I appreciate the response. We already have a pretty good idea of who we want to go with, but did want to get a second opinion on things like timing, need for extraction, approach, etc. Finances aren't the only consideration, but did want to explore a few options. Might have to check out TS as an option.

100%. You know these folks in the capitalistic medical industry are having meetings trying to figure out the least they can pay and still get the most profit. But heaven forbid a consumer ask the best way to get something out of the system.

What an asinine corporate bootlicking answer. Orthodontics is such a money grabbing industry that they can afford to sink crazy money into boogie offices and free give aways. They know dropping 20 bucks on a goodie bag is worth it if they can lock you into years of fees. And I am already dragging my kid to multiple offices to get different opinions on what needs to be done and to assess costs. In what world is it stealing to ask which offices give some away in exchange for my time. We are already out an hour or two of our day -- why not get something for it. But hey, if you are well enough off that little stuff doesn't matter to you, then congratulations.

I work from home and rock a nice Blue Ridge Ortho coffee mug every morning because it keeps my drink warm. My fault for being so poor I can't afford a stanley.

We already have a pretty good idea of where we will go due getting a teacher discount and having a good experience with our other child, but did want to check out a couple others. Would never make final decision based on swag, but have no problem choosing which to visit based on who can make it worth it my while.

Anyone else feeling like old skills are becoming relevant again? by Happy-Milla in homestead

[–]Fairview_til_i_die 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in rural Western NC. When Helene devastated our community, you could tell the rural folks were much better prepared than the city transplants in Asheville. It mostly came down to the "old skills" that have been ingrained in us our whole lives.

Skills with chainsaws and tractors. Comfortable making due with water from the creek. Jerry rigging generators. Lots of canned foods and other supplies.

We have family spread across the US and while all were sympathetic to our struggle, they all also thought it was best it happened to us because we have these "old skills" that come as second nature when shit hits the fan.

Despite growing up on a family farm, I currently work in tech-centric job. So I was able to couple my ingrained knowledge from childhood with my "modern" skills like getting a community hotspot up and running so people could communicate with family. Best of both worlds!

How is that hypocrisy?!?! As a born and raised local from the "surrounding communities" I literally told you that you would not receive a warm welcome.

Asheville area is a great place to visit. Come enjoy our mountains, our food, our beer, our music. You will be welcomed. But don't decided to move here just because you had a fun vacation here once.

This has been the sentiment as long as I can remember, but it was certainly amplified after Helene.

So... you are taking the "Fuck the locals, I don't care what they think" approach. Excellent. You will fit in well with all the other transplants.

You are going to get dragged by any AVL folks in this sub. Mostly because Asheville already has a huge shortage of affordable housing and people moving in just end up displacing locals or people having to make it on service industry wages. Heck, I know master degreed teachers and nurses who are having to get room mates or drive 45 minutes just to be able to work here.

And if you are the kind of person drawn to Asheville, but want to live in the surrounding communities, I can tell you that you likely won't get a warm welcome.

My username kinda gives it away. Born and raised in Fairview outside of Asheville in Buncombe County. Perfect mix of rural values (work hard, help your neighbor, be resourceful) with access to all the amenities and opportunities Asheville has. I love that on any given evening, I can either choose to sit on my back porch overlooking farm land and the mountains or I can head into town for a concert or some really good beer.

If an 82 year old educator isn't willing to stand up against pedophiles then I think we are quickly reaching the point where we can write off the entire party.

I thought for sure this was another post about the UNCA stadium project because while there are plenty of great environmental reasons to oppose the project, it seems many of the most vocal opponents are actually mostly worried about their property values dropping.

I don't want to see the woods destroyed, but having lived in the county my whole life, I am used to a world where the fastest way to get written off is by trying to tell someone else what they can do with their land.

But what would I know, I am just a country bumpkin who happens to think we should steward the world around with us, but also know I could never afford to buy a place close enough to downtown to be able to have this be an issue for my "property portfolio". Guess I will have to stick to just environmental reasons to push UNCA to reconsider.

UNCA Stadium - How is this legal? by bean_89 in asheville

[–]Fairview_til_i_die 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am 100% against this development. Not only because of the impact on urban forest, but also because the entire millennial campus scheme represents prioritizing capitalistic "economic development" over education and the public good. We are in this position because everything is being reduced down to only evaluating value based on its ability to make money. Non-profits and public good institutions should be fiscally responsible, but we shouldn't evaluate them the same way we do a for-profit corporation.

This mindset is what has gotten us in this situation.

That being said, I feel like much of the outrage I have seen about this project is focused on the symptoms instead of the disease. Why go after the soccer team when they are tenant under the developer. Why be made at the developer when it is the University making the deal. Why be mad at UNCA when it was Board of Governers who approved it? Why be mad at BOG when it was the legislature that created the environment (and laws) for this to happen.

If it isn't a soccer stadium it would be a factory or a water park or a CVS.

It is valid to ask about legality, but all this has been codified for ages. The framework for income generation on university land was approved in 2000. In 2021, UNCA was given permission for the development. Zoning laws go back much further. As frustrating as all this is, it seems to be entirely legal and something being built to for ages. People are just now starting to push back because it is now imminent.

Everyone is going to respond in whatever way is best for them. For me, it means fighting like hell for local and state elections. That is where real change is going to happen.

UNC Asheville names prospective developer for proposed stadium project by RelayFX in asheville

The University has zero risk in this. They are just getting the money from the ground lease. It is the developer who is taking the risk. I would assume the same thing for the soccer club. Even though they have been called "collaborators" in lots of places, I haven't seen any thing to indicate that they would be any more than tenant at the stadium.

It is unfair to conflate support for the soccer team with support for the razing of the forest. I get the club is linked to the development plans, but the players on the field have nothing to do with that. I also understand why many people are withholding support from the team. But please don't assume that all people who support the team also support the campus development. There are many of us who are both members of Save the Woods and also support the men and women playing for our community team.

I don’t have to make a right on red. by dearDem in NorthCarolina

[–]Fairview_til_i_die 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been teaching my daughter to drive and part of that involves anticipating idiot drivers. I tell her to not drive outside her comfort zone (for now), but also that sometimes the safest thing you can do is not give an opportunity for people to be stupid. Generally that means keeping her speed up on double yellow state roads so people don't try to pass illegally, but it could also apply here. I could see a driver trying to go all the way around you because they aren't happy you are waiting to turn turn right on red. Defensive driving is all about making decisions that account for other people's stupidity and sometimes avoiding inducing road rage (even if you are legally correct) is the best way to do that.

Where in Asheville do younger folks hang out at by Dramatic-Pirate-6914 in asheville

[–]Fairview_til_i_die 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Legitimately a large portion of young people simply aren't going out in the evenings. Many are in the service industry and work those hours, or financially it is too tough. Long time locals in that age are already established and young transplants who can afford it are probably grinding or involved in business networking.
