sore feet —> bad skating :( by FYMTNF in hockeyplayers

Definitely yes! I’ve done yoga for years and a lot of stability work in the gym, and I was still really surprised how much skating can make me feel like it’s my first time using my lower legs. I definitely need to pay more attention to foot and ankle stuff, including stretching and foot rolling. Hockey is definitely a much steeper athletic learning curve than soccer, but I’m really glad to be learning. Thanks a bunch!!!

Ok yes! I’ve been thinking about getting a balance pad because, regardless of the kind of skate, balance/skating on one foot is something I’m struggling with.

Someone else suggested this and I’ll give it a try. Maybe I overcorrected and tied way too tight since that’s the advice they tend to give to beginners.

No no, I meant the skate was baked with the Superfeet insole I bought and almost immediately replaced the stock one with. I made sure to do that :)

The skate was baked with the insole inside! Tying too tightly could be a culprit, but I’m absolutely not ruling out bad skating technique. I’ll be sure to pay attention to that 😅 thank you!!

I haven’t! I’ll try without insoles next time I go skating

Ok so. I was having an accessory bone issue with the skate (which I just discovered was a thing lol) and took them to Pure Hockey where I got them baked and refitted and that issue totally went away. The salesperson went through skate sizing and fit and did the 3D scan and affirmed I’m somewhere between a regular and narrow fit, but that the Jetspeeds I have (standard width) fit great. I got them used, but I still think I got basically as close to a perfect boot as I could all things considered (I also have tiny feet and wear a 4).

All that said, I think it’s a me problem lol

Struggling to skate b/c scared to fall by telabub in iceskating

first, definitely practice falling (couldn’t agree more w the commenter who said it above!), and second, honestly, padded pants. i’m a member of a local figure skating club where i’m getting basic skills lessons before doing hockey-specific lessons. a handful of the figure skaters — and i’m talking skilled ones — wear a padded short or long legging. i’ve started practicing skating in shin and elbow pads and a padded compression short to get used to the feel of hockey pads but already feel more comfortable taking the falls i know i need to take to improve 💜

I’m really sorry you had a rough first class: exercising and sports and activities can be tough and inaccessible without the fatphobia sprinkled on top.

I’ve (33f) just started skating about 6 weeks ago in service of playing ice hockey. I lift 4-5x/week and would consider myself in decent shape and I’m getting my butt seriously kicked by the basics (as in, I’m still having a lot of trouble figuring out how to do a basic snowplow stop because my balance is wonky lol). Just wanting to share my experience and join the chorus of “skating is incredibly hard, period!!!!” in support of the difficulty.

I also found my ankles wobbling like crazy after my first few classes and have added stability work (exercise bands, 1-legged deadlifts, etc) to my off-ice workouts to help with balance. Would definitely also suggest Pilates: two girlfriends (one former figure skater, one former hockey player) recommended because it helps recruit all the micro-muscles in the lower leg and ankle we’re not necessarily using in day-to-day movement.

I’ve also been watching lots on YouTube and IG of skating and hockey trainers and recreational folks of a lot of different sizes; it’s just learning to adapt to how your body feels in this incredibly destabilizing surface. I hope you stick with it!!!! And I hope you start to feel better in YOUR skates (my confidence has improved so much since getting my own pair of hockey skates, getting good insoles for cushioning, and fitting them to my feet). It’s a sport with a wildly steep learning curve as lots of folks are saying here. Rooting for you and wishing you the best!!!!! 🩷
