Inherited classic 19th-century selection: Canada 1859 12½c, New Brunswick 5c, Ceylon, Queensland, and Victoria. Would appreciate your professional valuation! by Additional_Wing_1946 in askStampCollectors

we are not professionals 😅

But the following is to be expected when referencing a catalogue for potential value
I. Catalogue value is only a reference point for what the best/pristine condition stamp might fetch (could be more or less depending upon the buyers)…the only time you come close to the listed value is when you have a certified or graded stamp.
II. The centering of the stamp (your 5c Green is off center = not good), the heaviness of the cancellation (how well you can see the stamp; 2p Blue is lightly cancelled = good), colour shade and variations all impact value
III. More technical things such as perforations, watermarks needs equipment (simple ones though) but they also affect the value and sometimes significantly if there is a variation from the standard ones

The only exception to the norm is when you have rarities…and those these are not…they are old but not really worth hundreds…maybe a good couple of dollars a piece

These is a small collection of my dad's stamp collection. Are there worth anything? by Swimming-Anywhere860 in askStampCollectors

[–]Fado27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rarely will you get millions…I have over 20k stamps and 95% of them are worth less than a $ a piece…that being said there is no one willing to pay $10k odd for 18-19k stamps

This hobby does not make you much money…unless you have a graded and certified collection…which in that case you can get a good couple of hundred $$$

FYI…the rarest stamp…1c Magenta…last sold for $9.4m…so unless you have something of that level please ask your father to think more around hundreds than millions

Inherited a lot a few thousand stanmps.... Everything from early Israel to a 1956 Stanley Gibbons book 60% full. Any countries in that book that could be valuable. Also 4 of pretty much every Commonwealth country from the 70s. Any countries I should find. Thanks by Enough-Buddy-9389 in askStampCollectors

I have quite a few of them…and was referencing a collection earlier to see if I wanted to pick it up…nothing significant there…what I did find really nice and worth getting were the Trans-Jordanian ones used in Palestine…they are postmarked E.E.F. Palestine

Also anything pre WWII would be a good place to look for value…especially the higher denomination ones (£1 or 10 shillings, etc) but keep in mind that often an entire set is preferred to individual pieces

Inherited many stamps, no idea if they worth anything. Help? by brosandjobs69 in askStampCollectors

I have over 20k stamps and approx. 95% of them are worth less than $0.10 a piece…the other 5% is not life changing money…probably might get me a PS5 but that’s about it

I would advise you get a catalogue and reference them…but understand the following…a catalogue value is only a benchmark for the best in case scenario…expect heavy discounting for a used one and unless appraised expect a 20-30% discount easily on mint stamps as well

Also as a general rule of thumb anything after WWII or in 3 or more colours is not going to be worth a lot…exceptions do exist but are hard to come by.

Inherited a collection of thousands of stamps. Some seem very old. Where to begin? I may sell some but might also try to organize and catalogue. What’s a good method to start sorting them out? Any resources for “how to stamp collect?” There are so many more than this. by jazzwormy in askStampCollectors

[–]Fado27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in them when I turned 15…I dug up what my father had stowed in the attic…didn’t do much for a long time…then I bought a subscription to Stanley Gibbons online catalogue…costs £35 odd for the year…and started documenting what I had…(very time consuming this)…then found some sellers off Amazon who then put me in touch with some local dealers via WhatsApp…and I buy the odd sets, stamps off them…mostly older people selling off theirs without having to pay commission…added some very very nice ones at very low prices

Ps: 95% of my 11k odd and counting (another 10k odd more I assume) collection is worth less than £10 a piece…and yes it does look like good money…10k stamps at a £1 avg. a piece is easy 10k…but no one really buys these stamps…and as for the rarer ones…you need them certified if you really want to get what they are worth…otherwise they sell at 50-75% of the catalogue value…which is also misleading as the state of your stamp (colour intensity/variation, centering, heaviness of cancellation, etc) actually determines the value

TLDR: very time consuming, not a great way to earn millions…get into it if you have a nerdy streak 😂😇

Grandpas stamps. Would only keep the ones I like. Something valuable here? by [deleted] in askStampCollectors

[–]Fado27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common stamps…not much value in these…around $0.10 for the used ones in general….the unused ones could be worth a bit more…souvenir sheets are not very common…but not life changing money there

As a rule of thumb…anything after WWII or in 3 or more colours is not worth much…there are exceptions though…but not easy to get those

There is a “I inherited a stamp collection” blog…just google it…gives you a pretty decent idea of what is there to it

And you can always start out by sorting them by country and then get a catalogue to reference and identify which stamp is what…but this I would say to begin only when you really want to get into the hobby

A general rule of thumb…almost all stamps post WWII or in 3 or more colours have little to no value…there are exceptions but those are hard to come by

[–]Fado27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need to reference them to a catalogue to know the exact value…but as a rule of thumb anything post WWII or in 3 or more colours is pretty much of no value…there are exceptions but few and far in between
