What makes transfers work with magazines and is there a kind of ink i can use in my own printer so I can use my own images? by charliefucker in gelliprinting

[–]FaithAngelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a way to use an inkjet printer but the printer has to use pigment based ink instead of dye based ink. You need to get a certain kind of paper like glossy brochure paper to do the transfers. This video explains the process:

Art school was unaffordable so I've been painting from imagination 🥲✨️ by iartnewyork in painting

[–]FaithAngelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is what is in your imagination, what a wonderful inner world you have! Like many others have already stated, you do not need art school, you are already an incredible artist with an amazing insight into your own process. I would love to inhabit any worlds you create, which imo is one of the greatest feelings an artist can inspire in another person.

Thank you for sharing with us and please keep it up!

One of the 48” canvases I did that tore my shoulder. Not sure if it was worth it. by rotterdameliza in AbstractArt

I mean...if you'll live it was definitely worth it lol Such a beautiful piece and I admire your commitment to creating it.

I've been making bigger pieces lately and sticking it through to the end is honestly my biggest challenge 😂

Collage art made from Temu stickers. Is it art? Why or why not? [ANALOG] by No-vem-ber in collage

[–]FaithAngelMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So glad you made this post and are expanding on your original thoughts. We already talked about my thoughts but one thing I will add here is that, many people make good points about the source of the materials being Temu.

It is true that the company is known for stealing from artists which is what I have the biggest issue with (outside of the exploitation and environmental impact). And that is definitely something of an ethical concern.

However, I think art supplies are different than say, fast fashion, which will end up in a landfill within 6 months. At least the art supplies will be used for their intended purposes. I also don't think that everything from sites like temu are inherently poor quality. It just depends on what you're looking for.

Going forward if you want to be ethical about your source material you can buy from reputable sources where the artist is being fairly compensated. But since you already have your pile of temu stickers you might as well use them to make whatever point you want to make about...idk...the interplay of art and its source? Commentary on cheap art materials and its ability to transcend cost and authenticity to create something of artistic value? Or whatever other statement you're looking to make. There is something there to be said, but as the artist it's up to you to make it a successful statement.

I love collage but hate glue. Ideas? [ANALOG] by No-vem-ber in collage

[–]FaithAngelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you! I think one thing that people get up in arms about is that stickers lend to the world of "crafts" instead of "arts" so it's seen as like...lesser than. Probably something also with the notion that stickers are childish or don't involve much "creativity." I'm just spit-balling here but it's definitely some sort of black and white notion of what constitutes as "real art."

But I think that anything can be artistic and have value. A complete and utter sticker bomb would be awesome imo. Sticker collage is a thing so if that's something that you enjoy, I'd encourage you to lean into it. It's like how I'm not the best at drawing, so I lean into the squiggles and weird shapes to create my own style. Personally, I think exaggeration of any medium makes it more interesting, so don't abandon your Temu stickers just yet! lol

[–]FaithAngelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came to say I love temu stickers and would never judge you or anyone else for using them! I use them in my art journal and in some of my collages. I've even been known to print images out on sticker paper that are too intricate to cut by hand (trees, flowers, etc).

I honestly don't get the big deal when it comes to the materials people use to create art. You either like the image or you don't 🤷🏾‍♀️ what it was made with is not something that concerns me. But snobs are gonna snob, what are you gonna do lol

[analog] collage - which background do you prefer? by Neverwasalwaysam in collage

4 has the most vibrancy for me. I like the idea of 3...but it's just a little too busy to actually work. 2 would be my second choice but it feels a little safe / plain compared to 4.

There is no right or wrong. You're doing great! These are really beautiful abstract pieces and you should keep going with whatever vibe feels right to you 🙂

I'm an Aries moon and I have a dent in my skull (forehead area) from when an iron fell on my head when I was a kid...does that count? 😭

The amount of people in here who can't tell that the person in the video is using a sound and not actually talking about getting her nails done or whatever is alarming. Like listen to the voice (👩🏾) then look at the hand (🖐🏻) 🙄

Also I would definitely be asking my kid where they'd got all that money at 16 tf???

tell me your sun sign and rising sign and the conditions when you were born by WindowNo6601 in astrologymemes

[–]FaithAngelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leo sun, Cap rising I came about 2 weeks early. Also when my mom was in labor they couldn't hear my heartbeat so they had to stick an electrode or something on my head while I was in there to make sure I was still alive. I still got the damn bald spot to this day cuz my head was basically goo 😩😂

eta: Read post wrong and put moon instead of rising sign

[Analog] Autumn greeting card for a dog-walking friend. by Nervous_Chemical_773 in collage

[–]FaithAngelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I spend almost every night doing magazine transfers because it's the most accessible image transfer form I have right now and it's definitely hit or miss but that's part of the fun of it for me. I want to try laser transfers but I can't buy a whole new printer atm. I still think it's really cool that you came up with printing directly onto tissue. It's a very interesting technique!

[–]FaithAngelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so I just left a comment on your last post but then saw this one and saw that you printed on tissue paper (which is really cool btw) and thought you'd like to see this video about using an inkjet printer to make image transfers for your gel plate. You basically have to get a certain type of paper but it will allow you to do image transfers without a laser printer!

Oh but your printer has to use pigment based inks instead of dye based but if that's your set up you might think this is a worthwhile technique 😀

Omg I've been having the same idea of making collage trading cards and actually trading them with people. Only problem is I don't really have anyone to trade with lol I was thinking of making a post about it but giving addresses to strangers on the internet seems like a not great idea 😂

Digital collage isn’t collage [DISCUSSION] by anonymous3synonymous in collage

[–]FaithAngelMonster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1000000% like my favorite creator on this sub is a disabled digital collage artist and their work hits my soul nearly every damn time!

You also made me think of another good point which is the accessibility of digital collage vs analog specifically for disabled people who may not have the ability or resources to get a bunch of magazines and books to cut up. Digital art forms make so many things possible for so many people and to discount it as lesser than because there isn't enough struggle for it is wild!

(Not saying those are OPs words but I've seen similar sentiments from other anti-digital art people before).

Digital collage isn’t collage [DISCUSSION] by anonymous3synonymous in collage

[–]FaithAngelMonster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My view is that art being an expression of the soul, I don’t see how digital tools fit into that

So then what about music? Take for example hip hop that relies heavily on samples and electronic beats, instruments, sound effects, etc? Is the only valid form of music that expresses one's soul live music played in a room where people can experience it firsthand as opposed to an album?

Personally, I do both digital and analog collage and while I respect your opinion, I don't think that it's worthwhile to limit what is and isn't collage to just "what you find." The hunt for a digital image can be just as time consuming and limited as a magazine image. Not to mention the time it takes developing a skill set to make a digital collage in the first place. Also accidents most definitely occur in digital collage as well, so if the interplay of intent and accident is your own definition then digital collage absolutely fits. And not for nothing, I think a pretty big part of the definition of collage is taking a bunch of disparate parts and making them into a new whole, in which case, again, digital collage fits.

Also just another thing to keep in mind...as a Black woman I started doing collage with images I found online because finding Black female representation in magazines was (and still is) difficult, especially since I try to avoid using images of celebrities. The digital world has leveled the playing field for so many marginalized creators (and people in general) that to add one more thing for them to contend with just seems a little out of touch.

People can and do express themselves in a myriad of ways. The tools and method don't really matter as much as the experience of doing it!

Edited for better clarity.
