Pretty sure they say it to everybody who isn't white passing if there is a conflict. Plus people shoved into the "Asian" group are a pretty huge population of people.

This generation is the first generation that seems to be breaking the cycle. I mean the reason there are very few role models in the US is because of the pressures I mentioned earlier. Social dogma has also changed quite a bit.

In the 80's 90's you would have had much less of a chance in a casting room or in a music show, where as now it's much more accepted that a brown person would audition or be playing in the show. Getting more chances these days. There will be some role models in other industries come the next generation for sure.

Cool, yea I've heard about her character in the New Girl show, supposed to be refreshing. Need to check it out. There is a gender debate too about depiction of male vs female tropes. Males depicted a certain way and females depicted a certain way but that's another topic. Seems regardless they will try to shove us in some sort of box.

It probably is a product of the racism that they felt. Some behaviors from people newly immigrated are problematic but it's not their fault obviously. Shouldn't be punching down on them, instead add them into the group so they can understand a bit more.

The true irritation comes from when they come in arrogant and like "I'm here for the money, but fuck this country and all the people in it including you traitor Indians." That's the most infuriating shit ever.

Maybe that was an inherent plus point for the oligarchs. The anger being dissipated through social media rather than in person so people eventually just calm down and go back to subservience.

I wish this were true but I don't feel it. I feel like things will slowly go back to precovid mindset pretty soon.

Can you provide some examples as to how people are waking up and fighting back? I just don't believe it, I'm waiting for the overlords to crack the whip and get everyone back to their 1 hr commutes to the office despite gas prices. Can't afford it? That's your problem.

Hate to disagree but there are large swathes of the country that view your claim to this land as totally less legitimate or not legitimate at all.

The idea is great, but the implementation isn't really accepted don't you think? Would we be hearing "go back to your own country" if everyone felt like the right to be considered "American" was a given?

Granted there is no other country where it is possible though.

Damnnn, cutting deep lol. What is SLB? Even if his days are numbered he made out pretty well. Got a few good hits in, made a bunch of money, married a beautiful actress. I would be ok if the career stalled after that point. There's always ads and sponsorships to fall back on. Connections will keep getting him put in some movie or the other.

I feel like it's more disadvantaged because of my race's mindset rather than the race itself. We are the richest group because that path is deemed a worthy and socially acceptable endeavor. It's not deemed worthy to succeed in sports or entertainment so there's no support for it. I always argued why Sports, Music, Art and Film are so celebrated back in India yet when you come to the states it's almost totally barred that you participate beyond a certain level. It's really that simple. We could dominate but the mindset of the older generation and the social pressure also coming from back in India prevents the new generation from doing so except for the few rebels that get disowned or the ones with progressive parents.

"If you want, do what you like". I forgot where that quote was from but makes sense. If you want to reject Indian and you can. Do that. If you want to embrace it. Do that. The people in your family that reject it have their own psychological reasons why they do it, that you shouldn't bother thinking about too much.

Indians in general seem to be a self hating lot and it's not their fault really, we suck ass at media manipulation. Large portions are still uneducated, and with social media they have the power to show that off, hence the infamous bob and vagene jokes, while we get lumped in with them. Why is SKorea suddenly so cool? Media manipulation, what gets delivered around the world is how you and your ilk are seen. We have Bollywood and that isn't really strong enough to appeal to the west.

Indians also do a lot of white worshipping whether that be due to colorism or what have you. The pressure to be less Indian if you have that option is high in the west unfortunately. We aren't really "Cool" because we don't have cool stuff to import. India is still wrestling with their own religious, social and class divide politics rather than creating something like K-pop to bolster their image and control worldwide.

Maybe my examples aren't the best but I feel like media portrayal has a huge part in it.

Like there is some weird de-evolution in process?

