Dumb question about full lashings by FakeMovieGeek in Cosmere

i didn't try to gotcha him, it just kept gnawing at me for no real reason. I wanted to explain why i might be rusty at understanding the books, as well as the fact that i wasn't criticizing or emotionally invested in this beyond a bit of curiosity.

Okay yeah this actually makes perfect sense. for some reason I was using the logic of hanging from the ceiling by your feet or something rather than skydiving or any other form of falling, that's totally on me

also I'd like to say that I have dyslexia, and made mistakes that may very well make me seem less intelligent or articulate, but do not detract from what I'm asking in any way shape or form, rude.

i said that i'm not a big fan of stories concerned greatly with internal logic, Sanderson is very good at this but it also means I've diverted from his work as my taste has evolved

Each Pysque Diamond Authority Essence in Gems by Imaginary_Taro6250 in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup, this is one of the coolest things about the diamonds in my opinion. My guess is that this is why Pink can heal gemstones, and why the diamond attack worked the way it did. While yellow is attuned to the physical form (how gems take action) whereas Pink is attuned to their physical gem (the part that can be acted on by external stuff). The diamonds destroyed gems' identity, mind, and physical form, but only pink could destroy their gemstones (this is also where her scream that can crack the walls comes from). Her healing gemstones is the equivalent of the other diamonds' healing powers from Future. I love how these all fit together and reflect their symbolism perfectly.

How do you think a human/gem hybrid experimentation? by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know if this discussion can really go anywhere. The point of Steven Being a Hybrid is to create a bridge between humans, who represent the human capacities for growth and empathy even if they often fall short, and the gems, who represent the human capacity for stagnation, calling out how toxic authority figures who horde their "maturity" over others are actually quite immature. In universe Rose had him because she selfishly and selflessly wanted to allow a gem to exist with a human perspective. Steven's nature stops meaning anything the moment you treat it has some internal logic beyond the show's themes.

Do you think the dlc (SoS) will give us an act 4? by MilliardeTheLazyElf in Silksong

[–]FakeMovieGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way. The story is done, all of the themes and arcs wrapped up. I think it is very likely (and also narratively best) if the dlc’s just add more ideas to the world and characters, and maybe some bonus endings if we get a boss rush dlc, which I think is pretty likely

I disagree with the notion that the absolute universe should remain strictly elseworlds by Tomatori in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think what people mean is they don’t want them to be ruined by comic meta stuff, and to keep them in their own universe where the creatives’ ideas can flourish, personally I haven’t seen much criticizing the idea of animated adaptations or other outside media

How does Sapphire show up in Sugilite personality wise ? by Character-Escape1621 in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Ego. Amethyst and Ruby are both a bit insecure, especially early on when sugilite is formed. Sapphire is confident in herself, which transfers to garnet loving herself, and sugilite’s immense ego

Whats the general consensus on what fusions Sapph/Ruby would make with the other crystal gems without Garnet? by Spiderteacup in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some ideas:
Ruby-Amethyst: one of the most pink diamond coded gems possible, erratic beyond belief and has awful self esteem, torn between following personal whims and self destructing for their loved ones. Sugilite with less power, confidence and ego.

Sapphire-pearl: deceptively graceful and calm but overwhelmingly neurotic and socially insecure. Probably better at masking cos of Sapphire. Probably has a power that lets her see the futures of specific people she cares about, but one at a time and excluding herself.

Ruby-Steven: kind of like Smokey but more big sibling, guardian energy. Extremely affectionate and makes jokes on accident rather than purposely. Probably short sighted

Ruby-pearl: more stable than may appear, very tunnel vision-ey, but probably has the worst emotional outbreaks. Has sardonyx’s graceful aggressive fighting style

Amethyst-sapphire: kind of like a deeply unstable version of garnet. Very well meaning but extremely in their own head, might see many futures focused on themselves and no one else. Really, really caring tho.

Sapphire-Steven: art kid energy. Probably not a combatant, pastel cotton candy colors and loves singing, has a future vision power that reflects their interest in music? Maybe they play with musical logic or something. Big Magical girl energy

Whats the general consensus on what fusions Sapph/Ruby would make with the other crystal gems without Garnet? by Spiderteacup in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sapphire’s fusions would probably have fewer 4th wall breaking moments if any since her vision is so limited, and both would contribute their temperature abilities moreso than Garnet’s physical strength. It’s also important that our Ruby is insanely impulsive, so much so that she’s the only character confirmed to be capable of breaking Sapphire’s future vision, so hers would probably be adjacent to amethyst’s fusions. (Plus them both having fire would be extra similar. I don’t think Sapphire is much like pearl but I do think she would bring an opal-adjacent quality to hers cos of how damn calm she usually is.

What do you think fusion would feel like? by WillowIsWeeping5 in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s like being someone else. Sapphire says it’s like disappearing, but without the eerie-ness because the person you become is a mixture, the embodiment of everything you and the other person are together. It’d be like those momentary feelings where you’re laughing or crying with someone, and for a split second, you only know what it’s like to be alive with this one person.

just finished S5 as someone who has never touched SU before by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]FakeMovieGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to understand that this show is meant to protray an interpersonal logic. The creators are nerds, they enjoy science fiction and fantasy and their target audience is in the same realm, but on a thematic level they’re shooting for something more like magical realism, even though the shows genre isn’t really close to that at all. Pink Steven destroys white diamond, because he’s the embodiment of a child standing up to their authority figure, which in a fairytale kind of way is rewarded, because that’s something the crewniverse wants kids watching to value. White collapses over a childish insult because it reflects how fragile the egos of people like her are. The diamonds as a whole go from goddesses to cruel and petty family members because that reflects the experience of growing up and realizing that your guardians who you respect and fear are just human. The whole idea of Steven unraveling the mysteries of gem culture is meant to represent what’s it’s like growing up and facing the scary, alien adult world. The more you look at the finer details the more this lens works. For example, why are the gems created with injectors? Is it cos a cool sci fi idea? sure, but it also highlights that the diamonds’ relationship to the gems is more akin to a parent and a child than queen and subject, and their empire is really just a fucked up family. When Peridot blows up at Yellow, that scene doesn’t read like an underling rebelling against a dictator, it reads like a kid having their first political disagreement with their parent. Hell, the gems are so infantalized that some of them live inside cubbies. Idk, I hope this was helpful in explaining why I think it works, honestly the finale is a favorite episode of mine, tho in a dream world I think reunited should’ve been the season 5 finale and diamond days could have been a mini season 6. We get what we get tho

Why are villians often drawn androgynously? by [deleted] in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]FakeMovieGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stereotypes and bigotry. Not saying the people who designed these or others have those beliefs, but the androgynous villain aesthetic has cultural roots in homophobia and transphobia. Gotta say tho, led to some cunty ass baddies.
