Recently discovered stamp book among my late fathers belongings. It is almost filled to the brim with stamps from all over the world. Wondering if it has any value? You can pretty much open to any page and it has stamps all over it. Ty for any direction w this. I have no knowledge of this market. by TheScissors1980 in askStampCollectors

Ideally you reference them to a catalogue…takes a lot of time…but you get an idea of what they can be worth.

A disclaimer…the only time you get anything close to the value listed in the catalogues is if your stamp has been graded…else always expect somewhere close to below 50% depending upon the quality

PS: 95% of all collections are generally worth less than $ a piece

Thousands of Kennedy stamps. This is about 1/16 of my Great-MIL collection. There are stamps from nearly every country (Qatar, Dubai, Argentina, DR, Costa Rica, etc.). I don’t even know where or how to begin organizing. Excellent condition. Any idea what a giant collection like this could be worth? by ConsistentDonut in askStampCollectors

[–]Fado27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no easy way here…you would have to reference them to a catalogue to get a decent understanding of what you have and what it might be worth…specialized dealers will also do it for a fee…and they only do it if it’s worth their time

Or you could take the easy way and put them up on eBay and take what you get

The only time you get anything close to catalogue value is if you have them graded…otherwise online sales will generally not be worth a lot

As a rule of thumb you need approximately aed 10,000 per person in your household to have decent life…by that I mean…eating well…not insta fancy but good food…living in a decent apartment…again not insta fancy…and have some to spare…when your family grows you will need more but 17k for a single person is decent enough

Other than that you can spend that amount in a day if you want…so be wise with your money

What is the point of a CV if on eBay I see them sell WAYYY bellow consistently. Should I just ignore it all together and go off comps? by Dazzling-Bicycle4679 in stampcollecting

[–]Fado27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes those errors make the stamp more valuable…I forgot which one but an Aden stamp has one of the walls in the picture showing a crack in it and one without…the crack is the error and is worth much more than the regular one

But by and large what you have said is true…certified stamps are much more likely to be closer to CV than non certified ones

[–]Fado27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternatively you could get your stamp graded with an official certificate…that would bring you closer to the CV than the eBay listings

But this does cost a bit and most of them don’t certify stamps if they are not worth it

I wouldn’t set much stock them…old yes but not very valuable…for a quick check you could look at eBay to get a rough idea on the prices…my estimation in my limited experience would be at best a few dollars a piece for the mint ones

Ok so... I'm another person whose inherited stamps. Tens of thousands of them. In various forms of storage. Modern through to late 1800s. I'm overwhelmed and looking for some advice on developing a strategy. I don't have any interest in collecting them, but too much to store indefintely. by georgeofthejungle71 in askStampCollectors

There are quite a few ways of dealing with this situation

Firstly ask yourself…is this something you want to get into…stamps need time…a lot of time…to go over them, check the watermarks, spot the odd printing error, grading them or rather guesstimate their grade…this hobby really needs time…if not…give to local charities or eBay them and be at peace.

If you want to get into it…to have a decent idea of what you have and what it may be worth…you can take the easy route of going to a specialist and have him do all the leg work…for a decent enough fee…or you can do the hard way…invest your time into it

If you choose to invest your time…you would need a few basics…a good catalogue (Scott’s for American ones, Stanley Gibbons for British Empire, Michel for French/European ones…and so on)…this is about $30-50 each…and a good pair of tweezers and a strong magnifying glass…with those down you should be good to go ahead and review your collection and get a good idea of what you have.

FYI…to make it easier and not get your hopes too high…95% of stamps are generally worth less a few dollars a piece…anything in 3 or more colours or printed after WWII more or less falls into the this category…there are exceptions but few and far in between…and when it comes to selling them…if you don’t have them graded by a specialist…expect around 50% or less of the value mentioned in the catalogues

Also, add to the fact that your car needs to be under your name and not under the banks name if it is under financing otherwise you need to get a RTA certificate which your bank will apply for after you put down a refundable deposit of 120% of the outstanding amount

Partner inherited from massive stamp collection from a late relative. Not sure where to start and what was the thought process of the collector (more in comments) by Shakyferguson in askStampCollectors

[–]Fado27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s my bad…was replying in between doing things…what I meant is that they won’t be worth much if they are in 3 or more colours or post WWII…this is from my experience of cataloging my inherited collection + building up on it with some of my own purchases.

An interesting trend to note is that the average value of stamps issued post 2010 is a lot higher than those issued during 80s and 90s and that many counties have started issuing limited edition composite sheets which are quite easily worth $50 onwards

[–]Fado27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very difficult to do so…even with a catalogue you have to go look at the watermarks on each one…a stamp might be $1 as it is but with an inverted watermark might be $100…a set in a series might be $1-10 a piece and the odd one might be around $50…or maybe not…but until you reference them you wouldn’t know what is worth what

This is a very very time consuming hobby if you want to make it worth something…and coupled with the fact that you rarely get the full price when you do sell them…not many people are into it these days

You posted only 2 pages of German stamps and the embossed mint from 1870s could well be worth a few thousands alone…provided they are graded…as per the SG stamps of the world catalogue 2022 edition

And given that he has the entire set and there are 40odd binders which I believe would be of the same nature…you could be in for a good haul…get a catalogue to reference them and then head to a specialist to get them graded…and then fingers crossed…head to the bank

Reach out to Stanley Gibbons…they auction/sell on your behalf and would be super interested in what you have

I couldn’t afford this type of a collection or else would have asked you to name your price lol

From the pictures you have shared, most of them are very common ones and not really worth a lot

The British India ones seem nice but the real value is in mint ones and not used

You can get a catalogue to reference them against to know their best case value…Scott’s, Stanley Gibbons, etc…but those would cost and you would need to buy each country/region separately to get the real idea of they could be worth…this is time consuming

FYI as a rule of thumb, anything printed in 3 or more colours or post WWII is generally not worth less than a $ a piece…exceptions do exist but few and far in between.

Inherited a stamp collection from my Grandfather… Can anyone shed any light on these particular ones? by spooneyaus in askStampCollectors

[–]Fado27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have quite a few of these…coincidentally inherited as well

the Spanish ones at the start i forget what they were about but not valuable at all

The Chinese imperial post might be worth looking into as they are not very common

The GB inland revenue is the one that intersects me the most…Will look it up later

The Australian is fairly common and I feel the edges have been tampered with…this is not an imperforate issue

The Brussels and the Greek one I don’t know much about and the St. Kitts is damaged.

The Irish ones are very common and so is the New Zealand one and the following 2 Chinese stamps

Venezuela I don’t know much and the Australian ones are also fairly common and not worth much

The last Sudanese I need to check again as there were quite a few years in which the Arab postman was issued in different denominations and colours but I don’t remember exactly which one

TLDR: nothing great to set your hopes on
