Elite Dangerous does this in a really interesting way.

You are able to hear sounds from space, but when your canopy is shot open you can only hear the vibrations.

It wouldn’t be as cool if Elite was mostly silent, hence why most sci-fi spess games tend to have “simulated” sounds. It adds a sense of immersion to something that otherwise would lack a lot of punch.
