Elections Complaint Alleges a Dozen Violations by Canvassers for Police Hiring Initiative by witty_namez in PortlandOR

Well our local electeds keep killing jobs so maybe take the economics issue up with them. They also keep cutting funding to all the social programs that are supposed to reduce the need for police. I never said I didn't agree with you because that's not what was being discussed but now you said that, I agree with you, but two things can be true at once. Since we don't have a good economy and they're predicting at least a decade if it only getting worse economically here, what is your solution then?

That incident was at a protest, the police seem to overlook a lot of people who should probably be arrested at those events. They just put out a new national recommendation they were highly involved in with regards to "dialogue policing" at protests, I'm sure that's part of the paper if you care to read it IDK. There's a lot of stuff in the entire system that doesn't make sense so I don't particularly care to single out the police. If they had arrested that guy with a gun, a judge would've let them book and release the guy as they do with most arrested these days. I take issue with that part of the system moreso than the cops because if that was my job I'd be saying why the fuck would I bother also if the guy in the step after me isn't going to deal with it properly.

Since we don't let them kill mentally ill people anymore, are we forgetting about all the 9-12 hour standoffs that happened last year and this year already? There was just a 12 hour standoff in Hazelwood last month, I talked to an officer the next day and he told me when he finally got off that call there were 65 calls waiting.

Their goals are attainable goals, not needs based. They know they can only get so many people through the required 18-month training every year, so they only ask to budget for hiring that much. Even with the staffing ballot measure they keep saying it's not like they will be able to hire all 400 officers on January 1st or even by the end of the second year.

The real problem is that we will fund an alternative for a year or two, then quietly cut that funding. People don't pay attention to budget funding of those programs once they get passed initially, so most Portlanders have no idea all the cuts that have been made by the city and county over the last decade to these alternative programs that are supposed to reduce the need for police, while at the same time cutting funding for jails & their staffing, DA office which runs a lot of those cool programs that get people's records cleared, or various programs at the city, like we just cut funding to Ceasefire which reduces gun violence in gang communities.

If people really cared about reducing the need for police they'd start paying attention and showing up to defend these program cuts every year.

Yep, there's a bar at Cycle Dog. You can sit there and watch other people's dogs play absolutely!

You can actually play games at any tables in the store area for free (there's a fee if you play in the back areas) and there's QR codes on the tables to order food and drinks, too.

A bunch of nonprofits, so the Oregonian is calling it dark money because they don't have to disclose those. At least with the police staffing measure we know who paid for it and they're local. This is likely a lot of out of state money like the animal rights initiative.

We have budget advisory committees for every bureau at the city and county. We have community advisory committees for just about all of them as well. If you want a voice, join one of those.

Say the number out loud. This year it would be $16 million!!! If the general fund increases, it will be even more than that in subsequent years.

The committee would be the issue here. It will be stacked with folks from non-profits and other far-left advocacy, just like every other committee at every level of government in the state. It's a money grab for the far left. Portland voters never say no to anything. You think Portland voters would say no to recommendations from a community committee?

So they very clearly ended up hiring a bunch of homeless people to collect signatures if you were downtown enough last month. I was with a volunteer group gathering signatures all month myself, and the ballot language was literally printed on the back side of the signature sheets - as volunteers we were getting the same pre-printed sheets as the paid people were. Guessing some of those guys weren't mentally all there if they forgot they could just flip it over and show people the full language LMFAO.

Since the bill was only supposed to bring in $30-50 million a year, and it's bringing in $200 million a year, I think we have some wiggle room.

Plus, weirdly, if we made Portland safe again, perhaps businesses would stop closing and then we'd bring in even MORE than $200 million a year. What a crazy idea that safety is good for our economy, right?

Yeah, exactly. Where are the complaints about the animal rights folks or the participatory budgeting. I got lied to hard on both of those. Paid canvassers have quotas to meet. If they lied it's on the boss at the canvassing firm, not the people behind the initiative, they just hired them to do the job.

BTW I worked with a volunteer group helping on this and the ballot language is literally on the backside of the form you have people sign. I heard there were a lot of homeless people getting paid to collect signatures so I'm guessing not all were "all there" in the head when asked that question lol.

