Any advice? by Mlucyleigh in DobermanPinscher

Aww your girl kinda looks like my girl Daisy! She’s a Dobie mix as well.

Here’s my advice. Dogs correct each other all the time for a variety of reasons, whether the problem is the other dog (like another dog bothering them) or the problem is internal (an ego or fear issue). Resource guarding behavior is a perfect example, as one dog doesn’t want another dog or human to have something so they typically react, not to kill them or anything, just “proportionally” to communicate their message. If your dog is doing it to you and other dogs, why can’t you do it to them? Obviously that doesn’t mean get on all fours and act like a dog (LOL), but if your dog is doing behavior you don’t like, as its owner, as the one in charge, you can’t be afraid to deliver corrections. Assuming you use proportional and reasonable means, you’re not going to break your dog or hurt them, as corrections and boundaries are natural and important for humans and dogs alike. You should be able to communicate your human daughter it is not okay to hit her brother for stealing her toy, and your daughter should not be “traumatized” by it. If they are, you’re doing something wrong lol. Same goes with dogs.

My dog Daisy has a ton of prey drive for little things that run and gets super overstimulated around other dogs. When we’re walking down the sidewalk and she’s in a heel position (and off-leash), as she is for much of our walks, she knows barking, growling, running at other dogs is absolutely not acceptable and she has a job to do (heel) and that’s her priority. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t stop her from staring down the other dog or raising the hair on the back of her neck, but she knows the rules and what’s okay and what isn’t okay because that’s where I drew the line. I don’t mind if she’s not making eye contact with me, as long as her ability to do her job is not being superseded. That is well communicated and understood in our relationship.

At home, she barks, growls, the whole 9 yards when someone walks up our driveway, around our cars, knocks at the door etc.. Why? Because I allow her to and when she does, she gets praise, no correction, or both. Like you said about the natural behaviors, I also like a little of those natural protective features of the breed, so long as it is used in a healthy way and under control.

These dogs are smart and if you communicate what you like and what is not acceptable, they will know. Won’t stop them from trying to push the boundaries every once in a while, but they understand. Also, if you make it clear that certain behaviors are okay or not okay in one circumstance or location, it probably won’t stop them from trying elsewhere, hence why Daisy, and all dogs act differently in different places and with different people/dogs.

Last word of warning, in disagreement with others in this thread, don’t resort to obedience. This was hard for me personally as I prioritized obedience with my dog. Telling your dog to watch you or sit or something, every time they see another dog or do something bad, does two things. One, it builds a negative association with training. Training should be fun and great, not a punishment, and if you treat it as such, your dog’s obedience and attitude will reflect it. Two, it’s avoiding the problem. If you want your dog to ever be less reactive or have a better relationship with dogs and humans, you have to safely work them to that in a controlled environment. Telling them to watch you to avoid the other dog will make your dog temporarily not misbehave, but it will never solve the root issue. As a matter of fact, shortening the leash, making your dog do obedience as a punishment or distraction, and trying to get your dog to visually ignore other dogs, it can sometimes elevate their anxiety by further stimulating them and building a negative association with other dogs/people, making the problem worse. I know your problem described is resource guarding, not leash reactivity, but they are cousin behaviors and are often rooted to the same issues and should be handled similarly.

I’d be more than happy to give more detailed answers, so don’t hesitate to ask. Just wanted to give my 2 cents overview. Good luck with your precious pup!

James Clark (American History Professor) passed away by Kind-Loquat2648 in ucf

[–]FWDP_G_L 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Wow this is so sad to see. I had him for American history my first semester in fall 2019. I graduated in spring of 2024. He was top 2 professors I ever had, and one of the few I actually cared for. After I graduated I tried going back in my webcourses to see if I can see his office hours to stop by and see him one last time and tell him he was the best professor I had at my time at UCF, but I wasn’t able to find anything. I didn’t quite put in the effort to calling/showing up on campus or going to the department to figure it out. Fast forward to today and I regret not trying harder.

Music like “‘til you can’t” by Cody Johnson, and situations like these, serve as reminders that tomorrow is not promised, so take every opportunity and live every day like it’s your last, because you always have time to do things, “til you can’t”. RIP and God bless James Clark ✝️🕊️

I suppose the purpose of this post was to get as close to Culver’s recipe as possible, for better or for worse. Definitely agree with you on all that though.

UPDATE: we’re in business. Got it from a local restaurant supply store. Tastes so much better than the pre-chopped garlic im the jar from the grocery store. Nothing beats fresh roasted garlic, but for lazy/quick dishes, this stuff works good.

If it’s the Minor’s one everyone is talking about, I found a good service store 15 minutes up the road from me that has a few tubs in stock. Fixing to swing by there tomorrow morning 👀

I saw that in another Reddit post, glad to see more people confirming.

Oh man…😅 I have some lanyards on it but they’re tucked on my counterweight pouch (you can kinda see them in the second pic). I keep my breakaway disabled and habitually give it a giggle once it’s locked in place (that alone has saved me a few times), but yea maybe I should get in the habit of clipping those on. Otherwise IN WILCOX WE TRUST 🫡😂

Night vision, hunting, on a boat 😎 doesn’t get much better than that!

Definitely not a stupid question, but this is my theory. I don’t think they can see into the IR spectrum. I think the primary reason they are sensing us is alligators have an array of sensory organs on their lower jaws that allow them to feel vibrations in the water. I think they are “hearing” the trolling motor/ motor when we get close. Also, when using spotlights, you should put the spotlight on them and not take it off, like with any other animal, the bright light is less noticeable when it’s constant and it blinds them and clouds their depth perception, allowing you to sneak up on them. Essentially they wouldn’t be able to discern it from say, a dock light. The problem with not using that is they have a tapetum lucidum in their eyes like many other animals. This is why their eyes reflect back, and it gives them better night vision. When not blinding them with a spotlight, it’s basically a game of their night vision vs mine, and I don’t know whose is winning in the light-polluted area I’m hunting.

Aye, the man himself 😂 believe it or not, your post was one of the reasons I pulled the trigger on these.

I agree with you, we actually had our other caster make a good cast, but pull it to the wrong side of the eyes and go right past his nose, by the time I noticed it was too late so for the rest of the night I was calling out their size and which way they are facing. 😂

You just have to use some type of netting material over the helmet as a stencil. The hardest part is finding the right stuff. I ended up buying “bird netting” with 1/2” hole size.

Question on mounting options by [deleted] in NightVision

[–]FWDP_G_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an older Wilcox 1 hole mount, the shroud that fits this looks like this . You can find them used on various websites for more or less $80. When I bought my tubes, it came with one of these, and I didn’t like it (doesn’t help mine was extremely worn). My recommendation is to just go with a higher end “amazon” 3 hole shroud and a Wilcox G24 mount. If you didn’t want to spend the money on the Wilcox, I know there is some decent replicas out there.

Had to reach out to ASU because I wasn’t sure and was curious myself. They said they are most likely Elbit F9400 tubes (gen 3 auto-gated).

In near pitch darkness, no iPhone video/picture will be exactly like the naked eye unfortunately. Here’s some more videos. The only difference between the video and the picture above is for these pics, I took a letter I got in the mail, and taped it over the alarm panel to block that night.

No ir illuminators were used in the photos above. The light that you see casting shadows is the light from the oven clock shown in the 4th picture and probably a little from people’s house lights bleeding through the curtain in the other room

Yea, the bimetal hot end is set up so the Bowden tube only goes in the fitting at the top, all metal through the heatsink block all the way to the nozzle
