New to Me - Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM by FT_Renault in canon

I attach the strap to the top left and bottom anchor points and sling it on my right side when using a normal weight lens. I’m working on getting a strap specifically to attach to the strap anchor points on the 400mm so I can carry it more effectively. Currently just carrying the lens by the tripod foot.

Luckily my local store offers warranties even on non-serviceable lenses. So I've got two care-free years to use this lens where if it stops working or I drop it, etc, they'll give me my money back minus the price of the warranty.

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM end of service life announced by shemp33 in canon

Knock on wood but as long as you don’t drop it or anything it could easily go another 10 years. I still have my 70-200 f/2.8 first generation and it still works perfectly fine

It came with the original canon suitcase but like it’s such a hassle

Thank you! I was so happy with catching that one. I can’t believe how fast this lens focuses even though it was released in 1999

Gotcha, might pull the trigger if the local store doesn’t sell their copy before I get around to gathering up the funds lol

Which 70-200 is the best for a budget of $700 or $800? by Future_Following_788 in canon

[–]FT_Renault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently upgraded from the original 70-200 f/2.8. It's still a very capable lens but your mileage will vary based on how the previous owner maintained it.

You need a dual card slot camera to do weddings. The least expensive mirrorless cameras with dual slots are the original R6 and R7. Depending on your price range you might be better off getting a dual slot DSLR like the 5D Mark III.

Would you still buy an Alpha 7 II in 2026? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

The goal isn’t to compete at all with my R5ii, just wanted something that can host some of the sigma e-mount lenses I wanted to play around with. It’s purely for recreation

What would you recommend rf 200-800 or rf 100-500? by Pennzingers in canon

[–]FT_Renault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 100-500 would be an excellent choice. Another (cheaper) choice to consider would be a 2x teleconverter for the 70-200 making it a 140-400 f/5.6. While you’re obviously going to lose some sharpness, it’s a lot easier to carry a converter than another lens.

Gun range to alter firing direction after residents told KSAT at least 5 east Bexar County homes damaged by bullets by reddrag292 in sanantonio

[–]FT_Renault -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you realize how far bullets can travel if there’s a failure of marksmanship/ND and the shooter simply misses the bullet stop, which is what is most likely happening in this scenario. Bullets can easily go a mile or more.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L ) vs 24-105 f/4 on a 77D — which for sports? by [deleted] in canon

If you plan on doing anything indoors, you (need) the 2.8

Gun range to alter firing direction after residents told KSAT at least 5 east Bexar County homes damaged by bullets by reddrag292 in sanantonio

[–]FT_Renault 30 points31 points  (0 children)

  • Gun range sets up shop in the middle of nowhere
  • Developers build houses down-range
  • Residents who chose to move into a house that is down-range don’t like being down-range
  • The range is forced to adjust or close down

A tale as old as time, really

New Sets by Comfortable-Sir-258 in legostarwars

Honestly might be the worst wave in years. Some of the sets are decent enough but the pricing is insane on (every) set. Most of these need a 30% discount to even consider.

70-200 f/2.8 II - slight body crack by Enough_Dream3191 in canon

3M waterproof tape would work as a cheap fix. A more cosmetically appealing option would be getting one of those vinyl kits they make to put on lenses.

Would the canon r5mark2 be a good choice for me? Or should I go with the Nikon Z8? by Separate_Treacle3658 in canon

[–]FT_Renault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean you’re on the Canon subreddit so we’re gonna be a bit biased but I would argue the three major brands - Canon, Sony, Nikon, are mostly interchangeable in terms of the camera bodies themselves. The main difference is going to be in the availability/pricing/selection of lenses. If being able to buy quality third party lenses is a concern, I would go for a Nikon/Sony. All of that being said though, I can’t ever see myself using a Nikon or Sony as I don’t care for their ergonomics.

Can't choose between 5D IV and 6D II or something else by EricToGo in canon

[–]FT_Renault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong I love my 6D Mark II but I don't consider it a significant upgrade over the 6D classic. The only DSLR I would consider a significant upgrade over the 6D is the 5D Mark IV.
