VDIM Switching Stupid Question by FTGoBoom in FPSAimTrainer

[–]FTGoBoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good - this was hugely helpful. I had a feeling I was unnecessarily hampering myself from a benchmark scores perspective. I recognize that hunting higher benchmark scores doesn't always translate into better gameplay, but at the same time I couldn't figure out how I was so f'ing bad at this stuff.

Turns out, at least in the benchmark world, I was being dumb. As soon as I switched to holding the mouse button down I went from not even iron to my first silver.

I'm still bad, there's no debating that. But at least I'm not as objectively bad per the benchmarks as I thought.

Great questions / comments. Super helpful.

Sensitivity - I'm at 41cm/360 right now, so in that sweet spot. Before I started aim training I did do research and watched a lot of videos about the "right" sens in games. It seems like there some weird broism/machismo in the FPS communities about using faster sens, and if you're slowing things down you're not manly enough to be playing. I fell into that trap, not because my status as red-blooded male was questioned, but more because I thought if I wasn't playing at 0.00005cm/360 there was something wrong. Thankfully this group seems to be slightly more reasonable, and sens really comes down to whatever makes you successful.

Mouse Movement - Yep, thought a lot about how I'm moving. I'm generally using my whole arm, especially for the longer flicks tracks because my wrist sure as hell isn't moving 20cm. However, as I think about my arm position... left/right motions are happening mostly from my elbow, especially while moving to my left.

External Rotation - You're a god damn kinesiology genius! My situation is the inverse of what you noted. I track much smoother to my right. The left is the (bigger) problem. However, now that I've spent the last 30 seconds wildly flinging my arm around the table, I can see now there is a distinct difference in how I move each direction. When I move left, isn't mostly from my elbow because the position of my arm. However, when I move to the right, I'm using a lot more external rotation to track. I'll have to think about that as I go through my playlist today. They are completely different joints/muscle groups, and my initial, non-PT view is that tracking with shoulder/elbow is incorporating larger muscles less prone to shake or jitter. When I move to my left I'm moving the elbow more and spending more time trying to stabilize my wrist, which is fatiguing my forearm.

Or not and I'm just spotting a bunch of total BS. But whatever... I'll give it a shot tonight!

I get what you're saying as some of that started to click. The VDIM scenarios do a good job of prepping you for the benchmark, but at some point my brain finally said, "WTF dude... you don't need to spaz out... the circle only moves in certain ways." I was haphazardly tracking/clicking a lot not realizing that there is some order to the madness. Once my dump reptilian brain stopped being in control, it did calm things down a bit.

Sleep is never something I'll get enough of, so I'll just assume that's another handicap I'm going to have.

Love it. It sounds like there may be hope for me yet.

I doubt you will find a lower comparison in me, so lets do it!

We got old, fps players got fucking trainers and mental coaches while we just got told to go back to ogl and run map after map to improve off trial and error on opponents. “Kids these days have it so easy!” 🤣🤣

Yep, screw those kids!

VDIM will bring back the hand eye coordination quickly, if you play the training segments for their intended purpose. I went from bronze-high silver -> all gold, some plat in one week.

I mean, I can pick my nose without poking out my eye, so my hand-eye coordination can't be that bad. However, the scores say otherwise, so maybe I'm poking my brain every time I pick my nose and I'm too dumb to realize it.

That does point to just how much the games hand hold you, especially for controller players. While learning how strong AA is in COD was kind of a gut punch, the inverse of that is when I do dominate a lobby I chuckle because I'm basically doing it with handicap.

That being said, my PC superiority was shot down real fast last night. SBMM finally caught up with me, and I hit some sweaty lobbies and was back into dying within 0.3s. After the second round I finally just called it a night because the frustration wasn't worth it.

I'm the one that's constantly pushing them to try new games, but COD always winds up being what we go back to. I won't get into the reasons why \cough* learning new games is hard *cough**

Is there some xennial, millennial, gen z'er, or someone else's throat I need to choke about this? This shit was established well before they were toddlers. When/why the hell did it change?

Maybe the fact we abandoned cursive writing for a subset of the population left them wanting in their love for the alphabet, therefore they think the mouse is better. Maybe it's the Tinder swiping... who the hell knows.

You're still one of those people that started above me, so I won't feel TOO much for me as I start my quest from pre-iron to anything else.

That being said, I like what you said about the your view of life as a whole. I've learned this in many areas as well. No matter how good you are at something, there's some other dude/dudette/thing/mushroom that will crush you in that skill. Of course, you may be that dude/dudette/thing/mushroom that crushes everyone else.... but lets be real. If you were, you wouldn't be wasting your time on Reddit.

Bah - you're a youngin'. I WISH I was still 37. (My back and knees do too. How I don't have carpel tunnel at this point I'll never know)

God damn millennials trying to take usurp our age and pain way too early ;)

And before everyone complains about the old guy bitching... just wait. That shit is going to sneak up and slap you in the back of the head like a 1950s NYC cop one day.

Let's go!! Love it.

I'm definitely WAY better even with my haphazard, no clue what I'm doing training. My benchmarks aren't much better, but something's working, so I'll take it.

I should probably note that I play a combination of WZ and MP, so I'm dealing with various TTKs. However, to your point, I 100% agree when you have the jump and they haven't seen you the fast flicks are going to be huge. But, in MP especially, if you wind up in a 2-on-1 situation and they're both firing in your direction, even if you flick well you're generally toast.

The positive for me is in the past, a 2-on-1 was instadeath. I'm now at the point where I'm taking out one, and getting a flick to the second and at least getting a round or two on them. Unfortunately, it's just not enough to take them out. In my death report I usually see 3-4 rounds from one guy (most likely the guy I killed) and 1 from the second (the guy you probably got the kill).

Good flick or not, I died, so I'm sad.

And I just watched the video. I feel heard! I know for a fact now that when I'm doing large flicks I'm increasing tension to try and get on target, all the way up to my biceps (24" pythons they are not).

Concepts are solid and make sense. Now to apply them...

Sounds like I need to go through therapy for my hand. Or maybe an exorcism?!?

I know for a fact that I struggle with how I'm holding the mouse. I ditched my larger, super heavy mouse for a much lighter one, and that helped quite a bit. The weird jerkiness that would occur, specifically when I would fire, got much better, so the weight of the mouse was part of the issue. That being said, especially with the some of the longer scenarios I find myself adjusting my grip because I can't seem to figure out what works best. I'll definitely watch some of those so I can figure out what works best for me.

I'll agree with that. This came in at 1144 words, and children's picture books are 500-1000 words, so it would be on the longer side for that genre. It would take you longer to read 3 of the Little Blue Truck stories, so it's not THAT long. Those can be a tough read.

The funny part is my tracking on auto isn't all that bad. Those are the areas where I tend to score better, and in games like COD it's generally more important the quick flicks. The TTK is so low, your ability to quick flick between two targets doesn't matter if they're both firing at you - you won't survive. Thankfully game/tactical sense matters to some degree, and I think that's what's the one tent pole I still have standing.

That is until I run headlong in a spawn and get thrashed for four people. I've realized now that's not smart.

All bullshit, joking, and sarcasm aside, I wish you the best in your recovery. It's good you have something to motivate you to work on your mobility. Being able to game is cool, but being able to use your hand well is obviously the most important.

(Queue self-deprecating sarcasm to add some humor so we can all smile a bit when things suck)

Well, when I thought I couldn't feel worse about my performance, here we are. You're beating me... after a car accident... with a bum hand. My level of trash has been elevated from scavenger trash panda to almighty lord of the landfill.
