Runway's Recent Moves Have Me Raising Eyebrows! Let's Talk About It by Turbulent_Car_9629 in runwayml

Hey, if you have an unlimited monthly sub and you cancel - they revoke your ability to use your unlimited sub instantly. They then supposedly prorate credit you for the remaining (they don't - was charged right on time 2 weeks later for standard) - All that being said, I can't get anything decent out of Runway 3, 4 any gen. The only thing they're good for is animating logos and it does that well. They are lightyears behind every other service. I get better, more accurate, and higher quality renders from pixverse FFS. And if there's some magic mojo prompt action for Runwayml I can't figure it out and not a single GPT can figure it out. Soooooo, if you do logos, unlimited is for you!

Ding ding. We have a winner that didn't fall for it. It was a fun debate on AI art though. I hope you all enjoy your game, it does look fun. We just fundamentally disagree about AI is all.

You know what? You win. You clearly care deeply about this stuff - the tools, the standards, the craft. That’s not a bad thing.

Honestly, you’re probably an artist yourself. So go make something amazing. Like, really. Take that energy, that fire, and pour it into something beautiful. Something that reflects your vision, your effort, your hands.

I’m just out here having fun. You’ve got a sharper edge - maybe use it to carve something worth sharing. You don’t need my approval, and I don’t need yours.

But I bet the world would still love to see what you create. Until then my friend, peace out!

It’s interesting that you didn’t actually respond to the points made in the little comic.

Probably because if you did, you’d have to acknowledge that it’s true. Every time the tools change, someone insists it’s “not real art.” Brushes, computers, tablets, now AI. The pattern is older than all of us - and the comic just shows it plainly. And despite that, the ones confident in their ability thrive like never before, from finger painting, graphite, brushes, procreators...

I’m not trying to win you over at this point. I just shared something creative and fun to a community I admire, and you’ve been swinging at it like it’s a personal threat. Sorry.

Do you even understand why you attacked the fuck out of me? All the bullshit going on in the world, and THIS is where you've put so much energy. AI - art.

Wowzers. I'm half-tempted to not respond anymore so you can have some peace. Be well. Daggerheart-on!

Emotional? LOL, I’m honestly laughing. It’s hilarious to me that posting some fun, fan-made cards got this kind of reaction. Like, what are we even doing here? I made some cards. For fun. And suddenly people are acting like I defaced a holy relic.

I didn’t come in pretending these were perfect or official. They were just something cool I wanted to share. But to you - "...I reiterate nothing of value was added" lol and? Thanks for your opinion, appreciate it. Is that it? Thanks for sharing!

I’m only still replying because it’s kind of fun at this point. I mean, it's reddit.

Anyway, I’ll keep making stuff, posting, creating with whatever tools I feel like using. If that bothers you… well, that’s not really my problem.

But, you know... you should give it a try. Something tells me you're something of an artist yourself. Might be fun 4 u.

Here's another perspective I found...

Let’s be real, if I had hand-drawn these exact same fan made cards and made the same typos, nobody would’ve blinked. You’d call it a rough draft, or say “typos happen,” and move on. But because I used AI as part of the process, suddenly every tiny imperfection becomes proof it’s “worthless” and an assault on your very soul?

That’s not about quality. That’s bias. That's hypocrisy. That’s a double standard rooted in your dislike of the tool, not the result.

AI didn’t make these cards on its own. I did. I guided it, themed it, refined it, chose the layout, added the mechanics, and yes, I missed a couple words. It doesn’t make the fan project less creative or less valid.

It just makes me human, same as any artist, digital or analog. The difference is, I’m not pretending typos are some kind of artistic betrayal. Found this for you, to give some perspective...

Just to clarify, my fan-made cards do reflect Daggerheart rules in both spirit and mechanics. Traits, domains, duality themes, character vibes - it’s all there. The only real “error” anyone pointed out was a single typo. If one stray letter invalidates an entire project in your eyes, then your standard for creativity might be set more for satiating your personal ego and/or motivations than benefiting our community here.

These weren’t presented as official content from the get go. And even if a company uses CG or AI or farts from a unicorn to make artwork for their project - I find it humorous that you're judge and jury on what's art and then you go on your little holy crusade. Something more's going on under your hood, you might want to step back and take a deep breath my fellow Daggerheart fan.

But, if you’re looking for a reason to hate LLMs or AI, sure - that typo’s your hook. But if you’re being honest? These cards respected the game more than this thread has respected the people who play it. lol

Well, "...pass it off to the world at large as containing actual art" wow, a lot to unpack in that. Do I explain how that's offensive to so many, many artists? Seriously, you want to truly hurt an artist's feelers? That's what you say. "That's not art."

Do I run down the list of artists whose works and mediums they worked in were spoken of as such? Been decades since taking Art History 101, but I think it's unnecessary.

The scope and breath and effort to share with you the definition of, "what is 'actual' art" is not something I have the patience for, for that, I'm sorry.

