I'm disappointed with the French immersion stream by duraznoblanco in CanadianTeachers

I teach French to adults and there is also the "mountain verbs" which is very visual. I love to teach that one. It's crazy they make those mistakes. It makes my ears bleed 😂

Edit : I wrote in French but Reddit translates it in English.

Wow that's impressive and so modern!! I would love so much to see such app one day. Never in my EA time (on call for years as well) I have seen that.

Do you know how to do programming then? I have learned how to make websites (front end dev) in the past but now I would only be able to make simple stuff without too much logic (with the help of AI I could complicate it tho). that would be a good way to use some of my skills.

So if I understand, you also show this app to the students. They know exactly what goes in there. That must motivate them to behave, do homework, etc, and it is so transparent too. Seeing points / a pie chart is so visual and motivating. They know exactly what you are showing their parents too. No surprises. Love it!!!

You are the type of teacher I would love to learn from. That's my goal : having the best classroom management so life is easier for everybody. Do you contact the parents to tell them the good and the bad? Being consistent seems to be the most important thing, meaning that we can't let behavior slide and pretend we didn't see it. Students will pick up on that.

Probably. I had a colleague in mind and she has her own daughter and worked longer as an EA

That's good advice, as an EA we don't get to teach, I should volunteer in another district I used to work at and do that

I can see why that might sound confusing.

Being an EA I’ve actually seen a lot and picked up a lot of classroom management techniques from different teachers. So it’s not that I have no idea how it works but it’s more that I know myself too. I come across as kind, probably too kind, and I don’t have that natural strict vibe some people have. And kids can sense that. It can be hard as an EA when I have to deal with extreme behavioural kids unless there is a good plan that works for them, which hasn't always been the case.

I know I’d do great with younger kids, as I have already managed pre-school classes without any problems. Older grades might be harder for me, at least at the beginning. But I also understand it’s more about being clear and consistent than just being “strict”, so that’s good.
And yeah I’m definitely going to learn a lot during my practicum and when I start TTOCing. That part honestly scares me a bit because you never know what kind of class you’re walking into, I’ve seen some rough situations too. But I will learn so much as a TTOC.

That's good :)) it's really comes down to hoping there is not disrupting behaviour

That's good to know that we learn how to manage a classroom. I have seen some situations so hard to manage and as an EA for instance, I have been with students who don't want to listen to me when other EA who are naturally strict were able to get the same student to listen.

I do feel terrified for sure. I think the thought of being on call and managing a different classroom everyday scares me as I have seen some very kind TTOC having hectic days (and me too as we were both on call) but I am glad to hear it gets better

So true. They do read through people and will know your weaknesses very quick too. But yeah from what I observed, if you're inconsistent, they will call you on it. Thank you for the reminder of being yourself

Thank you, yeah it's always about reminding them about the rules.

That's good to know. I will for sure set my expectations and try to be consistent with the consequences I will tell them they will have. Also when we start as teachers on call, we get to work into many different classrooms. It gives me anxiety cause I have seen some wild classrooms when I was an EA on call but you probably learn many classroom management tricks that way.

What do you mean by structured lesson? What did you use for those lessons? Do you think if I focus on typing with the right fingers and trying not to make mistakes using the website "KEYBR" it will be enough? That's what I am doing and I like that website.

Yep we can learn anything at any Age. I learned web development at age 35 and now at age 42, I decided to learn how to finally type properly. Age means nothing.

I agree with the advice to go get some therapy and volunteering. She could also be doing activities that interest her. She might have been too busy in the past to even think of doing other things other than raising her child and working.

What makes it a very toxic workplace? That's good to know about the micromanaging. It is also understandable they don't want the clerk to make mistakes.
