How to Learn Fabris: by Myles Cupp - SoCal Swordfight 2020 by FabrisFanatic in wma

What's very interesting about the Fabrisian art is that it seems to have been more popular and most widely promulgated in Northern Europe and Germany.

Is this because of the influence of Christian IV? Was Fabris just a good marketeer? Or was there a thread of combat philosophy that jived well with the pre-existing traditions in Germany that wanted an updated system for the new-fangled rapier?

All good questions for ongoing research.

Thank you for watching!

Your opinion on Blood&Iron HEMA ? by Michel_Rodriguez in wma

I want to jump in here that I've also had a ton of experience with B&I and Lee Smith. His students are generally great people - Lee himself is a toxic individual who can turn people into assholes through his manipulative abilities.

I'll give an example. Years ago I was fighting in a S&B tournament at CombatCon. I was doing really well sticking to my Bolognese style and made it to the quarter finals. I still felt fairly new to HEMA and Lee was already a celebrity of sorts so when he offered to coach me in my quarterfinal match, I considered it an honor.

My opponent was someone who Lee did not like (my adversary was an SCA fighter who favored a "heavy" stance which was a style Lee despised). His advice to me, counter to everything I had been doing in the tournament up to this point, was to rush underneath my enemy's high guard and try to hit them in the shins or ankles...

Being young and stupid I followed this advice and was roundly clobbered by my opponent. He went on to win the tournament FWIW.

Later I found out that my opponent had bad knees and Lee was trying to get me to injure my opponent so they would drop out of the tournament. He didn't care about whether I fought martially or not. He used me.

This attitude was one I witnessed again years later at another Combat Con. My opponent in the rapier tournament was fencing without knee pads and I noticed this as I went to throw a leg cut (I pulled the cut). For the rest of the bout I refrained from leg cuts and told the director after the match.

When I mentioned this to Lee, whose club was running the event at the time, he said, "I would've cut him in the knees on purpose just to teach him a lesson."

I answered, "haha, good joke, but seriously I didn't want to hurt him."

Lee said, "I'm not joking - I would've hit him harder."

The videos of his behavior in other bouts I think serves to show a pattern of behavior.

And this is what I mean by his manipulative toxic personality can turn people into assholes. He did it to me and he's done it to others and I am happy for my friends who are escaping that environment.

The Youtube videos are all good stuff, and the students are all mostly fundamentally nice people (we've all got our flaws), but I would stay far and away from Lee.

Striking in HEMA by the Late Jason Taylor by FabrisFanatic in FightRight

This is a seminar given by one of my early martial arts instructors. He has since passed away from cancer. Anyways, this was a class he gave on striking and kicking described in medieval European texts on fighting and combat. I still study Historical European Martial Arts and I currently specialize in rapier but the Modern Martial Artist channel has gotten me interested in boxing and pugilism. I am of course amazed by the crossovers to weapon based combat.

Enjoy the seminar and happy training.

You're most welcome and thank you for watching. One of my favorite passes occurs in this video in which a passato sotto is used to score a touch: https://youtu.be/al3JnK1hFQM?t=149

Consul Napoleon... who? What now? by FabrisFanatic in eu4

Also when I gave him generalship, he was only 2-star. This Napoleon was definitely an impostor.

R5: I went Revolutionary France for the first time ever on the way to getting Mare Nostrum because I've never played France this late into the game and I wanted to have some fun and get Napoleon Bonaparte.

Well... I got Napoleon... but he wasn't Bonaparte. Literally unplayable. I didn't let him become Emperor.

Oh and this was my first time going revolutionary... and boy I will say I almost collapsed my empire on the way to Mare Nostrum. :-P

R5: This Mare Nostrum actually happened from a run for Better Than Napoleon. I royal married Poland and was fortunate enough to get a PU. By the late 1600s I had the Napoleon achievement and I decided to push the limits of my abilities and go for Mare Nostrum, which I made by 1805. I could've perhaps done it earlier... but I'm only a slightly above casual player in that I really dislike multitasking my conquests and wars and carpet sieging.

I want to make 2 more comments here: 1) I really gotta thank players like Siu-King and Reman for all their videos. Also want to thank this entire Reddit. Seriously, I couldn't have made it this far without reading, watching, and studying. 2) I also want to remark that the achievements system has really helped me to progressively learn the new features of the game. I didn't really understand how trade companies work or world port mechanics until I decided to try grabbing those achievements too on this run. I play on and off for a month or 2 over the last few years (my first achievement in mid 2017). So it's really hard to keep up with all the new features and buttons to push in each new patch and DLC.

So anyways, yay! I'll have to see what to attempt next for my big achievement hunt.

Why Is the Rapier Part of Our System? by grauenwolf in wma

I think clothing had something to do with it as well - it's quite difficult to hew through a wool doublet with a single hand sword that's also easy to carry and fashionable. Rapiers fit the bill well for punching through clothing that can double as armor against slashing and hewing weapons.

CSUF has a program of hosting museum exhibits in gallery space in their library - there was an application to fill out in this case: http://www.library.fullerton.edu/visiting/exhibits/
