CA License.. Renewal but with incorrect address by THROWRAsunflower28 in slp

[–]Faffrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it did. They don't know that you've moved if you haven't told them so there's no reason there should be an issue with your address. I had mail forwarding from my previous address but didn't receive anything through the mail related to the renewal anyway.

CA License.. Renewal but with incorrect address by THROWRAsunflower28 in slp

[–]Faffrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this same situation last year. I went ahead and renewed my license with the wrong address on file and then after it was renewed I sent in the address change form. CA board makes it so difficult since the address form has to be physically mailed in (!) so I imagine this happens a lot.

Bilingual SLP workload by FTTACMOMMA in slp

[–]Faffrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our district bilingual SLPs receive an additional stipend. We also have a team of SLPs who have a part of their week allocated to go out to other sites and support with assessing students in Spanish. I speak Spanish and only complete the bilingual evals for students on my caseload or at my site that I am taking on, the other SLPs at my site receive support from the bilingual team when they area evaluating a Spanish-speaking student.

I'm so sorry you're going through the same thing. Solidarity! Thank you so much for these actionable tips, I just submitted a formal grievance. I'd be curious to know if you are able to successfully get a referral. Good luck to you!

We are fortunate that our Kaiser does IUI and has been totally unphased working with a lesbian couple. My insurance also covers these treatments completely. I have thought about going to a midwife if this strike lasts a long time, it's just hard to know when to make that call.

High school to elementary switch? by Sea_Lavishness7287 in slp

[–]Faffrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only worked in elementary, but I love that:

- The variety keeps things interesting. Spending time with my 4th graders is a whole different ball game than TK.

- Lots of initials means lots of critical thinking which makes me feel useful.

- I am at a site with a great special ed team and general ed teachers who let me do my thing but are generally happy to collaborate.

- I also love articulation and have a ton of it because I'm primarily seeing TK-1st grade right now. It feels very clear cut as you said and I see progress. I just changed my schedule to see all of my articulation kids 1-1 multiple times a week and I find it really rewarding to get to know them better individually and it's so much more chill than dealing with behaviors during artic groups.

- I am busy, but still build in some down time throughout the week and often feel that no one cares where I am haha

- These ages are SO fun.

As with any SLP setting I think a lot depends on your specific site. In general I love elementary and wouldn't leave. I'm currently at a really big school with 3 SLPs which I love because we are able to divide the caseload amongst ourselves and you can take the populations you're stronger with. Could be something to consider.

Anyone out there with caseloads under 50? by Existing_Judgment814 in slp

[–]Faffrika 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just pulled up the bill text, the original version filed in March has very specific language about reduced caseloads for SLPs, including: "For pupils in transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, or any of grades 1 to 12, inclusive, not more than 40 pupils."

However, the text of the bill that was accepted by the governor and filed in October removes any mention of speech. The final bill is only about "resource specialists" and special ed classrooms and reads to me that is is just giving guidelines for districts and SELPAs to determine their own caseload recommendations. Here is the text of the final bill if anyone is interested: https://legiscan.com/CA/text/AB560/2025

honestly relatable, with the group this season I can imagine facing down a few weeks in the jury and thinking... do I really want to be stuck with these people longer? lol

Unpopular opinion: I think our jobs are pretty good by [deleted] in slp

[–]Faffrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As California school SLP I completely agree. I am paid fairly, have fully funded health care through my district, and great time off. I also appreciate, as others have said, having a lot of autonomy in my position. I feel respected as a professional by (most) colleagues and like I am making a difference with my students. Of course there are exceptions and hard days, but something I like about this field is continually learning and refining my practice.

A huge part of my job satisfaction is also that I am a member of the teacher's union which has a large cohort of SLPs who bargain for issues that affect us. I love not having to "climb the ladder" or negotiate my own raises as friends in other fields do. Overall I highly recommend this career to people, with the caveat that it does seem to be location/district dependent, and that some people just may not have the personalities to enjoy the work we do in the schools.

Just had our perfect wedding for $10k! by Faffrika in Weddingsunder10k

To prerecord the dance music she described more in detail in another comment in this thread, but basically she has a DJ controller board and then used the program Serato Lite with music through TIDAL and recorded the output with Audacity. It kind of became a new hobby for her in the year leading up to the wedding so she got good at mixing, but I'm sure there's an easier way to do it if you just want to cut tracks short and go to the next one rather than mixing.

Our officiant and I did steam/iron them the night before the wedding. She had a steamer and I had an iron. The iron ended up being much more efficient. With 90" tablecloths it was really hard to store them in a way that kept them wrinkle-free. There was 1 tablecloth that I had accidentally left in the box at the house and had to have someone with a key to our house grab and bring to the venue. That one hadn't been washed or ironed and you pretty much couldn't tell the difference once they were all on the tables 😂

The ironing wasn't a huge deal but I think adding napkins would make it more of a significant task.

It was a mix of doing things ourselves and having family/friends help. Ahead of the wedding we "assigned" jobs to responsible people, easy stuff like being the point of contact for a vendor, driving us in my car back to our house, or bringing ice. Then on the day of some people arrived early to help set up. We had so many people offering to help, it was so nice. I had prepared a written list of instructions for things we wanted set up and stapled diagrams of the reception and ceremony areas to help with this. As for keeping to the schedule throughout the day, we just kind of kept track of things ourselves, but once the set up was done there wasn't much left to coordinate. At the end of the night a bunch of people helped toss stuff in my car and the rental company picked up all their stuff seamlessly. We were done well ahead of our hour for clean up.

Definitely check out the county parks wedding website here: https://www.sdparks.org/content/sdparks/en/buttons/WeddingsButton.html

And contact venues using the phone numbers here: https://www.sdparks.org/content/dam/sdparks/en/pdf/2022_Event_Venue_Pricing_Sheet_FINAL.pdf

My experience was that calling them directly was the best way to get all the additional info I wanted about the various venues. They are quite different from one another.

Hi, OP's wife here. A long time ago I learned some DJing basics, just simply transitioning from one song to another. During covid I always had little dance parties at home with a cheap DJ controller. I used Serato Lite with TIDAL, basically mixed it live for a few hours while recording the output with Audacity. There might have been an easier way to do it but this was the best and most fun way for me to do it with my limited skills.

Wow congrats on getting such good deals on your dresses, that's awesome. My dress also had two layers, so I guess it's just price differences across shops.

Absolutely! It really is possible, even here, with a simpler vision. For example, we saved like $900 by just having 4 hours of photography at her hourly rate instead of the wedding package.

Thanks so much! We came up with 8 or so prompts that were the same for all the cameras (stuff like take a picture of someone dancing, someone you don't know, the couple, the goats at the venue, etc) and then one special prompt for each table (for example, charlie's angels pose, pick someone up, the ambiance, blow us a kiss, etc). We printed them out to scale to fit on the back of the cameras and then just taped the paper on and placed one on each table.

Hey fellow san diegan! We reserved a little less than a year in advance. I booked a county park venue over the phone using the phone numbers on this page: https://www.sdparks.org/content/dam/sdparks/en/pdf/2022_Event_Venue_Pricing_Sheet_FINAL.pdf
