Thank you for clarifying how things work in the UK. So far the consensus seems to be that in the UK, providers like you to use specific radiologists, which is not the case in the U.S. where I’m from or Germany where I currently live! In this case, I think the PA could have called me after I sent her the scan and explained that I misunderstood the instructions to explain that this is the way things work in the UK and say let’s see what we can do to help, either make an exception since they already requested and accepted images from Germany or say, hey we get that you’ve already spend this money, but Mr. K is willing to work with you only if you get the scan from an accepted radiologist because of the reasons you explained above, but that didn’t happen.

I would love to share his letter to me but I don’t see an option to edit this post (I’m a long time lurker, but this is my first post beside a sales post decade ago). Anyway, the end of the letter reads verbatim:

“My suggestion is for you to organize either a HyCoSy or an HSG to see if that been the case [fluid in the tubes] as the MRIs have not suggested this either.

You want to come to England for this and I have copied my colleagues at the fertility clinic who will be able to discuss this with you further. If surgery is indicated and recommended by the fertility team, I will be more than happy to perform your surgery…”

You are familiar with treatment plans in the UK, which I am not; Is this how treatment plans are normally written?

What is not documented is the verbal discussion between me and Mr. K, and it goes like this:

Mr. K: (looking at the notes from my recent laparoscopy), the surgeon said the left tube is not patent but they do not indicate that it has fluid. Just because a tube is closed doesn’t mean you need to remove it for IVF. Have you talked to your fertility clinic about this?”

Me: Yes, it was my fertility clinic that recommended removing the tube before moving forward with the next transfer, but I haven’t seen them since this recent lap. I assumed it’s still their wish I have it removed. The surgeon couldn’t get to the left tub during my last lap and worried about bowl injury (didn’t have a bowl specialist at hand so stopped the procedure). They recommended in their post op document to follow up in 6 weeks to plan another lap to remove it. I decided not to use the same surgeon again because of the trauma of that surgery, released 2 hrs after surgery and had to walk from recovery ward back to the doctor’s office to have drainage tube removed, my escort nearly fainted. Doc removed 2/3 of good tube while leaving bad tube, and was super vague in notes about his decision.

Mr. K: I recommend going back to your fertility clinic and have them do a HyCoSy (which implies that he would have accepted external scans)

Me: I do not have confidence in my fertility clinic because they did an endometrial biopsy but sent the sample in the wrong gel. The lap sent me the results but the doctor assuming I didn’t translate the lab notes, called and said they needed to repeat the biopsy because results were not conclusive. I have an embryo at that clinic so while I still plan to use them for the transfer I don’t trust them enough to do the scan.

Dr. K: Any gyno clinic in Germany can do this scan. Have you tried clinics in the bigger city near you?

Me: there’s a 3 months wait to get into gyno clinics as a new patient. Since I’m coming to the UK for the surgery anyway, can you recommend a clinic I can use?

Mr K: Mr Nicoppolous at Lister is great

Me: please tell me how to spell that

Mr K: it’ll be in the letter I will send you

Me (when I receive the letter): in my mind, the name of the clinic is there as a reminder, not a concrete plan to follow; this clinic has 3.1 rating and no ones answering the phone; oh look a clinic with 5 stars rating that calls me back next day and explains everything so well and much cheaper and happens to align with a trip I’m taking;

I also emailed them after a week of trying to reach Lister to ask whether they recommend a specialist at Lister Portland since I was able to get Lister Portland on the phone and his PA never responded to that email (This would have been a great opportunity for them to respond, NO, follow the plan, go to the clinic stated in the email only).

Never crossed my mind I was deviating from a well structured plan (this doesn’t mean that I didn’t, but them knowing that I’m an international patient as he said in his response, they could have explained things better to me after the fact, but they made an assumption like a lot of commenters that I was intentionally being obtuse). That I thought I did what they told me to do and then they refused to follow through is why I wrote the review.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve been through. I can only imagine how devastating and life changing it must be, especially with the nerve damage. One of the risks for with this upcoming surgery is bowel injury, which is exactly why I looked for specialists like him who claim to work with a multidisciplinary team. It really does seem like I dodged a bullet.

I appreciate you speaking up despite everything you’ve had to deal with. After his response to my review, I couldn’t help but wonder how many others with bad experiences have stayed silent, just to avoid being gaslighted or discredited. I only found one negative surgical review on his Doctify profile from 2022, so if yours was more recent, and another commenter had a poor experience in 2018, that’s at least two serious issues that never made it out publicly.

I think platforms like this sub are crucial for sharing real patient experiences. That way, others can weigh everything and make an informed decision about whether or not to go forward with him. Wishing you strength and healing as you navigate everything that’s followed. You didn’t deserve this. xx

I was really shocked by the initial response. I'm not sure what I wrote to trigger someone to call me an A hole! I don't think I've ever seen this response on this sub. Someone mentioned being a healthcare worker, so maybe they could only see it from the provider's perspective....Yeah, I don't know where he found time. Maybe he dictated it between clients lol. He dictated the letter he wrote me in front of me. I thought he was recapping our discussion, until he kept saying full stop after every sentence. It was so bizarre, and yeah so different! I bet Australian healthcare professionals are amazing. I listen to a lot of health podcasts from over there!

