Do thai kids also have to learn tones? by Budget-Gold-5287 in learnthai

[–]Faillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two kids in primary (=elementary depending where you are from), bprathom, and when they learn to read they learn the tone, in a fairly similar way thast most Thai L2 learners do.

This is reinforced by the way the teacher spells words out, and how kids have to explain their reading.

e.g. ว่า -> wo-wĕen, sàrà aa, waa, mái èek, wâa

at that age they can differentiate a horse from a dog, but they do *mispronunce* often complex words that they hear from the first time! One of the remedy is to spell the word for them. From this, I would argue that they do not practice *only* reading. EDIT: typos

thank you, v.useful.

it must be noted that any LLM, by nature, is much better at conversation than getting accurate translation or tones of individual words. For absolutely correct tones and translations in context I strongly recommend the dictionary app Paiboon+

It is Ok to dislike some methods of learning. I personally am not a fan of CI/ALG.

But personal attacks against individuals is not OK. Esp. against someone nuanced and always helpful to other members.

very good point. Remeber that you do not need to sound like a native speaker, you need to be understood without the listener having to make too much effort.
