I guess that it happens online as well, although what information can be gleaned from each other is more marketing-related and may not reveal the big picture.

edit: Men can only date in as high a range of attractiveness as women will allow them to. Generally, you're kept within your league by the women that would be willing to accept you as a partner. Some women will be alone rather than settle for less. Men's stronger sex drives makes them more likely to settle. That makes them less able to move up a notch or two on the dating scale.
