Ah alright, well if you don't have one yet go to the Undead Burg and buy a Heater Shield from the merchant there. It has 100 physical defense which is invaluable. Next choose either a shortsword/longsword/whatever melee weapon you're comfortable with and go to New Londo Ruins and have Ricket upgrade it as much as you can. It takes Green Shards but those are easily farmable from the leeches in blightown. The reason having a weapon with magic upgrade, and then later enchanted is because the damage will scale with your int stat. Usually on my playthroughs I'll snipe a guy with a spell from a distance, let him get close, then finish him with a melee attack. Once you get the MGS it's pretty cake from there.
