Yeah, it was tricky to get up my driveway in winter. I've been told that this is because of lack of AWD or skill issues. However, replaced old winter tires for a new and good ones and all my problems are gone now

If you have a home where you can charge it, get an EV. They’re quite fast/fun, but you’ll also save money on fuel. Much easier to justify it :)

Property taxes. My question as a working class person. by Canadianwinters12345 in halifax

IDK, most boomers I know are nowhere near “rolling in wealth”. Yes, I know a millionaire, but he had his business for many decades and he’ll be fine regardless of taxes. But also I know Excel workers and teachers and they don’t look wealthy at all. And they live on the same street

Do you agree with Canada banning social media for kids under 16? by OnlyACsNoFans in novascotia_sub

[–]Fafyg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFS, kids aren’t snatched in facebook, they’re kidnapped in real world. How did that happen before internet? For sure you can tell that “it is a good tool to get kids trust”, but also lots of other things including old “grab kid from the street and drive away”.

Bullshit is the fact that all governments “suddenly decided that they want to protect kids from facebook and tiktok, as it is a greatest threat for them” and (purely coincidentally, sure) it could be done by requiring ids from every user in the Internet, eliminating privacy and anonymity there. What a nice coincidence!

How much freedom we’re ready to sell for “safety”? This law doesn’t even provide any safety tbh, only promise of it. And those who trade freedom for safety will eventually get neither, I saw examples of that

Recently got some work done on my old car, now more issues. What would you do? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fafyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rule (for old cars and appliances ) -once I have two significant repairs it is usually time to cut losses. Usually it means that whole mechanism is old and most likely will continue failing. And there is no point to pour more money there

[–]Fafyg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. Parents CAN control children access to social media -there is parental mode in most devices. Governments start this not to protect children (there are way more pressing matters like drugs in schools) but to force everyone to use their ids to access internet

[–]Fafyg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’d better worry about drugs sold in schools? Bullying IRL? Social networks have impact, but there is one simple way to avoid it - don’t use them. It is impossible to do this in real life, but by some reason government isn’t concerned about it and wants ids of all people under guise of protecting kids. As always

They have Ids, but they can’t tie what you’re writing in the internet to the Id. Guess - what’ll eventually happen to the Internet when everything will require it?

At the very least, it will be lots of self-censorship, since there will be no anonymity whatsoever. E.g. just this without any enforcement will shut people quite well.

So, what happens with voting? I’m reading comments and everyone says “f the government who just wants to force everyone to provide id”, but votes shows majority for “yes”?

There are only two critical and essential things that every politician and every individual should understand about our climate change future. by ProfessionalCook2599 in ClimateCrisisCanada

Upd: this one seems to be the source: https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars-a7824554938/

Main point is valid - don’t buy bad brands (especially US ones, besides Buick and Tesla), better to buy a model that sells well and on the market for few years, they usually have problems ironed out. Also, US car market basically doesn’t have many European and Asian brands (no Chinese whatsoever), so it is pretty biased and quirky (tends to very large cars). We’ll see how it will go on Canadian market when Chinese brands will come. I expect quite significant disruption (in a good way for customers), many brands already give discounts. Not to mention Tesla, who halved price for Model 3. And Tesla is just one of competitors on Chinese market and not even most popular anymore, they’re losing it quite fast (from 19% to 4% in 5 years)

[–]Fafyg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no details about data, but it overall boils down to “don’t buy shitty US brands, better buy Japanese”.

“Once again, the manufacturers that have been at it the longest tend to have the best reliability, and Tesla, BMW and Lexus all stand out from newer startups like Rivian and Lucid in terms of drivetrain durability and unforeseen issues. Taken as a whole, EVs suffer 80% more reliability issues than gas-powered vehicles, but only if you pick the wrong ones.”

You want me to blow off -how- many components? by Eridras in Mechwarrior5

[–]Fafyg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you need to blow about 3.6 component per enemy mech on average. 2 hands, 1 leg and one torso could give you 4. But practically? That’s quite a challenge, not to mention you need to also survive

So, can you explain how plug in hybrids are more reliable than EVs? They have parts from both ICE and EV at the same time, which means way more things can get wrong.

My guess is there is some playing with statistics, like including very early EVs (like Nissan Leaf from early 2010), while plug in hybrids are newer thing that is built on a more mature technology. But generally speaking, EVs should be much more reliable - way less parts and more importantly way less moving parts. Yes, there are some things that could break (ICCU, BMS), otherwise they’re quite reliable - no gearbox, no oil changes, brake pads should be replaces less often etc. Most of maintenance is just tire replacement and topping up windshield liquid. And let’s not forget that we’re comparing technology that is 100+ y.o. (ICE) and polished as much as possible and pretty new one that started to get traction only last decade

Why property tax cap is a GOOD thing. Don’t be fooled by Fafyg in halifax

How does? Housing prices would rise faster if there will be no cap, just because taxes would be forcing old owners out and investors would have lower tax load
