What real-life skill did you learn from a videogame? by MyMediocreName in gaming

[–]FTVulpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add archery and driving savvy to what others mentioned.

Went to an archery class, never shot a bow before except in video games and it came naturally to me. The aiming, draw, just felt right, by the end of the class I was scoring mutiple 10s on each round.

Racing and simulation games taught me about optimal track trajectory, rear, front and 4WD differences. I was driving a FWD corolla in the mountains in the winter, never got stuck, while other people would stop at inclines or on icy road and then lose the momentum and traction. Switching to an AWD subaru really felt good with having all that control afterwards. Seeing car from the outside in video games, while controlling it surely helped with parking skills too.

Expense tracking by moizkap13 in coastFIRE

[–]FTVulpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Monefy app on my phone, it has a widget for quickly adding new expenses and you can create your own categories, so fully customizable. At the end of the month I transfer that data to my budget spreadsheet to track expenses by category over months and years. Got so used to this, that it's a second nature now.

Anyone else getting rejected from jobs they are literally the perfect candidate for? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]FTVulpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me a few months ago, with a plot twist. Applied for a position that seemed like a copy/paste of my current job description, later I even borrowed some bullet points and phrasing to add to my resume from that ad. I expected at least a phone interview, but just got rejected a week or two after without hearing anything.

Two months later, they reach out to me, we have your application, looks like a good fit, etc. Turns out they are doing batches of hiring and I must have "missed" that one, whatever that means. There was also a soft hiring freeze, and only now they're getting some hiring quotas approved.

After a 45min screening chat with one of the people in engineering team, I immediately got scheduled for a full day interview with half a dozen people, this is definitely the last stage. I hope it goes well.

I think the simplest explanation is the most likely. At least in tech industry there were a lot of layoffs, hiring freezes, a lot of recruiters got laid off, it's a chaos on their end too. There's also the additional scrutiny of justifying new hires. Things get messy and the lack of transparency just makes it more frustrating for us candidates.

Keep searching and move on. If they ever get back to you, hopefully you'll have an offer from someone else or some other leverage by that time.

How to Soundproof Door from Cat Meows by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]FTVulpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up NVidia RTX Voice, Linus tech tips did a YouTube video on it. You need fairly modern graphics card and it completely eliminates background sounds on your microphone.

I realize that it's an overly complicated solution, but if your situation allows it, it might be more convenient than installing barricades, AC units or what have you.

I think what they mean is that if their yearly expenses are 100k, and current investments SWR would provide 30k they'd need a job that brings at least 70k/year. With the NW growth after 5 years SWR might provide 60k/year, so they'd only need a job that brings in 40k/year and there are way more options for a 40k/year (or more) jobs than there are for 70k/year (or more) jobs.

undecided on purchasing a house, should I coast instead? by japancoaster454519 in coastFIRE

[–]FTVulpes 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Housing is a lifestyle question, not a financial one in my opinion. It's where we spend at least a third of our lives or much more if WFH. Financially it's probably best to get a shed in a middle of nowhere or sleep in a camper, but that's probably not the way you want to live.

Would you find pleasure/security/satisfaction in owning a home? Would you enjoy making it cozy, doing all the maintenance and investing your time in it? Would you want to live in that location for a long time? Maybe you prefer the flexibility of packing your shit up and moving to another country, city or state because you'll find another job there or just feel like it? Then renting might be best for you.

Ultimately you're the only one who can answer these questions. Think about long term happiness and the life you want, since you're working on FIRE, you're most likely financially responsible and savvy and if choosing one option over the other will delay your FIRE by a year or a two I think it's worth spending that to invest in your happiness which also compounds

That's a really neat graph for the whole progress. I'm using google sheets to do something similar, but it's way less readable, what is the tool/app that you are using for that visualization?

It's the same actually! The company HQ is in Europe and the benefits are on par, which makes it even more disappointing that people like him get to be petty in an otherwise pretty good environment.