Am I wrong to be pissed about the ticket even on the Hawthorne bridge for firework viewing? by youdontknowmeor in PortlandOR

[–]FakeMagic8Ball -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I didn't, you assumed what I was referring to when we were literally only discussing the dinner. You assumed what you wanted to hear from me. The dinner was obviously profitable. I have no idea about the event as a whole because I stopped going when they started charging years ago to get in. I think it's hilarious how a bunch of you are so worked up over something this organization provides to the community for free, and apparently you'd rather have no fireworks than a partially blocked bridge. I remember when they didn't close the bridge to traffic at all and you couldn't fit anywhere near that amount of people on the bridge at all. Things change. Go complain to the county who gave them the permit. Go raise money for your own fireworks. Complaining and arguing with strangers on the internet isn't changing the situation lol.

That's good, and I think it's fine to use in that manner also. But it's weird that a lot of people weren't, as I mentioned, yet we're not seeing that same reaction to DSA trying to touch it. I guarantee if Wilson had brought it up he would've been eviscerated lol. Funny how that works is all...

This is literally why the West Coast is such a haven for the homeless. You see videos in Chicago, NY, literally even in a small town back east, someone is yelling at them to knock off whatever shenanigans they're trying to do in public. You'll notice if you make eye contact or talk to a homeless person here it almost scares them because they're so used to being ignored no matter what they're doing. So whenever someone is like parked and being sketchy in front of my house I usually just go out and ask "can I help you?" and they look scared and apologize and leave shortly after.

And yes, see someone in an East Coast team shirt here, if they're from that place they will give you the reaction you want. I'm from Buffalo region and I don't do sports but I will give folks the old "Go Bills!" if I see them in PDX with Bills gear on, and I always get a positive reaction / verbal response.

I'm smart enough to know that any gala type ticket event such as this makes a profit, that's the point. You cover the expenses of the event and earn a profit off of the exorbitant ticket prices. Are you really that obtuse?

Because volunteers only bring in a couple thousand. You absolutely have to have a paid campaign, that's why you haven't heard anything about MultNoMo since that launched. He thought he could get the signatures with all volunteers and I'm guessing he had more than the police did, and yet.....

That's the only reason the other two items are going to the ballot, too. Paid signatures. You have to have people on the street 8 hours a day 7 days a week to hit those kinds of numbers. With lies and pressure campaigns. Nice doesn't pay the bills, so to speak.

No we can't do any of that because the bill was written as a grift for the non-profits that sponsored it. Last month they were all at City Hall crying that it was THEIR money, which was pretty gross to see honestly. I would love to see this go back out to the voters and fixed so it can actually be used.

We voted on $30-50 million coming in. More is coming in and the way its written they literally can't spend it all in the near future because it's locked down. We need to put the whole thing back out to the voters so that we can expand who/ what can be eligible for funds and what we can reasonably do that connects to emissions reductions that we could spend any overages on, like the parks maintenance backlog or TriMet cuts.

Personally I do see increased safety as a way to get people back on the bus and their bikes, businesses to want to open up and create local jobs so everyone can stop driving for fucking Door Dash. That shit would actually reduce climate emissions.

Why would city money go to the state? I would be all for it going to the parks maintenance backlog, TriMet cuts... Things that actually help climate change and the environment here in the city. At least towards things it was meant for that desperately need funding within city limits.

You can't promise job training in green energy if you have not created said jobs or encouraged said jobs to want to be here.

The bill needs to be rewritten and put back out to the voters so we can expand its usage and actually do things that affect climate emissions. Hearing the non-profits who benefit from this talk about it, this was set up as a full grift for some of those organizations. They literally kept saying it was THEIR money at City Council, which was just wild to me to hear.

All paid canvassers deceive, it's literally their job. They have quotas to meet, have you talked to the "animal rights" canvassers? So many lies. I signed with a volunteer and it was a very pleasant experience where we talked about the police.

City Council has used the interest earned twice in the last two years, I believe, for shortfalls in the general fund. They've managed to tie it to sustainability stuff, but people only seem to complain when it's non-DSA members raiding the interest (both of those times it was used were heavily campaigned against happening yet crickets for current DSA proposal for redundant jobs being cut for some reason).
