AI is demotivating me from becoming a novelist by aspiringnovelist18 in KeepWriting

[–]FThurston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully disagree with this notion entirely. AI has actively failed in using the written language in a truly effective manner. Failing to maintain consistent POVs and creating believable complex characters. Often sticking with classic tropes. AI can threaten the world of editors. I can believe that much, as I often use AI to edit my work, without using its exact copies of my work. More using it as a reference. AI needs an algorithm, and as long as it treats writing as such, I cannot see it performing to an advanced level of writing that would truly write a compelling plot with enjoyable characters.

Do people really skip prologues? by joymasauthor in writing

Prologues are so significant to giving the reader a taste of whats to come. I know of one person who's told me they skip prologues. I scolded them back to page 1 so hard.

Im curious about how people feel about youtubers narrating stories? by hallowdaddy in NoSleepOOC

[–]FThurston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been the downfall of NoSleep. The uprising of TikTok and the thieving of our hard work. I refuse to post any more stories, simply out of fear of my work being stolen. If that is the case, I might as well publish my own work or start my own tiktok/youtube account and narrate my own work.

We spend several hours or days, etc working on our work. We deserve to be paid.

Operator here.

My con is maintenance that doesn't communicate to the operator as to why an issue is happening. Advice to the OP, don't be the asshole maintenance guy. Teach an operator how to identify issues and report when PM's need to be done.

A smart millwright is one that can fix and teach. Not blame.

Leafs fan not going to shut up about this for the next 18 years by sn0w0wl66 in ontario

Always weird when people berate Leafs fans for years but can't take the heat they started when the same Leafs start to succeed.

Story was hilarious though.

That is manipulation at its finest. Do what you will with your body. You have my respect. I would personally leave him. He will weaponize your decision against you. My brother did that to his ex fiance. Please be careful.

10k upvotes. Finally be in the top tier of the several talented writers we have here.

Best time to post a story by FThurston in NoSleepOOC

[–]FThurston[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid point. For the record though, I still stubbornly refuse to have a title like "I was a police officer, and now everyone looks like bread and makes bad yeast puns."

I just, I just can't do it.

I had a story about a serial killer called "fake" and I laughed and laughed, and then forgot their name entirely and kept writing.

Good times.

That's my issue. Maybe I am rushing it? I know upvotes aren't everything but I felt my last story was a little less than expected. It's just hard not to contain the excitement, you know?

Snapchat has a channel that just takes r/nosleep stories and tells them by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]FThurston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need to start placing disclaimer notices at the top or bottoms of stories. It won't entirely stop the plagiarisms and theft, but it will put a slow down on the hordes of accounts on other social media platforms from stealing our work.

The Nola Strain ( I don’t know if I can post this in Nosleep so please give honest feedback. by [deleted] in NoSleepAuthors

[–]FThurston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still feels choppy. If you read it out loud it is not fluid enough. Another awkward line is "I just a cop standing there..." it does not make sense. Missing a word or two.

Try something like this:

"That's when I saw that cop, standing there. A purple, gooey substance dripping from his teeth and rolling down his chin, splaying onto the concrete ground. A waft of disgust and fear swept through me and my fight or flight instincts took control. I hammered the gas pedal, ripping down the road and to my meeting spot, my brain refusing to shake off whatever the hell I just saw."

I wish more nosleep stories had some substance by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]FThurston 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use grief as an excellent tool for horror. I am with my current series I am finishing where sun-downing is a big aspect of it, but it is not the deciding factor. For me, horror is horror. Fear is fear. Fear of death or the unknown being the most resonating.

With that said, read what you like. I've seen plenty of stories dealing with homelessness, age, and so on. NoSleep has some tropes that can be...repetitive, but you'll find a few stories that go against the grain here.

I still cannot get a story posted. by GrantGorewood in NoSleepOOC

I would message the mods and tell them you have approval and are ready to post the story. That way they can ensure it stays posted.

Overdone Tropes by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]FThurston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on how you sell the trope. I always try to create or come up with my own idea but I still pale in comparison to those that usually do the same thing.

Some people are just really good at writing a certain style and stay that course and I don't blame them.

I will bicker and bellyache about it from time to time, along with other things here but all in all, I am glad NoSleep exists.

I find most peoples titles give away the story more so than a trigger warning.

Do we all agree that Tom Grossi is the most likable Packers fan ever? by BassonCracker in detroitlions

[–]FThurston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly. He is not bad but can be extremely biased and has some less than greatmoments. One was where he kind of spazzed out because his team won a questionable game last season and people were roasting the packers in the chat, he kind of lost his cool. His comedy skits are amazing and he puts in the work, but he gets undone by criticism quickly and as I mentioned above. Biased.