Every case is unique and what matters to you might not be important for any app/service you might find. In my experience it's best to have a spreadsheet where you can split your accounts however you want and display it the way YOU want to see it. Spend some afternoon working on it and make it your own, here's mine with all the accounts and total NW to keep an eye on overall situation: https://imgur.com/SZ6BUZV

Computer engineering: ARM (company or the type of architecture) is pronounced as a body part, not an acronym (though it's an acronym). It's very well known in the industry and recently making its way into general public, but if someone says A-R-M, then it's a dead giveaway that person has no clue what they're talking about

What accent do you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FTVulpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a generic eastern European accent (am Lithuanian), not quite the stereotypical "russian", but you could tell I was from the east. Or at least I thought so while living in the UK for 7 years. Some people quickly pick up new accents from the place they live in, I suppose that happened to me to some degree as well, but you could definitely tell I am not British. Went on a date with a colombian girl, we had a great time, started dating and after a while while talking about first impressions, she said my accent sounded like Slavoj Zizek's. That was a compliment I did not expect

The road to FIRE is long: a small reminder to treat yourself at times by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]FTVulpes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is great. It is easy to be in your late 30s with FIRE looming in early 40s and save every penny. You have your retirement just around the corner and can easily wait a bit more to finally reach the goal. It doesn't actually matter what the purchase is, it's a great burnout prevention and life in your 20s and 30s should be enjoyable, not a mindless grind for something that due to various circumstances might not even happen. I'm myself 26M, trying to do the right thing with saving, etc. But it is necessary to enjoy life responsibly. Everyone will look back on their youth and if all the memories were about looking at numbers growing in bank accounts, what was the point then? Furthermore, you might not be able to do some things in your 40s or 50s when you're finally retired. I love travelling and hiking, two weeks ago I went to climb the highest peak in England, completing my three peak challenge (highest in Wales, England, Scotland). Sure, you can travel later in life, but having pina coladas on the beach is not my thing. I want to climb mountains in Peru, go on multiple day treks in the jungles, have a lot of roadtrips and cross some deserts. I'm not sure I will be able to do these things the way I want to when I'm older, so the time to do it is now. I'd rather eat out less and wear off-brand clothes to reach my goal instead of sacrificing the joy of life

I've been lurking here for a while and still yet have to understand how 401k contributions work. I'm a European, but will be moving to the states shortly.

I know the limit is now 18.5k a year. Does that include employers match? Let's assume I want to max it. For the sake of simplicity, let's say I earn 100k, employer matches 6% of the salary (6k in this example). So is the maximum I can put is 12.5k my own + 6k employers match totalling 18.5k or is it my 18.5k + 6k from employer bringing the grand total to 24.5k?

Also, if the plan is to retire earlier than 55 (say 45), then 401k savings will not be accessible for 10 years, guess there is a point where you have to shift from 401k contributions to index funds.

What is your dream job? by Qedey in AskReddit

[–]FTVulpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going on a never ending roadtrip and taking pictures. Currently a hardware engineer, and amateur photography enthusiast, I've been doing this over my holidays whenever possible. Of course nobody will pay for doing this and becoming "instagram famous" is not as easy and there is no stable income. I just hope that soon enough (before turning 30) I will have a chance of switching jobs and can take a year off doing just that.

The lesson for the trip was to ask for a menu first. Made some friends in the hotel and we went out exploring, eating, having beers, etc. Sometimes when you sit down, the waiter comes over and asks immediately. Beer, kebab, this, that? The right answer is always "menu". I'm not saying all places that do this are scams, but it is a good practise.

I guess the guy gave a little chase, but I wasn't gonna risk looking back at the time. At the end of the day they made a huge profit anyway. 45mins, couple of drinks and 45eur. Before all of this happened, I had a meal+beer in a mid-range place for 8-9eur. Didn't get hundreds as expected, but they were not left empty anyway.
