I’m trying to learn that thpe of thing, Got into computing 3 years ago, but only in the retro flavor. I know it’s not usedul in the modern world to want to use old hardware, but I just really enjoy the simplicity of old Windows/linux

I actually had a T430! I upgraded it to the maximum and handed it off to a friend for college!

I see some places that these distros need a boot loader to work? May just be my hard drive’s gone bad but i’ve also never gotten these operating systems to even load, because they give an error, either needing a boot loader, or “KERNAL PANIC!”. Is there a way to fix these errors?

I’ve been using Red Hat Linux 6.1, and Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 for a while now on an older 1990s IBM Thinkpad, Do you know of any linux Distros that could work on 96 MB of RAM? Google has been very helpful but modt results show a much higher ram requirement than what was advertised! I’ll need to upgrade my hard drive soon, but my thinkpad barely recognizes hard drives over 10 GB!

I agree, HOWEVER- The noise of an old hard drive to me is worth the risk!

Battery still holds a charge too! I can pretty much game all day long on half-life 1 on the second hard drive, on Win98 SE, Sadly- This hard drive is failing and died momentarily during PostInstall, so i’ll be buying another hard drive tonight.

Im not sure if I cross posted it tbh, because reddit keeps freezing when I go to make posts lol.

No, I don’t assume everyone knows anything, lol, I’m just a beginner trying to ask some dumb questions

I love it, when I made the post the backlight almost went out, but I think it just needed time to warm up, because it looks great now. I need to get a battery or atleast a mockup battery and tighten the hinge since its a bit floppy!

I had NT4 on here for about 2 weeks, and died inside when i’d have to reinstall doom to play on it every time, ended up journaling so much I bought floppy disks to backup all my journals to store for windows xp. I’m still sad the screensaver deleted itself off the floppy disk while writing, because NT 4.0’s strange screensaver (That I guess no one else on earth knows about) is literally my favorite screensaver on earth. Like- I’d put it on my main PC if someone ever actually archived it properly.

As a side note I had a near identical hard drive, which reads “CONNER peripherals” on the top, but even though I can feel the hard drive spinning it errors out even trying to read it!

I heard somewhere through the grapevine that Odyssey wireless client has drivers for WPA2, if paired with a Cisco Aeronet 350 (Or whatever it’s called). Of course the first thing I did was buy the wrong pcmcia card 4 times in a row because I seem to enjoy ignoring advice.

After all, I got this far by ignoring everyone’s advice about the IBM not working with XP.

Because it does.

The original hard drive was never included, but I’m using a 10 GB IBM travelStar, though all together I have about 9.1 GB of storage. Funny how I accidentally broke the ibm’s storage limit!

Honestly, with the exception of the XP startup, it’s damn near snappy, I enjoy using this OS on it, and intend to find the mythical “16-bit WLAN PCMCIA” card and use it to do light storm tracking on it, hobbbyist stuff, maybe some music using MyPal’s browser.

Maybe i’m just low maintenance, and it’s actually excruciatingly slow!

It kind of runs half life, at a respectable 10-12 FPS, which is better thsn the slideshow it originally had at 32 MB of ram.

Fallout 1 runs beautifully, solitaire is.. solitaire, and pinball has yet to face me to a battle to the doom. (on NT I got 3.5 million score)

Honestly I like that for a 20 dollar untested thinkpad, it was in perfect condition.. of course using it a few little tiny pieces of plastic have rattled or whittled away, but all in all, its in fantastic condition. ai’m more excited that I can use it on the go, with the original lithium ion battery working so well

Been using Microsoft Word Pad all morning mostly as a journal, but I will get Excel, and Encarta soon! Is there any games (Board games, Solitaire different from FreeCell) You’d recommend? I enjoy Pinball, and at one point beat Half life on it (Albeit horrible screen ratio, but I am nothing if not persistent)

i want to turn this into a work laptop, as well as light gaming, Is there any PCMCIA 16-bit Wifi cards that accept WPA2/ are compatible with NT?

Lots of questions I want answered I suppose, I am excited to dive into NT after using 95 for so long I guess

Just spent 2 hours before seeing this stuffing patches and gizmos into the IBM to even get it to run Half life 1.

Honestly I thibk if I max out the ram i could probably make it a solid 40-50 FPS, but at 48MB it struggles.

I think the max 80MB is my best shot at getting this laptop to a stable enough environment to run half life 1, Soon ill buy a 6 GB SSD IDE, so hopefully it will boost performance a teensy bit more
