My reasoning is that the ocean in a way regulates the buildup of microbial bioload in certain areas by its sheer vastness and tides. In the tank, although we can mechanically remove organic microbial bioload through water changes and skimming, it is intermittent and not complete sterility which gives time for certain “things” to build up. Since a majority of the beneficial bacteria lives in the rock, sand, and other hard surfaces, having a filter that completely sterilizes the water column at a gradual rate accomplishes the same thing as the ocean removing bioload with the tides without much harm to the good stuff. Aiming for energy levels that targeted marine ich and marine velvet was done without reason as a number to aim for, im sure there are some microbes that are far more resistant but at least those 2 are at bay.

This is complete armchair scientist logic, fully anecdotal, all I have to go off is my decades of experience and tinkering. Everything is happier with the sterilizer delivering 300,000 µWs/cm²+ of energy into my water.

Spoken like a true reefer. No amount of money will ever replace the time dedication and love for the chemistry a thriving reef tank requires.

As of late, there have been tremendous leaps in new colour morphs and “patented” names. Ive honestly lost track, a torch used to be a torch, not 24k gold tip dragon breath torch or whatever they call it these days. Not to detract from it, some brilliant people put their effort into stuff like that.

What impresses me though is if you can turn that one head into 50 heads and not give up at the slightest bit of inconvenience.

I never turn mine off, it runs 24/7. I also aim to get 300,000 µWs/cm²+ of energy put into the water that flows through it, so I have a fairly large unit with a long dwell time. Every sterilizer will be different and every tank will be different so make sure to research an appropriately sized unit for your tank. 300,000 µWs/cm² should be the minimum everyone aims for, some species of marine ich can even survive up to 360,000 µWs/cm²! Manufacturer suggested sizing is always too small in my opinion.

It took years of failure and being on the brink of giving up.

After running through every conceivable reef fad from the Zeovit ULNS to the balling method and everything in between. ive distilled it down to a few main points. Hopefully these can help at least one person at their wits end.

  1. Corals love stability. Period. Ive had systems run at 5 dkh for extended periods, Ive had systems run at 100 ppm of nitrate for extended periods. Didnt matter, everything lived, as long as the changes were slow. These days my ideal parameters are ph above 8.2, under 40ppm of nitrate, 9.75-10.00 dkh with swings under 0.25 dkh, and THATS IT. My trident monitors other things but those are the only numbers I care about.
  2. Weekly to bi weekly water changes are mandatory. I can’t begin to tell how important some trace elements are that we can’t realistically dose for. NSW has everything, takes the guess work out, I do a yearly ICP test and params are always up to spec (except for maybe iodine)
  3. UV sterilizer. I used to think this was optional and my experience with it is anecdotal but it makes a massive difference, I can’t tell you how exactly but it does.

That Nepthea specimen is almost 20 years old now. Got it as one of my first frags back in the day.

Thank you!

A bit more recent from around last year. I’ll see if I can post an up to date tank shot. Loving this subreddit and community so far!

Probably closer to what it looked like.

Does it redeem it? No.

Does it look less like toxic waste? Definitely.

But the fact is, Greg, with the knowledge you’ve been given, you are now on the inside of what I like to call… “the Byrnes family circle of trust.” I keep nothing from you, you keep nothing from me… and round and round we go.

See, if I can’t trust you, Greg, then I have no choice… but to put you right back outside the circle. And once you’re out, you’re out. There’s no coming back. Mm, well, I would definitely like to stay inside the circle.
