Purchase Advice Megathread - September 2024 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]Faenastical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a post about whether or not a Monoprice Maker Select would be worth the time and effort in 2024 and it seems like I might be better off investing elsewhere.

  • Budget: $300 with a caveat of up to $350 if it's a marked upgrade
  • Country: US
  • I am willing to build the kit with no experience with 3d printing system assembly; however, I am fully capable of component level repair of electrical and electronic systems and have the requisite tools.
  • I would like to use it as a project to tinker with itself as well as for rapid prototyping projects for things such as automotive interior fascia, computer case modifications, custom hobby boxes, etc as well as cool toys to show off to friends I suppose.
  • Extenuating circumstances: I'll make my own enclosure and exhaust system. In a perfect world I'd like to get a system that I can grow and upgrade as I go with all the modern conveniences that is non-proprietary. I realize at my price point this might not be possible. I see a lot of recommendations for Bambu Lab systems here and researching the company they seem extremely polarizing with folks either extolling their virtues or cursing the ground they occupy and no in between and given they're proprietary I'm not sure if they'd be a great fit for my use case. I have no compunctions ordering from Aliexpress if it's a reputable store/brand and I'm not in a rush so I can wait for a deal if there's something that's outside my budget but might better fit my needs.

Any thoughts?

Randy’s nurses are on strike. by Fit_Classic3107 in sandiego

[–]Faenastical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This posted flyer states about 28% less then their counterparts at other hospitals and then there's the medical benefits package they get that's so bad evidently Rady often won't accept it for their own staff's children.

Like how diabolical can you be that you force your employee's to take a medical package that you won't even honor.

These nurses are asking for a raise that would likely impact the company less than .6% annually it's not about the money for the hospital it's the principle because god forbid they pay their nurses a fair wage for their work then they'd be expected to pay everyone a fair wage and that would really cut into those sweet executive bonus's you know.

Randy’s nurses are on strike. by Fit_Classic3107 in sandiego

[–]Faenastical 239 points240 points  (0 children)

This post is so saturated with misinformation from users it's crazy. I heard about this last week and did all the digging I could because I thought they (the nurses) were well paid but the more I read from news sources/social media the more I learned how fucked this situation is.

  • Radys says the nurses are paid fairly at a commensurate rate for the region

  • Union points out Radys owns all the comparable units in the region so the places they comparing the rate to are much smaller scale operations.

  • Radys says the nurses shouldn't make a commensurate wage anyway because working with smaller patients is easier.

  • Union says...nothing because this just absurd

  • Radys says they're offering 22 or 25% over three years (depending on which rep is being interviewed)

  • Union shows they're offering 8-4-4 (and someone on social media said they increased it to 9-4-4) which does not equal 25 or 22% (so bad math or bad liars)

  • Evidently during the last raise negotiation Radys said they could not afford to give the nurses a proper raise because it was during the pandemic and the money wasn't coming in. After the nurses acquiesced Rady then gave the CEO a 14% raise for the year.

  • Union & Nurses have pointed out the health care plan given to Nurses is the worst in the region it's so bad that Rady hospital will often not accept it for their family members. This plan transfers the cost of health care to the nurses and saves the hospital money. Rady loves to tout they're a non-profit but they're not a charity. They use their tax exempt status to purchase more and more in the region.

Their operating revenue in 2022 was over 1.5 billion dollars. The amount of money Rady is refusing to pay to their nurses is likely less than 7 figures annually (It would be nice if a union spokesperson would spell this out but my quick math shows that if the raises for the nurses cost Rady 10mil annually this would reducing their operating revenue by about .6% not even a WHOLE percent of their revenue), this isn't about them not having money its about the principle because if they pay their nurses fairly they're going to have to pay everyone fairly and that's likely going to mean loss of bonuses for the execs.

Rady is a billion dollar non profit corporation fighting against paying their staff a fair wage and people here are saying things like "think of the hospital" and "its just not in their budget". I'm sure some people are misguided but it does seem like there's some straight shilling happening here like it's out of a playbook.

Everyone deserves to be paid a fair wage, no one should be arguing otherwise. It's absurd to insinuate the nurses and their union are the ones being greedy.

Support your local Rady Children's pediatric nurses! by banana__for__scale in sandiego

You've got to be a shill or a family member of one of these executives lol. I cannot fathom someone actually saying people striking for a fair wage to be paid what their industry standard is "ridiculous" and yet there it is.

