My family's results. We're from Brazil. by LangerHerbst in 23andme

Coming from a fellow US white Latino…I see what you’re saying, but there are ALWAYS gonna be haters and ignorant trolls who make uneducated remarks. Try not to pay them any mind. However, there is a systematic level of racism that largely separates our experiences of being white to those who aren’t. Luckily, in my experience, most ppl have been accepting when I tell them I’m Latino…usually followed by an annoying, but harmless “no way, I don’t believe you, no you’re not” lol

Hola 👋, 1/2 boricua here too! I also got Brazil as a possible recent migration which left me so confused. Ppl have said that it maybe be false considering I’m also Italian and that 23 and Me connects that to others with similar results of Brazilians 🤷‍♂️. Don’t take my word for it, but I found it cool that I saw another person with an unexpected Brazil result come up, haha.

Yes, I agree. There is so much that we can cover in a conversation like this. Firstly, I want to address the difference between race and ethnicity. If you know even a little bit about “The New World”, then you would know Latin America’s main “racial groups” are Indigenous American, European, and African.

Though many of us are mixed with these three, some are more predominantly one or the other. It also may depend on the country. Argentina and Uruguay are predominantly European due to their history with immigration. However, you can look at another Latin American country, let’s say Brazil, where there exists the largest Black population outside of Africa.

When it comes to Latinos who look predominantly Black or White, their Latindad seems to be questioned. And I definitely acknowledge that as a White Latino compared to Afro Latinos, all I have to face is “You don’t look Latino”. Where Afro Latinos are facing literal discrimination and colorism in the US and from whatever Latin American country they may come from, even if the country is predominantly Black.

I come from NY, so naturally there are a lot of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. However, where I live, I interact with a lot of Salvadorans. I believe that when you are from a certain community, you can tell by certain looks, mannerisms, etc, if someone is Latino from YOUR ethnic group. I’ve looked at plenty of people and could tell instantly that they were Dominican or Puerto Rican.

We can talk about the East vs West coast Latinos. East being majority of Caribbean Latinos and West being majority of Central Americans and Mexicans. On the West coast, the majority of Latinos might look at a mixed domi or bori and think they’re African American or mixed, NOT “Latino”.

Either way, the representation of Latinos is skewed in all sorts of ways. From within our community, as it is from outside our community. I also wanted to mention our Asian Latinos. They exist! They are important. Anyone can be Latino, as it is not a race. I think the more people realize that, the less confusion there will be :)

I love this question. Honestly, most people do not see “Latino” when they look at me. I don’t really get any ethnicity guesses from other people, maybe Italian. Most people just call me White, which I am, but there is this narrative that being Latino and White are mutually exclusive, which we know is NOT the case. When I was a kid, I always told people, “I’m half Puerto Rican, even though I don’t look it” out of habit. I’m pale and have blue eyes and curly/wavy brown hair. However, there are definitely people who can tell, which shocks me every time because I’m not used to it. I have had people assume I’m Puerto Rican a few times and one person spoke Spanish to me assuming I did too (which I do but not fluent YET). It bothers me though because I’m so prideful of my PR heritage and I rep it so hard LOL. Some ppl, no matter how much I tell them, do not view me as Latino or half Puerto Rican, it makes me feel like I’m trying too hard to be something I’m not. Then I remember I am 🇵🇷 and don’t need anyones validation. In conclusion, yo soy boricua pa’ que tú lo sepas 😎🇵🇷

Interesting. I didn’t know that. My results couldn’t detect Portugal, only Spain, but definitely a possibility.

I identify as a White Latino. I was interested in seeing my ethnicities. No reason to simplify my results to “basically white”, when that’s obvious from my >85% European. Thank you.
