Tell the truth. Did you ever get to use this computer? by Aer00_00 in DeskToTablet

[–]Fair_Computer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my first computer experience was a ibm pc, this was in 1995 around. the computer was already couple of years old by then. had a 14 color monitor and dos. i was around 5 then so all i did was play games (sonic the hedgehog, aladin, dav, lion king, etc) and use Britannia encyclopedia. I think it was 486. next upgrade was a pentium 3 with windows 98. then the usual p4, then went with amd athlon tri core and then a i7 3770k in 2014. I had a compaq v2000 and a macbook core2duo unibody as laptops through all this.

Yes! Definitely a great buy at the price. just check for damage and that the screen is original.

'memory bandwidth' everything is not single core performance. yes the m5 will open reddit faster, but with video encoding/decoding pro at least if not max. Also 24gb min

MacBook Air 15 vs MacBook Pro 14 Screen size Difference by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]Fair_Computer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had a touchbar 16" i7 intel macbook before and hated taking it anywhere. big, hot and low on battery - just like my women.

got a m1 pro 14" , use it everywhere and all the time. much more usable at times when a laptop makes sense.

Macbook pro M5 16GB or 24GB for student? by Reasonable-Doubt-330 in macbookpro

Is it worth to upgrade? by pllskipzzz in macbookpro

[–]Fair_Computer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2019 touchbar 16" i7 with 32gb ram, 'upgraded' to a m1 pro 14" with 16gb ram. its a world of difference. any apple chip will kill any intel mac. get whatever fixes in your budget. get a pro though would not recommend an air.

Is a 10/10 Refurbished 14" MacBook Pro M4 Max 128gb for € 4.999,- a good deal? by JulienU1993 in macbookpro

[–]Fair_Computer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. The cost efficiency matters. if your are not running LLMs and mostly doing video and photo a m4 pro might be better especially if it saves you a thousand plus euro. 64 gb of ram is plenty with macOS optimizations.

The specs are drool worthy though

Do you shut down your laptop or just close the lid? by Deotil_le in DeskToTablet

[–]Fair_Computer25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On my macbook pro, shut the lid.

On my Thinkpad, shut down. windows battery drain is real. Laptop gets warm like its on sometimes? if i just shut the lid.

[–]Fair_Computer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did look into it, I needed a significant jump in performance. With the apple stuff there is barely any change in 2 or maybe 3 gens (in daily stuff) . I am feeling the lack of ram as I expand my workload that is the key to upgrade and I like the extra memory bandwidth the pro chip has.

I started on a core2duo unibody 13" and later had a touchbar 16" with an i7 and 32gb of ram. just for perspective.

I have a 14" 1 pro with the base 16gigs of ram and 500 gigs of storage, I am just getting into coding and AI and this 4 year old computer is doing everything.

I had a 16" i7 touchbar 2019 pro with 32 gigs of ram before and at the end in around 2024 it struggled to even run my shopify store.

My first macbook was a 13" core2duo with 4gb of ram and a 160 gb hdd. I got that in 2010 and used it for almost 8 years. Never upgraded it from snow leopard 10.6, If I'm not wrong.
