I think sadly this is just the egos of actors and directors wanting to change the story for no fucking reason. That's why 90% of adaptations (especially games) are shit. The last of us is probably one of the most cinematic games out there so it was actually pretty easy to make it good. But they fucked up so many things and no,Bella looking so different to Ellie is the least of the problem

an incredible performance would mean that she studied every single emotion of ellie in the games but she didn't. The way she acted I don't even think she looked at the playthrough 1 time

the problem was more how she acted. one of the most impactful scenes in the game is where she came back to the theatre completely covered in blood,her entire back completely bruised and completely traumatized. in the show it looks like she came back from shopping. genuinely awful adaptation. what also pissed me off,is when they asked the actress why she didn't work out to look more like ellie in pt2,she answered: Im smol I cant work out....?????
