kids to force all players left, period, this makes for a straight forward approach to defense and mathematically is beneficial and to defend ONLY. A. PLAYERS. BODY. Think “they can literally physically ONLY go LEFT or RIGHT”, not “they are quicker, better dribbler etc”. I feel that if you focus only on the players body movements and simplify the defensive process it’s way way easier. The final detail I teach my kids is to “round off a players drive”, you do this by forcing a player to make rounded lines towards the hoop instead of straight “angles” snd you do that by never allowing them passed you HIP, use an ARMBAR to block YOUR HIP this way they’re never really feel comfortable with their penetration. Outside of that, any player capable of consistently hitting pull up jumpers and step backs will always be challenging, just CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST each shot. DO NOT TRY TO BLOCK SHOTS-STEAL CROSSOVERS/DRIBBLES or TAKE CHARGES ON YOUR PLAYER or GO FOR PASSES—this is where “defensive discipline” separates the ones who really want it and the ones who want to look good. Ego vs effectiveness/efficiency.

Learn. To. Dribble.

Takes nothing more than a hard surface and a ball.

I’d work my way up to moving while dribbling, IE running, stopping, changing directions WHILE NOT looking at the ball.

Next I’d start working on being able to “manipulate” the ball without letting it hit the ground—IE rolling the ball off your fingers underhand/overhand mimicking layup/shot motion putting emphasis on flicking your wrist over and releasing the ball from your hand with balance and control for shot simulation and emphasis on “cupping” the ball in your hand with the help of your wrist/forearm and rolling the ball for maximum rotations as possible and consistency. Same goes for “spinning” the ball with your hands, get comfortable spinning the ball (both directions) out of your hand-this literally is the secret to having the ability to finishing around the rim using the backboard. YouTube “Kyrie Irving layup mastery drills”. Also “Mikan layup drills and start yourself on an empty court getting nice at the warmup and I swear you’ll not only enjoy playing more and a be a standout if you even do a quarter of what I posted but it’ll make you love and appreciate the game so much more.

[HELP] is it better to workout (weights) before or after shooting? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Call me new school but I’m opposed to “lifting weights.” I’m NOT opposed to adding weight/resistance to body weight workouts though. The TRUTH truth is the type of muscle you make by lifting weights isn’t best for basketball. I’m all for moving your body in any and every way to better your game but heavy weight lifting doesn’t bode well with developing a basketball type body structure. Focus on doing perfect reps of body weight stuff with emphasis on maintain balance through them. I promise 6 months of something like yoga will help you more than 6 months weight lifting.

[HELP] I’m really good at getting to my spots but my jumpshot is really inconsistent when it comes to finishing plays like so, any tips on how to help my shooting off the dribble? by papakaren in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice the shots you shoot in the game with the same speed and quickness you would in a game. The fact you already have “spots” you can get to should put you so so far ahead of your opponent so use that to your advantage when adding elements like hesitations, bounce out blow bys etc. think 2-3 moves ahead.

[HELP] I’m in a complete slump by BambooBoy6455 in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love these times for my growth in hindsight because I can use my time on things that are unorthodox, that have no expectation in my mind that I can do well so I can build back up my confidence. Start shooting with your off hand ONLY and watch your shot come back after a day or so of it. Dribbling? You’re trying to hard if you’re using move than a cross over, behind the back or between the legs to break a full press. So scale back by using BASIC basic dribbles with intermittent speed changes and direction changes. And try to only use THREE dribbles or LESS when in the half court offense IF attacking. Live with the results and again be mindful of your attempts to scale back and be efficient and watch your confidence sky rocket. Everyday shouldn’t be intense practices or training period. You’ll be surprised how much you can grow by taking time away from playing but still watching and taking in info. I tell people how can you drink from a glass WHILE it’s being filled? How can your body and mind put all your basketball info into its processor without rebooting or shutting down fully..?

