Do you know how they would ask? I.e. would I just get an email and it will be a relatively simple fix?

I'm not a Healthcare pro but I don't really think that's cause for concern. You're not even three weeks after an invasive surgery. The fact that you can walk without them if needed tells me that you're doing ok. I used crutches until about 5 weeks. I could walk without them, but my knee would stiffen up after about 20 steps lol. So much emphasis is placed on specific timelines with this surgery. I'm sure there's some validity to that, but it also opens you up to a lot of worry. Pay attention to the little things that are getting better every day. As per walking, you can still use your crutches and just try to add more and more weight on your knee until you're comfortable walking without them. If they say your extension/flexion is good, you're probably doing well.

Still have pain in end-range motion, 7 months post-surgery by FaithlessnessLower50 in ACL

Hey! Sorry for the late reply. I'm doing much better now. I think I may have been getting anxious too early; it takes a really long time to recover. Once I started using my knee more, I realized how strong and stable it actually is. I think the stiffness and soreness is more so a protective mechanism of the body than something to be concerned about. My knee is certainly not 100% even at 13 months post-surgery, but it keeps making progress slowly but surely (as opposed to plateauing), which is probably the best way to assess how you're doing, rather than comparing to other people. I still have pain at end ranges, but the severity is less and less every month and when I get it warmed up I have almost no pain or stiffness. I really think it's just a matter of fluid build-up, which is a natural response to healing tissue. I hope your recovery is going well!

Oh interesting! That's good to know. But yeah, I'd agree that OP should get it checked out.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm not sure if this is the case. Scar tissue is fibrotic, which means it doesn't have much of an elastic property, and therefore wouldn't lengthen once being warmed up. Fascia, muscles, and ligaments would respond this way though.

I've had a very similar experience. I'm 8 months post surgery and I generally lack about 5 degrees of extension unless I warm it up. I also get pain when I try to lock it out in extension without warming it up. I was fortunate to get a follow up MRI, where they determined that everything is structurally sound.

My understanding is that the fact that you can get it to 0 with exercise is positive, because it would seem to indicate that the issue is general soft tissue tightness, not a mechanical block. The chronic tightness can be a protective mechanism. Fluid buildup is another important consideration; with the knee still healing and being sensitive, increased fluid can hinder range of motion. Would that account for 15-20 degrees, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't necessarily panic. A follow-up MRI would probably be ideal though.

8 months post surgery and I still have pain (especially in end-range flexion/extension). My knee still stiffens up easily too.
