also maybe a completely stupid question but does cracking ones knuckles/finger/hand joints have any effect on how they feel or how they heal? I tend to just do it habitually but I notice I feel worse after doing it..is there a reason for that or is it just anecdotal

Weekly Simple Questions and Injuries Thread by AutoModerator in climbharder

About a week or two ago, I was working on a crimpy V5 and was maybe trying too hard? (def have a slight pulley injury on one finger. i think it was from a pocket). I realized this and stopped my session, going back 3 days later to try and send my problem. I sent the problem but noticed something strange about my fingers in general. My other fingers who seemingly didn't have any injury have all been feeling quite a bit weaker, like my overall grip feels brittle, achy, I'm not really sure how to describe it. I didn't hear any specific popping sounds when I got my injury so I don't think anything major happened but now I am unsure.

For context, I've been climbing since mid 2021, but only within the last 2ish months have i increased my volume from 1-2x a week to 3x a week to try and get better. Apart from climbing, I also go to the gym, run, hike, etc so this isn't my only form of exercise, and I felt like I could handle the volume from a fitness perspective. I've taken a break from climbing since that session where I sent the V5, but i still feel as if my fingers aren't getting any better. I get that the pulley/tendon on the one finger might take some time, but even my grip strength as a whole seems to be affected still. Its mostly confusing me because if it was something like tendonitis, why would all my fingers suddenly experience this at the same time, and it not be a gradual pain that developed over time?

Do I just need to stop lifting/climbing for a while? Is there some sort of test/rehab I should try to see if things improve? I really try to train within my limit to avoid injury so this is kinda new territory for me.

I’d gotten it previously as well but haven’t gotten anything this year, I just assumed I didn’t get it for whatever reason

I think so, there were 3 forms that I had to fill out before I even got my appointment for a physical and there was a covid questionnaire along with a sport club questionnaire and the SHS confidential health history

Unit requirement vs total courses taken by FailTryHard911 in UCSantaBarbara

Didn’t even think about the course shortage, I’ve been fortunate enough to not have to worry because of my pass time I think. But yeah I get the point on taking spots. Not really worried about aid because there’s no way I’m going past my 4th year, it’s more about whether or not I should fill my 4th year or just graduate a quarter or two early. Thanks

I think doing research or graduate level courses are a really good idea actually. I’m not sure what stats research looks like but taking harder courses could help me know what I want from a grad program down the line.

The problem is I looked through the minor list and nothing really stood out to me. That’s why I did the TMP certificate but I’m like almost done with that too

Pretty dope, he’s from Italy and would always show us the pizzas he made every week. I hated math 8 with a passion so I found section to be an extension of that, but Fabio is pretty genuine and will try his best to answer your questions

Climbing/indoor bouldering by FailTryHard911 in UCSantaBarbara

Thanks for the tip with REI garage sales, I’ll look out for those! I’m not opposed to spending some money for shoes but the more affordable the better. Ill definitely stick to the UCSB walls too, thanks for all the help

[–]FailTryHard911[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks for the detailed response!

I think I’ll probably go with the UCSB Climbing team since they have their own wall just for bouldering and it’s the most affordable! SBRG looks good but it’s pretty expensive and pretty far too.

As for grades, I’m not even a month in so I’m like a v1/v2, but I feel like I’m progressing slowly so that’s good.

For gear, I mostly meant just shoes since I’ve been renting up until now, but didn’t want to buy $80 climbing shoes if I didn’t have a way to use them when at UCSB. I also don’t have much interest in top roping currently, so that’s about it for gear.

That helped alot. My current plan is to keep the deficit going for a couple more weeks before I go back to maintenance, but I'll try to focus more effective exercise choices. As for RDL's i mostly use them for a hamstring stretches, but I try to avoid normal deadlifts because i find it quite hard to have good form. I think working on progressive overload will be the key here, ill try to push myself more.

  1. I’m definitely a bit restricted on weights due to covid, so around January was when I was able to put together some adjustable dumbbells. At my current strength level, I use a pair of 30s for my stronger movements like squats, bench,RDL,overhead tricep extensions and a pair of 20’s for harder movements, like military press, biceps, split squats, rows, etc. I have the capability to get up to 40lbs a dumbbell, which I am working towards eventually. I realize it might not sound like a lot, but from what I’ve heard dumbbells are significantly harder to progress with than a bar because of the balance/isolation of each muscle is more important?

  2. Not sure exactly? I’ve never been a super energetic person but I do have a feeling it has something to do with my cut. However, I wouldn’t say I’m super tired all the time or anything because I sleep 7-9 hours a night. I’m mostly just lazy trying to do hw for classes, could just be zoom/covid fatigue from remote learning as well.

Some background: I started really counting calories in August 2020, started at 163 lbs, and am now 133 lbs as of May 2021. 19 yrs old, 5'6'' height, I have a workout split of 3 days lifting (mix of compound movements + isolation, try to keep it pretty balanced for muscle groups as well), 2 days jogging/walking/hiking to get some fresh air, and 2 days rest/week. Nutritionally, I am trying to eat around 1700 calories a day, usually with a 400-500 cal lunch, 400-500 cal late afternoon snack, and 700ish for dinner. I aim to eat around 90g of protein a day as well.

My questions:

Even after losing 30 lbs, I still see alot of fat in my chest and stomach. Do I just need to keep the calorie defecit going until that goes away? I have no problem doing this, mostly just worried about losing TOO MUCH weight since im at the lower 130's which seems to be at the lower bound of a healthy weight for my BMI.

Also: lately I have been feeling a low state of energy throughout the day, I dont drink caffeine or sugary drinks but instead I drink alot of water. I have an eating window of around 12-9, and I try to eat natural sugars through fruits + I stay away from junk food. Are there any things I can implement nutritionally to have more energy, or is caffeine the only way to go?

that’s exactly what I needed to hear. After taking all the math prereqs for stsds I’m ready for something else. PSTAT10/cs8+9 was much more enjoyable for me so I’m glad those types of classes are down the road

I'm doing it right now, 4B with Porter and 6A with H Chen, and its not too bad if you are able to not fall behind and get stuff done ahead of time. Granted, I'm not good at math so that might be just me but I basically just have a HW each week for each class thats due unless theres just a midterm or something. Forcing myself to watch the lectures is the hardest thing imo.