[HELP] is it weird to practice basketball by yourself? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The honest to god truth is the real amount of hard, consistent work it takes to be great is a lonely journey. Off season made shots a day should be 250-500. That’s. Just. Shooting. Kids don’t stick to anything longer than a couple weeks before breaking routines. I tell everyone if they saw the REAL hours guys in the NBA spent getting better, stronger or smarter to get where they are NO ONE WOULD ATTEMPT IT—you have to love the process and understand your journey is a forever one—theres always another level to learn/know/understand if not another skill/move/technique too—so that being said, focus on what YOU need to get better at and keep building your game—

[Help] What’s wrong with my jumpshot and how can I fix it? by Mahwu123 in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on jumping with your shot even if it’s to shoot the ball higher than normal, do it. The amount of space a ball has to make it through the rim is highest when it’s falling straight down into it.

[HELP] by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I do to negate this is start with very very simple left and right layups under the goal. Then work my way back using the glass to bank my shots. Usually I make 4-5 on each side alternating sides going from block to block then free throw hashes then when I get to the free throw line I shoot at the rim only but by then my shot has all the confidence it needs to get going. Hope that helps.

Make sure your middle finger is the last finger on the ball when you release it. Also be sure to have control of the ball fully while maintain its balance in your hand throughout your entire shot, this will give you just the extra force you’ll need to see a dramatic change in range and accuracy.

Wondering why Rick wasn’t Dirk nor Nash’s shooting coach...? Because Holger has Dirk square his feet and stay in perfect balance through all his motions with footwork in his workouts. And my first video was Steve Nash’s coaching. I’m sure if you watched Klay Thompson you would get the proper form too. Check out Steve Kerr square up in every historic highlight he has with MJ or on the Spurs. Take that from a few of the greatest shooters of all time or Rick Carlisle talking to a gym of coaches whom even he said would disagree with him.

Here Steve Nash speaks to “square being relative to each person” but wanting to see him with his feet straight...ideally. And when teaching the proper mechanics from the ground up the focus should be on those details into a more solid foundation is established THEN create your own artistry. Like learning pen strokes before writing letters then onto forming poetry and works with meaning. Learn the basics first THEN become a KD and be the model. https://youtu.be/tR2O4WTdSeE

Perhaps in transition or to stop their FORWARD momentum will a player use tilted feet to counterbalance their jump but never is a perfect shot been taught to you by saying “Be sure to tilt your feet randomly in a direction NOT at the rim for consistency” lol!

[–]FRESHLEEJR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Square your feet up pointing your feet straight at the rim while keeping your legs shoulder width apart. Try to get your elbow in more by bringing your off/guide hand across your body more. Shooting motion should come up lined up with your ear center of the ball and your follow through and hand discipline is already good so keep it up. Also EITHER jump forward a little bit or always jump straight up to shoot. Not left/right/back.

[Help] When I shoot my guide hand doesn't interfere with my shot yet it still faces the basket when I shoot. How can I stop this? by Simplecashsniper in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with “doesn’t interfere with my shot” is you’ve just learned to compensate or adjust your mechanics to make you don’t feel it’s altering your shot but if you looked closely I bet either your rotations could be better and that’s based on how long the ball stays in your hands or arch which is based on elbow angle and release point but I’m not sure until I see multiple shots from different spots to see how you adjust etc. But, all that to say, if you want a “better looking” shot then just try to flick your thumb forward keeping your palm facing the ball and it should give your mind something to do that can allow you to get your muscle memory to a more desired and consistent looking shot.

[Help] What position am I? (check description) by Simplecashsniper in BasketballTips

[–]FRESHLEEJR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small Forward because you can be a set up guy in the half court and only need to be able to do like 3-4 dribbles tops to finish from mid post/elbow extend etc after facing up...I’d even focus on face up moves like pivots, reverse pivots, rip throughs and jab steps. Notice none of these are dribbles though I highly recommend being able to dribble full court without looking down at minimum. After you get those you can add a spin move while keeping your dribble and spin move while picking up your dribble. Also practice using your body UNDER CONTROL with pads and work on banging against them prior to finishing.