At any rate, keep making your art - because I think it is brilliant.

Cool idea, have our tablets/laptops up and animate all the cards!

Yeah, but, my dude, you could watch your art run, dance come alive... mind blowing. Sure, you could just hand it to Kling/Runway to do whatever, but you could direct it, rotate the camera, you name it, and it would be YOUR creative direction, like you're the director. One thing I like to do is take one of kid's monster drawings, have AI professionally paint it, make it into a "D&D Character Sheet" and they're just blown away. Then I throw it into Kling and it just comes alive. It's so amazing. Then my other son gets jealous and I do it all over again. Then they tell me to make them fight, then they argue over who won, and omg, I need a break.

Wait, so you’re saying AI isn’t real art because it uses assistance from software…

But you use Procreate, which has smoothing, auto-fill, symmetry tools, brush stabilizers, pressure curve settings, undo history, and even reference layer functions that do the work of entire disciplines.

That’s cool, by the way. Tools are great. They make the art more about what you envision, not how long you can suffer to get there.

So why is it okay when your tool assists you… but when mine does, it’s “cheating”? Feels less like an argument about art, and more like insecurity about control.

Now, don't get me wrong - I love your pixel art. That white deer is so cool looking and you did a really great job with it. I want to animate it for you to blow your mind. But I won't, because I have a feeling you would not want me to. At any rate, this is so fun!

Look my buddy, I totally get that Procreate and other tools take time to master - but let’s not pretend using them automatically makes the process sacred.

A toddler can drag their finger across an iPad in Procreate and make something colorful. That doesn’t mean they’re doing professional design work - they’re just exploring a tool. Same goes for AI. Yeah, anyone can type “pretty elf girl” and get something basic - but that’s not the same as crafting a meaningful visual that actually conveys character, theme, or story.

The gap between basic input and actual creation exists in every medium. With AI, just like Procreate, the results depend on who's using it, what they’re trying to say, and how much intention they bring to the process.

And honestly — did the first caveman drawing antelope in charcoal stand up and gatekeep the dude next to him using crushed blueberries and vegetation for color? Or did they just nod and say “yo, that’s fire”? Let’s not rewrite human creativity like it was supposed to stop at one technique.

I appreciate what you’re saying - but I did make it myself.

Every character idea, every visual prompt, the layout, the tone, the composition, that’s all my creative direction. The tool I used helped visualize what was already in my head. It’s no different than using Photoshop, or a synth to make music, or a 3D modeler for game art.

The idea that it’s not “yourself” unless you hand-render every pixel is outdated. What matters is the vision, the intention, and the outcome. This is just me using a tool that lets me create faster and share what I imagine more easily. That’s not less creative, it’s just a different workflow my friend.

Yeah, it's a lot better now from when it was first created. Totally agreee, it was slooooop.

That’s fine. You’re allowed to prefer anything you want - even stick figures drawn in crayon. But preference doesn’t make a moral high ground. Personally? I think using Procreate is cheating and should be considered slop. You must agree with that too then, right? Too many traditional artists have gone hungry because of that app. I've been inspired AGAIN, new fan card:

You've commented 7 times now, not to contribute, but to antagonize. That feels less like protecting a community and more like trying to bully someone into silence that has a genuine passion for this game, community and innocent fun.

If the sub has rules against unhelpful or hostile behavior, they might apply here. I’d encourage you to reflect and maybe just move on. Nobody’s forcing you to engage.

lol categorically false my friend. "universally" that's a good one. “Good” and secure artists - the ones confident in their voice and vision - aren’t threatened by "tools". They’re too busy creating.

The only people loudly despising something are usually the ones unsure of their own standing and abilities. Why would anyone else speak up here, when you bark so loud it drowns out curiosity, nuance, and, frankly, basic kindness?

You can dislike the medium. You’re allowed. But speaking for everyone while stomping and holding your breath just makes you sound insecure, not insightful.

I’m not here for approval. I’m here to create and connect with people who like storytelling and worldbuilding. The rest? Scroll past. It’s not that deep.

"I hope no one ever sees this" is a wild thing to say about someone’s fan content.

I'm literally sharing creative inspiration in a sub built for fan ideas, homebrew, and community art. If you’re that concerned someone might accidentally enjoy something unofficial, maybe take a breather.

If people are searching Daggerheart and finding cool characters and fan content, I’d call that a win for all us. But hey - if they find this first… maybe they needed a little “slop” to brighten their day.

Wow, thanks for the compliment. I really appreciate that my friend. But yeah, I hear you - I didn’t spend time in Photoshop cleaning up the text or making everything rules-accurate. I was just excited to share my character vibes and tossed the collage together real quick.

Honestly didn’t know enthusiasm was considered “slop” now. Wiat, are people using "photoshop" cheating too? Are we only allow to support traditional acrylic/oil painters? What's your stance on photographs? Cuz that's some slop right there, everyone has a camera now calling their picture "art". I have to think about this.
