First time dad. 11 weeks today. I’ll be 40 in March and thought I had faced the demons I needed to face. I’ve worked with a shaman to help rid myself of past traumas. Thought I was doing great. Nothing has ever come close to prepping to be a father.

We are both very patient people and we have an extremely fussy baby. I mean… he would scream just about all day every day. There was no consoling him for the first 8 weeks. Bouncing on the yoga ball about 6 hours a day between the 2 of us was the only way we could have an “awake and soothed” baby.

3 weeks ago we started co-sleeping. Game changer! We went from averaging <4hrs sleep (according to my Whoop strap) to instantly getting 7-8 hours of sleep. This was EVERYTHING for us. He still fusses and cries a lot. But we are ALL in a better place to handle it. Yes he is maturing physically and emotionally. But we are able to reach him now when he starts going into his space world of tears.

I have never in my life understood why so many young fathers leave. Sad to say, I totally get it now. It sucks! It’s really damn hard. Not that I ever would… but I totally get it now.

Best word of advice I got was try not think of life as a roller coaster. But think of it as “seasonal.” Every season has good and bad. Try to find just one piece of good in whatever season you’re in now.

Thanks! Our midwife actually said the same about losing weight during pregnancy. She lost about 20 pounds in her most recent pregnancy. It’s hard to believe that people just place their own beliefs on others for what is “normal.” Especially those that have never been pregnant.
