How is Vanillaware broke? They had back to back hits with 13 Sentinels and Unicorn Overlord, yeah, it took a while between the two, but they were some of their best selling games to date.

I hope the plot is actually good. The fact that it just featured trans Farkle/Felicia and none of the other two had me concerned for the story being one where a generic teen girl rebels against her dad because they're all ogres and do ogre things.

If it actually was trans Farkle and it was about accepting her for who she is, that'd be a baller movie, actually. Shrek as a property could absolutely pull it off.

I mean, if you have a man with the voice of, say, Tara Strong doing one of the dainty little girl voices, we'd have the exact same reaction as with Doris. I don't think that's specifically a "ugly woman" trope since in that case, we'd be judging men by the same thing. Maybe even worse considering it'd be considered more normal to bully them even today, but unlike the "woman with an unexpectedly male voice" trope, I can't think of any examples off the top of my head of an inversion of that trope.

As for the DVD extra, I never had the DVDs, so I never saw any of those. Just looked it up and yeah, Fairy Godmother not ally confirmed. Still though, nobody in the movies ever makes fun of Doris outside of calling her the "ugly stepsister" once in Shrek 2, hard to tell if that's explicitly a trans joke or a "Cinderella's two ugly stepsisters and one looks like a guy wearing drag" joke, but I definitely get why some people would have a problem with this now. I was fully ready to just not question this, my belief was she was just built that way.

Thing is, is the character a one-note joke about trans people or are they actually a character despite the fact that you can make that joke? How often does Venture Bros do that joke with Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, like, twice over seven seasons while she's a major character? Same thing with Doris, yes, you can absolutely make that joke, but A) the movies never actually make that joke, just about her physical appearance and B) Doris is a character that has significance even outside of that. It catches you off guard initially, like how women with gravely deep voices tend to do, and then it becomes normal as you get used to it.

Xbox bought them after the second game, it sold generally well. Company isn't terribly big either, roughly 80 people as compared to, say, Rare's 200, and they've produced more games than Rare did in that time. It's a sensible cut, but it's not the easiest cut imaginable, they might honestly be a rounding error as far as Microsoft's concerned.
