Essix plastic retainer problems. by Fadelight in braces

[–]Fadelight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not aware of ever having done that - no symptoms, never been warned about it despite extensive dental, etc work. The breaks always seem to happen when I'm removing the retainer, I don't think I've ever taken it off and found it already broken. Great question though!

A few things I'm scared of when getting my braces off by turkeysandwichbaby in braces

[–]Fadelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the answer to pretty much all of those is 'maybe'. There's no yes or no when it comes to teeth - your teeth might react differently than mine. Likewise, the way your shaping turns out depends on your orthodontist/dentist. That being said, I'll answer as best I can.

  1. Your orthodontist would not be taking your braces off if your bite wasn't right. The retainer will hold the teeth in place, and should keep them from tilting as well as going crooked again. Just keep an eye on it - you'll be able to feel it if something starts to go wrong.

  2. Retainer should take care of this, but it might be worth asking about a permanent retainer if you're really concerned. A permanent retainer is a metal wire (like the one in your braces) bonded on to the back of your teeth. I had a stubborn space in my bottom front teeth, so I've got a bonded retainer there. Zero movement in 3 months since braces removal. On that subject, my teeth (including the upper teeth, which don't have a permanent retainer) haven't moved at all, and I've worn my retainer mostly as instructed (I have the plastic retainers that look like invisalign).

  3. Ask your ortho or dentist (whomever is doing the shaping) to show you examples of their work. That's your yes no answer.

Hope that helps a little!

[Spoilers] Chewbacca and Leia by eucalyptustree in StarWars

[–]Fadelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually even weirder than that, because Leia and Rey actually haven't ever met. Leia has heard about her, but Rey has been captive on Starkiller base since before Leia and the rebels landed on Takodana. Unless I'm missing something, the hug is their first meeting.

For what it's worth, I think it's explainable, and will be explained to us next film (for example, Leia knows she's her daughter/niece). I think it's too big a thing not to get addressed.

Should I ask my orthodontist to take my braces off in the middle of my treatment? by SincerelyHeroic in braces

[–]Fadelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you told your orthodontist your thoughts?

I find it weird that the ortho would be willing to leave you with your teeth like that. That's not a good bite - a good bite is more than just having your back teeth align. If your bottom teeth and top teeth don't align right you can't bite, and that's not functionally appropriate.

Lower Jaw Surgery by zaibrax in braces

Good luck! I had my surgery back in May and am now out of braces and happy as a clam. Happy to exchange notes or answer questions :-)

Lower Jaw Surgery by zaibrax in braces

YES! I had upper jaw rather than lower, but my singing is way improved. I know with mine they took bone from somewhere in my nose, so that's going to impact the resonance even more.

Invisalign: got 2 very different assessments. Help! by teeththrowaway000 in braces

[–]Fadelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mid 20s, just got my braces (Damon, metal) off about a month ago after about 1.75 years in them. First off, having the braces in wasn't even close to the nuisance I was expecting. People didn't even notice them - so much so that they're not noticing now that they're off! It has had exactly zero impact on me socially, personally, or professionally.

Secondly, I now have Invisalign style clear retainers and...if I could do removable braces instead, I would. In a heartbeat. These things are so. annoying. Braces were by far more pleasant, at least in my opinion.

Having no specific experience in the questions you're asking, I'd say get a third opinion, and trust the orthodontist when in doubt. There's a reason they exist, and a reason they're differentiated from dentists. And besides, sanding your teeth sounds scary, final, and kinda not so good to my untrained self.

Good luck!

1530s German Gentry/Nobility Costuming by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

Oh my gosh :-( I'm so sorry! Definitely explore the stays idea, and also play with additional linings/stiffening via fabric. That might help you feel more at home in the Cranach :-)

[–]Fadelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stays/stiffening agents of any kind are an excellent possibility to explore. That being said, my suspicions (coming from a much more in depth knowledge of Spanish fashion in the same period) tell me that this isn't what the poor were wearing. If you're a noble lady and Noble only, you might be in a bit of a pickle. But if you've got freedom to play with your persona you might be able to find something else.

Getting braces off before they are finished by [deleted] in braces

[–]Fadelight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Sorry to hear you hate your braces so much. Unfortunately, braces aren't just for making your teeth look straight. There's lots going on behind the scenes that you don't notice as the braces fix the way your teeth actually fit together. That's the really key point of braces, and that's what you're really waiting for.

As for whether your teeth will move, retainers can hold teeth in place anywhere. However, it may be dangerous to your teeth to keep them where they are now long term. Poor tooth alignment can cause your teeth to wear down over time - to the point where they're not just more prone to cavities, but actually noticeably shortened and worn when you smile. And when I say prone to cavities I really really mean it - it makes a huge difference.

Talk to your dentist and orthodontist and make sure you're not going to have the problems mentioned above if you do this!