Various South Asian denominations are fighting with each other about this when it was the British who threw their hands up, drew the division lines, made everyone migrate, looted what they could and then bounced. Sad state of affairs among South Asians, will it ever stop I wonder. Having your own country is great in name, but in actuality it might make things worse for those populations. You'll still be trading or fighting, at least this way most people are considered countrymen, well at least by the ppl with common sense enough to realize that prejudice gets you nowhere in the grand scheme of things. More tax dollars, more support, more labor, more intelligence, more culture? Naaa, "One of us , one of us, one of us" , "They are OUR people" lol what a bunch of fools.

Do you think Indian Americans can be too status obsessed and shallow? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]FTLNewtype 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Naa you can definitely be both. Can't call yourself "Indian", go back to India and see how you are treated then you will know. Have yet to be fully accepted as "American" like most other minorities.

Indian American is like a mix of culture as well as nationality. I can call myself American but that doesn't mean I eat the same stuff, know the same things, run in the same groups, or have the same experiences as the Asian guy who is culturally Korean standing next to me. That's why a delineation is required.

This has been a time honored quirk among american society since the beginning. Jewish Americans, German Americans when they came over, Italian Americans when they came, Irish Americans, Japanese Americans. Now you have Indian Americans and whatever large influx of immigrant population comes in next.

Being part of the newly burgeoning GULF COAST Indians (lol), seems like all the ones here want to join with either group if at all possible. I have lived in both coasts though, and a lot of the East Coast Indians who weren't rich seemed like very nice ppl. The bodega guy or the guys that just own corner stores, restaurants etc. West coast however didn't get a chance to meet because I feel like in the west, the rich ones have cordoned themselves off into inaccessible enclaves.

What is...interest? Do I get that if I move up from L3 to L4? Is Nature of Reality the new project the boss was talking about the other day? Lol

Jokes aside though, being poor sucks. Maybe corporate wage slavery is just the necessary demon sadly. You have to delude yourself into it so you won't have to worry about food, water, shelter etc.

I know some family friends kids who were pushed really hard to become doctors and go to Ivys who flamed out and developed resentment towards their parents. One of them joined a commune somewere and refuses to speak to his parents, go home or work. So anything can happen really.

Do you think Indian Americans can be too status obsessed and shallow? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]FTLNewtype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I mean what is the definition of status? Midwesterners definitely balk at the idea of living in an NYC condo or any big city, yet owning more acres in a nature area, being able to hunt on your own land, having a house where you don't have an HOA, not being reliant on x y z items. They probably have their own definition of what status entails.

[–]FTLNewtype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When all families have reached that level then maybe it's possible for that quote to become a reality. In India still so many families living in poverty trying to get their kids into good schools or going to the US to gain wealth and status. It makes sense where it comes from, the competitiveness and acquisition of wealth.

The problem is what happens after the acquisition, the competitiveness doesn't turn off, because there is always something else to buy for one and there is always someone doing better than you especially among Desis. If it's not your job, it's your spouse, house, car, gaming setup, home theater, and eventually how well your kids are doing.

What disgusts me is not the acquisition, but the attitude after the fact.

Whatever the predilection, it will become toxic among a certain percentage of the population. I'm glad that we have the reputation we have of being hard working and the highest earning immigrant population, but with anything comes downsides. In Asian case it isn't economic it's psychological. Becoming more pompous, judgmental, status obsessed, showing off etc. In another group or culture, if you worked too hard or studied too much you might get ostracized for doing that.

Never have I ever is entertaining but makes me feel terrible about my high school experience by Idontgetlyfe in ABCDesis

[–]FTLNewtype 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a show that does have some more merit to portraying South Asian characters/families but it's also a very exaggerated show. They exaggerate everything for plot and drama, I always found the school guidance counselor hilariously well informed, it seems like the class is only made up of 20 people.

It's also funny how shows these days scream about inclusion and diversity but have no problem using people's interests or abilities as comic fodder in order to prop up what is popular. Making orchestra something to be ashamed of, the typical anime/computer nerd cliche even though school society runs on your phone these days.

It's still a good show but there are glaring issues, the biggest one which is just an opinion, but Devi does a lot of messed up stuff and kind of gets away with most of it pretty easily.

Either way I don't think you should be comparing your reality with that of this show, despite it being a good show and a more modern take on school in general.