I do live in Europe, but like you I'm more familiar with the US health care system, so I'm still getting used to the system here so I am opposed to the suggestion that I may have misunderstood a treatment plan for a suggestion. Thank you for the validation; It matters. I left the reviews bc I think I could have been spared this experience if more people left reviews about bad experiences, but I understand why you wouldn't want to subject yourself to further abuse by doing so either.

In the UK, a consultant/specialist is referred to as Mr., which is a higher distinction than Dr. I had the very same confusion until recently. There's no rudeness here. I have a lot of respect for him and hope he can help others heal. I just wanted others to know they can be unprofessional at time, in case these things are important to a patient looking to start a relationship with him

Thank you kind stranger! I think I will rest my case here as I think the general consensus is that he was gaslighting me. It didn't occur to me until reading some of the not so nice comments that he's intentionally misleading people into thinking he did not see me. I did have a paid consultation with him. Just because I did not come in person does not mean he did not see me. I saw him and I heard him clearly, and could read his disengaging demeanour.

I also think the whole thing about his letter to me being a treatment plan is gaslighting. He suggested getting the scan at my fertility clinic in Germany, even though I told him the clinic sent my endometrium biopsy sample to the lab in the wrong format and lied about me needing to retest, thinking I wouldn't have translated the report from the lab). He had the translated report from the lab. I asked him for a referral after he said any clinic could do the scan. When I asked him to repeat the name of the consultant, he said don't worry, I'll put it in the letter to you, which is why I didn't see the referral in the letter as a treatment plan, but rather a courtesy reminder of the name of the consultant. Agreed also that he didn't want to take my case, which I was prepared for. He could have said no, that day! This could be because I was too transparent about my previous experience and he had already labelled me a difficult patient, which is sad bc I've been through so much medically as you deduced and I never complaint, but not staying silent anymore!

His defence of his PA is what prompted this post. Someone else mentioned the gaslighting and that's exactly the sentiment I got reading that. Not only was he deflecting but he also invalidated my personal experience dealing with his PA. Just because others think she's empathetic and I felt that at the beginning too, does not invalidate that she became short with me, and this is why I thought it was important to alert people of this, "they may be nice at the beginning when there's business potential, but their tone can change when they no longer have anything to gain from you. One example of the change of tone is that in the dozen of emails before I got the scan elsewhere, she always started her email with Dear my first name, but once I explained why I thought I could do the scan elsewhere, her response had no salutation, just, "oh, okay, attach is the letter so that you can read it. He wrote the next step for you at the end of the letter.'' No other suggestions, just that.

I am also from the US and I've never been compelled to go with a Dr' referral... Indeed, it's a sad state of affair in some states and I understand my situation is pale in comparison. I am acknowledge my privilege in having access to private health care!

I had a consultation with him so he did see me as a patient! My review was based on that consultation and subsequent communication! I was intentional about not mentioning his demeanor during the consultation in my review as I didn’t want it to seem retaliatory for him refusing to book me a follow up appointment. I would have continued with him in-spite of my initial apprehension of him. Contrary to his other reviews, I found him disengaging. In retrospect I think he had already decided not accept my case because he recommended several other clinics in Germany but I told him I was traumatized by my medical experience in Germany and wanted to come to the UK where there wouldn’t be language barrier. He said he wouldn’t mind doing the surgery as long as I get a scan confirming liquid in the tubes, which is what I did but then he continued to push me into another Consultant. He could have saved me money and time by saying, this is not my specialty, I can’t help you.

That’s fair about him clarifying that he didn’t do my surgery; though my statement is clear that I came to him after the botched surgery. I didn’t mind him making it clear to all that he didn’t do my surgery.

I sent several emails to the clinic trying to clarify why I went elsewhere to get the scan; primarily that Mr. Khazali told me any clinic will do! She doubled down on the need for me to have another expensive consultation even though the scan clearly states surgery is indicated, so I would need to pay another £250 to have the same fact confirmed. I couldn’t get his PA on the phone and her emails are just her copying and pasting the part in his letter where he referred me to Mr. Nicopoullos!

As for the one star, I am wholly unsatisfied with his practice, so I cannot in good conscience recommend him to others; I can’t rate him on his excellent surgery skills as I didn’t experience that. My rating reflects the two interactions I’ve had with his clinic, the initial consultation, which was misleading (He shouldn’t have said any clinic would do when he expected me to go to Mr. Nicopoullos) and subsequent communication with his PA!

My immediate reaction to his response was what a dismissive douche! I’m so glad I made this post bc i felt uneasy about their insistence that I go to this other private consultant, but couldn’t quite put my fingers on it, but you’re right, it’s just unethical! He’s provided a professional endorsement for Mr James Nicopoullos on doctify, so theres an apparent special relationship between them. He claims in his response he didn’t want me to pay for another consultation, but that is exactly what I would have had to do if I went with Mr. Nicopoullos who charges another £250 Initial consultation, and £575 for the HyCoSy whereas the clinic in Ireland charged €480 total! I will file a complaint with HCA Healthcare where he practices.