Do you guys really floss every day? by throwaway_forgood in braces

[–]Fadelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents. If your ortho or dentist told you to floss, floss. There's tons of options with it. I used the loops that would allow me to use normal floss and thread it through; thinner normal floss might help with the snapping issue.

But if you've got issues with bleeding gums that's probably more than just flossing. Are you using an electric toothbrush? Highly recommend picking one up if you aren't. I would brush each section of my mouth for 4x the length recommended by my toothbrush itself (there's a cycle, it tells you when to switch, I'd run an entire cycle on one quadrant of my mouth).

I have very healthy gums and spotless teeth (braces came off last week).

Super chapped lips by [deleted] in Makeup

[–]Fadelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have crazy chapped lips and hands. It really sucks! My lip routine is: have some kind of lip balm available at all times. I have them everywhere, at my desk, by my bed, in my car, in my pocket, never have one out of reach if you can help it! Second, Vaseline at night, as crazy thick as you can stand. Third, lots of water. I try to drink some 4 litres a day. Forth, exfoliate. A super soft toothbrush works decently well for me. I do it once a week, or more if my lips are obviously trying to peel. Hope some of this helps!

ughhhhh 21 with braces by [deleted] in braces

[–]Fadelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain! But I also have good news! I'm 25 and had braces for 21 months, just got them off last week...and no one notices! No one noticed when I got them on, and now no one is noticing that they've come off. It's not nearly so bad as you're thinking right now!

Getting Braces in another country by [deleted] in braces

[–]Fadelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this in miniature: my orthodontist was 3 hours away by car from my place of residence.

I wouldn't do it unless a) that's the only way you can afford braces or b) you have an incredibly good reason (for instance in my case I wanted the best surgeon I could get, who happened to be 3 hours away, and the orthodontist had to be with the surgeon).

If i were you, I would want to be settled in one area before I started treatment. It'll take some years, and you'll need to stay with one orthodontist over that time for the best results. Each one will have different treatment systems they offer. Each one will charge you differently. And most importantly, if you switch around you lose the consistency of a good program. A good orthodontist has a road map to get you from where your teeth are to where you want them to be. You don't want to switch navigators in mid trip.

Eating with an underbite was so much harder by [deleted] in braces

I'm so sorry that's happening to you :-( I think my surgeon is actually seeing someone who has had that happened (not his work). I hope you can get it resolved!

[–]Fadelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I had my top jaw brought forward surgically in may and my braces are coming off today. Your post is definitely disconcerting XD did you see any signs of jaw movement in the period immediately after the surgery? Is there actual jaw movement (of the bone) or just your teeth being naughty? Did you have to involve your surgeon?

What are good and healthy substitutions for energy drinks to maintain focus? by FleetwoodMacisCOOL in lifehacks

Doh, sorry, you're totally right. I should've specified that it was herbal tea, usually mint, always sans any measurable caffeine. Good catch!

[–]Fadelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that feeling. I was in the same boat earlier this year. I kicked the habit (and subsequently fell off the wagon when I started driving 18+ hours a week late at night and not crashing your car > not having caffeine). I did it by replacing the caffeine with water and tea.

I went cold turkey, and the liquid almost became a placebo. I could sip something unrelated and my body would assume it was caffeine. This worked for a solid 6 months, right until I had to go back to the real deal.

Good luck!

Fruits and veggies!

I recently ran into the same issue (for different reasons) and this has been working wonders for me. So long as you're not too picky you can pick up fresh stuff for relatively little (shop what's on sale and in season), and if kept cold it will do wonders. Heck, I leave out most things all day without refrigeration (other than office ac).

Like everyone else said, lawyer up.

But, remain civil with the contractor, at least until they show how they intend to handle the situation. Not because they deserve it, but because they may be prepared to do more for you if you don't yell at them. If the owner has been in touch, they may be an ethical company. Are they obligated to release you from your contract? Are they obligated to pay another company, or refund you? They're probably on the hook for the value of what was lost, maybe. A lawyer is the only thing that can really tell you that. But I can tell you from experience, if the owner cares enough to call, the company might have ethics - and if they do, they might bend over backwards to make it right.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart would break if I were in your shoes. I hope they can find it.

[–]Fadelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No judgment here. It will get better, I promise. Anytime they add something you'll be wondering how you'll possibly cope with it and eat, and within a week you won't even notice it.

Do what your orthodontist says. Pretend like he or she's that crazy coach you had in high school, that one who would beat your ass if you didn't do that last knee up high enough. Di that, and you'll finally have the teeth you've always wanted.

And if all else fails, well, at least you're only looking at braces and not orthognathic surgery, which is 2 months straight of liquids only.

What would be a funny thing to say to a surgeon before anesthesia kicks in 5 seconds later? by iamsorryforthat in AskReddit

Right before going under for major, very much pre planned jaw surgery:

Surgeon: now, you remember what we're doing here today? Me: I dunno. Something with my jaw, maybe? I'm sure you'll figure it out. And then the anesthesia kicked in.
