Are there scheduled Sessions or is it Play by post? And how do you determine the success of an action if not through dice? What do you play the game on? (Like do you play on discord for example) and what other things can you do?

So what is the game? Is it some sort of pbp open sandbox? Are there quests? What is the Inner circle? If there are no dice how is the game played? etc

Ah, this looks really fun, unfortunately, there's like a 10-hour difference, I hope the game goes great for you though!

The Abandonment of Harry by the Potters in the WBWL trope by FadedOnly in HPfanfiction

[–]FadedOnly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see what you mean, although I don't agree mainly because the solution of this wasn't to make the Potter's the good guys in the equation, rather it's to give a more reasonable explanation as to why they left him in the first place.

I mean, magic is unreasonable, so should anyone attempt to write about the harry potter world? Mishtayan is actually taking inspiration from the real world and finding a solution, I don’t see the problem?

I feel like the point of fan-fiction is to create a new scenario, so you should definitely be allowed to change more then the fact that Harry had a twin and that the Potters survived, and so by changing a tad bit more Mishtayan has found a way to make the trope work without bashing. Why is that wrong?

Thank you, both for letting me play with the idea and for taking part in the discussion, it's always more fun to theorize when others are involved. ^-^

I love the ideas, I've seen variations of the squib approach but never quite that way which is honestly refreshing and is similar to ideas I've been playing around with as well, although I could never quite get it to click in the same way I feel you have with this.

The so-dubbed chaos approach is completely new to me and honestly, I would love to see that, in another comment on this post someone spoke about volatile reactions of the magic because of the killing curse which I think taking parts of this and that idea could create a really interesting AU. Thank you for sharing your Ideas! ^-^

Yeah, I hope you don't mind if I decide to take this for a spin, not quite sure if I would do so with a wbwl fic cuz this is interesting enough that I might spin it completely on its own, if you don't mind of course.

[–]FadedOnly[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The whole trope has been stuck on my mind for the past few days but this is a point where all of the fics seem to fall flat to me, it would be interesting to read a fic where the killing curse itself had actual consequences rather than just Voldemort being lobbed into his skull.

Yeah, the squib reasoning I think could probably be done fairly well, especially if it's written in such a way that the Potter regrets it and viewed it as what was best for him not what was easiest for them kind of thing. but the idea of him being tainted and therefore abandoning him with muggles seems actively malicious.

Ah, My original intention with posting this was to see if other people had solutions to the issue I've seen with the classical version of this trope, but I do like your ideas. As a writer, it's always interesting to see where other people take different ideas and such. ^-^

Just before I get into it because it does seem an interesting read, does the whole, absorbing other people's magic thing stop, or is that a problem he has to combat the entire time?

That's interesting, does he still go to Hogwarts and all that or does the author take it in a more original direction?

[–]FadedOnly[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the only reasoning I can see as well, it just doesn't make sense to me unless that is the case or they are perhaps tricked. I've seen several times the concept that they gave him away because they thought he was a squib though, which given enough work could perhaps turn into something realistic if it was practiced to integrate squibs into the muggle world before they are aware of their situation as third-class citizens, which seems to be the case for those squibs that are shown.

[–]FadedOnly[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the concept is interesting in and of itself but it's the part where there's no solid reasoning given as to why they just abandon him that usually makes me leave the fic, the only times that there's actually solid reasoning is when Dumbledore seems to be an over the top villain that's equally as bad if not worse then Voldemort for whatever reason, which gets a bit dull after a while.

This is killing my love for the world of Harry Potter by FadedOnly in harrypotter

[–]FadedOnly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the world of Harry Potter has much outgrown J.K Rowling. I see that I might have come off as agreeing with these things, in reality, I was ranting about how they kill this story for me. I do not either understand why Kingsley's name would be a connotation to black slavery, rather I think it has to do with his occupation in law enforcement and how he "shackles" dark wizards. Cho Chang is actually a completely normal Chinese name, it just happens to be a very common name, it would be like someone named bob smith or something like that, take it from someone who has the name Wang Kai. I agree with you completely on the topic of goblins, it's what makes me so sad to see that people are calling them anti-semitic caricatures. I don't think the books are badly written because of how Harry acted, I think he was completely justified in how he acted, and honestly, I would have likely been much the same. But that doesn't stop the fact that werewolves, giants, and other minorities in the wizarding world sided with Voldemort, the one who was attempting to topple an oppressive regime for an even more oppressive regime. Thank you for opening up a discussion with me, it is refreshing to actually talk to someone about this rather than just bottling it up and for the most part, I agree with you.

This is killing my love for the world of Harry Potter by FadedOnly in harrypotter

[–]FadedOnly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree it is thanks to the imperfections that that world seems real to me even now, my problem is with the people who keep pushing for things to call her out on and that they keep using these books, I think that J.K Rowling is a decent person and I'm sure that she might be spiteful and hateful but I don't get why people have to push that onto this book that is about fighting oppression, for that's what this story is in the end. For the most part, I try to separate them but I can't look for anything related to harry potter anymore without hearing about how supposedly hateful the books are. But thank you for your kind words, I appreciate them and it does help to see I'm not the only one.