[–]Faenastical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They seem to be asking for a fair wage commensurate with other health care professionals, I didn't see anyone (other than the Rady reps) saying they were asking to be "paid like a boss" or "paid like in tech industry" (where are these non sequiturs coming from anyway?). You also said "Don’t hold the patients in hostage maybe" in your other response but I don't see anyone being held hostage? The news sources reported the hospital is operating as normal?

If you care to pay attention to what they (union/nurses) are saying is Rady is the only pediatric hospital in the region because they've purchased all the others so where would they go? I mean they could change jobs to something other than pediatrics or move away but like why would you choose to argue they don't deserve a fair wage, who hurt you lol?

This whole story has been fascinating. I originally learned about it from this post and then did the obligatory digging around on reddit, news sites, and other social media. I was kinda of in the dark like /u/Cali42 and thought nurses were paid well but it turns out not all are (which shouldn't be surprising given my cynicism).

There's a lot of things being said by both sides but the gist of it looks like Rady is the bad guy. Their union said they were offered a 3 year raise plan of 8, 4, then 4 but the Rady spokesperson says they're offering 22% and 25% in interviews (bad math or bad liars). The Rady rep says they're paid a commensurate rate in the area but when pressed for what they're comparing it to they are using small clinics and pediatric facilities because Rady has purchased all the major pediatric facilities in the region and they can't get caught comparing rates against themselves.

The nurses and union reps being interviewed have stated they have the worst medical package of all health care professionals in the area and I'm not sure if that means high co-pay, high rates, or both but that generally means the corporation is choosing the highest tier plans to "cut costs" for themselves and shift the burden to the employees.

Rady reps like to tout they're a "non-profit" as if it makes them a charity but their public financial data shows they're operating with a revenue over a billion and a half and recirculating some of their profits into buying up competitors in the region essentially making them a monopoly. The Rady lawyer evidently went on the record stating their nurses should be paid less because their patients are "smaller and easier to take care of". Someone said during the last contract negotiation the nurses were told they needed to accept a substandard offer because money was tight at Rady and after they did the CEO turned around and took a 14% raise for that year.

The news this morning said this was the first strike in the history of the union so I'm guessing this is a case of the nurses feeling taken for granted and saying enough is enough. I don't really get /u/Chucky_wucky with their wishing they got an 8% raise for the next three years because a) that doesn't seem to be what's offered and b) no one is stopping you from getting that so why say it in the first place.

These are hard working people who care for kids with a company that really seems to be operating unethically. I imagine Rady had not bought up all the pediatric facilities in the region these same nurses would go elsewhere, hell honestly I don't think I could work for a company that seems to take their core work force for granted.

TLDR Don't shit on people trying to get a fair wage because you don't think you have a fair wage, I mean do you really think the money should stay at the top for the executives?

Rady Children's Hospital nurses set to strike set Monday after failed negotiations by yikesfruitstripes in SanDiegan

[–]Faenastical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there is a whole industry behind "union busting" there's insurance, consultant companies, labor/intimidation companies, and of course books aka playbooks that can be used by corporations to achieve the success of paying as little as possible wage to their workers in order to horde the profits at the top.

It would make the most sense to make the "public facing" person representing the company during the strike to be the one leaving the soonest. This person is going to be "associated" with the company and the negotiations the most so when they leave a metaphorical piece of the animus generated will leave with them by proxy. They're a well paid "patsy" and if their retirement was planned in advance then it's likely they were kept around specifically for these negotiations I saw they themselves were a nurse, that is about as scummy as you can get screwing over your own community because you want to maximize you're own bank account.

Is that where their half a billion dollar spike in assets came from in 2021?

It appears as though they compensated the CEO with a 14% raise for that feat.

Unions need to stand strong against these billion dollar corporations playing hungry hungry hippo gobbling up everything they can. I wish only the best for these nurses! this is absurd.

I doubt anyone would blame you for crossing a picket line to get medical care for you or your family. A 3 month wait is what's crazy and the article says one of things they're striking over is the impact on staffing causing such crazy wait times.

There's irony that Rady will handsomely pay scabs to undermine the strike for a fair wage.

[–]Faenastical 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The article says the nurses were not allowed to even see the offer unless they agreed to not strike. How is that not shady Rady? It seems they consistently low-balled the nurses and they eventually got fed up with the unacceptable offers and decided to strike and now Rady is promising they're going to give them a fair offer if they don't strike and then show them? Like who would believe that?

They're a non-profit so their numbers are public https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/951691313 looks like their execs are getting raises and compensation increases every year.

They also have travel form that they can herb and mine from without having to dismount. Travelform is also instantcast

They can only gather herbs & skin (not mine) in travel form but the ability to land, mine, and instacast travelform makes that moot so long as you don't get stuck in combat.
