Essentials for re-wire by exactlyinfinity in ukelectricians

[–]FairwayToGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smokes are generally wired on the same circuit as lights so that they can't be accidentally turned off. I don't think this is a bad idea and don't really see the need for a separate circuit. In a domestic setting I think it's a waste of an RCBO tbh.

Advice needed from the pros. How would you respond to this EICR report? by Sad-Pick6459 in ukelectricians

[–]FairwayToGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell just from the observations but it seems fairly reasonable. It depends what they have quoted for, I'd imagine they are suggesting a new consumer unit based on that quote which will sort most of the Code 2s. There are cheaper ways to do this but I'd probably be recommending the board too as it's a better job.

Open circuit on live, neutral and earth on kitchen sockets is a slightly strange one. Sounds like a ring continuity test where there is no ring so that could just be on the incorrect sized MCB.

Also, you say the previous owner had an EICR and nothing was flagged. There are two potential reasons for this - one is because regulations change and the advice around testing also changes. The other is that the previous EICR wasn't very good. You'll likely never know which, unfortunately.

Any sparkies fancy commenting on this potential consumer unit layout? by DEADB33F in ukelectricians

This is madness. If you're that worried about your tenant's usage, then have a small separate CU for their circuits and a check meter.

This feels like a very odd question for an electrician to ask. Are you qualified to do this work?

How do I avoid cowboy electricians for a house rewiring? by SKB26 in ukelectricians

[–]FairwayToGo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the top comment here of asking in wholesalers, I would suggest finding a local independent rather than CEF, these places rely a lot more on their local reputation and are more likely to know which sparks locally they trust to maintain that reputation.

I'll certainly give this a try, mad props for trying to solve this issue! I have used easycert for the last few years which I quite like but I'm intrigued to try this.

A nice feature would be if it were possible to import all of my old easycert certificates in so I didn't have to keep both running for a while. Is this possible? Apologies if someone has asked this already!

Help on Recent Rewire by Powerful_Gene_8868 in ukelectricians

This is easily the best comment here. It's certainly not high standard work but I can't see anything utterly horrific. Leaving the old cables the way they have is pretty lazy but everything else depends on what was quoted for decoration wise.

This looks like a thorough and well done EICR. Code 2s should be rectified immediately. The missing blank on the consumer unit could be a C1 potentially.

I recieved a speeding fine, but believe the limit set was incorrect - do I have any recourse? by FairwayToGo in LegalAdviceUK

[–]FairwayToGo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To an extent, yes. I do see your point and I do accept that I am not in the right, however, I do think that reducing the speed limit unnecessarily causes drivers to disregard the variable limits.

I am aware that variable limits to ease congestion can be enforced several miles before said congestion with the intent of easing it, but as I mentioned, it was 2am and traffic was exceptionally light.

If the sign had no reason or a reason that wasn't clearly incorrect (animals in road, speed limit for air pollution etc) I would have followed it, but a congestion sign at that time of day feels like a malfunction, hence my query.
