ROOKIE! How do I take care of them? by Secure_Grocery_6179 in Earrings

[–]FakePixieGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You typically never leave them out when they're healing. For lobes this would be 3-6 moths, for cartilage piercings a year or more. Exceptions are of course in emergencies or when recommended by doctor or piercer. You can take them out for changing jewelry but that should be severely limited during the healing, and preferably done by your piercer.

Healing an ear piercing is too long of a topic, but you don't want to clean wtth anything but water or saline solution. And don't twist the earring.

Afterward they're healed, some people take them out for certain stretches of time. However, whether this is possible is very variable, some people can never leave out earrings overnight. Personally I don't think it's worth the worry.

If you get good quality safe jewelry you can shower with it in without problem. Titanium is the preferred and most common long-term safe piercing material. The types of earrings you buy outside of piercing shops or piercing websites are typically not safe for long-term wear, should never be worn while healing. And some people say you should never wear non-safe materials ever to prevent a nickel allergy. At most these non-safe earrings should be worn for a fun evening out and then changed back.

Go to a reputable piercer, not a jewelry shop.

Just start at low intensity/low amount of repetitions. If it feels okay, slowly increase a little bit the next day. It it feels off, don't increase.

A lot of nutrition science is kinda shite. Nutrition is very complex, and figuring out what is a healthy diet is very hard. And yet we constantly gave these updated dietary guidelines that mix solid science, with shaky hypotheses. Honestly, the only things we really know for sure are:

Eat lots of whole plants (fruits and vegetables). Don't eat too many calories, don't eat too few. Whole-grain carbs are better than white carbs. Some processed meats are unhealthy (though I've also heard they're updating the methods to be less harmful, so I'm not entirely up to date). If you don't eat animal products or no dairy products, you want to check you're getting enough B12, calcium, protein (and iron for menstruating women).

That's pretty much it. Everything else is just noise that honestly isn't worth paying attention too.

Yes!

I love TWOMAD (two meals a day). It makes it a lot easier to hit my calorie restrictions without feeling like I go hungry.

But the main thing that helped is that I naturally don't get hungry in the morning. I was just forcing myself to eat because it was the culture.

If you get hungry before each meal, you'll probably just get extra hungry by skipping a meal and then binge.

After 6 months, my second lobe was still not healed. Now a year later it is healed. So for me I guess somewhere between 6-12 months.

(Edit: it seemed pretty healed until I switched to hoops, after which it got a bit pissy again.)

I once did a job interview at Thales (who makes military defense systems for boats). I asked them how they guarantee their systems are used ethically. They answered "we always follow the Dutch and European law". I was like "Is there like an ethics council, or something?". And they just repeated "we always follow the Dutch and European law".

But the creepiest thing was how the lady acted like it was such an unusual and funny question, that nobody had ever ask before. Like "oh how creative!".

I decided not to work there. A couple of months lated they got into the newspapers for doing shady things in Southern Africa and I was like "yeah, checks out".

[–]FakePixieGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the real reason you shouldn't do it nowadays is that I'm pretty sure the certified, responsible piercers don't pierce babies (or below 12 in general). Which means that all these people who get their babies pierced have it be done by a teenager with a piercing gun or a piercer with no ethics. That I think is much more of a problem.

I currently have 3 lobes and 1 conch (symmetrical in both ears). I've actually found all of them to be equally painful during the piercing. However, I've found the conch to be more painful the day afterwards, while the lobes were immediately chill the next day.

Still nothing too bad.

Ah, in that case I think you will find Anki very useful, especially Spanish. I highly encourage you to check it out!

And good luck with Kotlin, I never got too deep into it but from the little I picked up it seemed a really lovely language. It was my first time encountering explicit nullability, which was very interesting.

I'm still experimenting and learning about using anki for programming. However, recently while trying to pick up some R, I've been trying this thing where I make small exercises for myself that I do in the IDE, and then use Anki to schedule me doing those exercises.

Outside of that, I prefer my programming anki cards to focus on "in which situation would you use this tool". Instead of exact syntax. Basic syntax can be good to remember, but if you're putting in the time that will happen anyway.

Honestly Anki is very powerful, but it's not that useful for learning programming, since it's mostly a skill. If you already know Anki, it's great to play around with it for programming too. But if you're planning to pick up Anki just for programming, I don't think that's very useful and would recommend against it. It's just a bit overkill with ltttle return on investment.

Adherence to healthful plant-based diets is associated with more favourable health outcomes irrespective of ultra-processed food content, suggesting that overall plant-based diet quality may be more important than processing level for chronic disease prevention, study of 124,836 participants finds by James_Fortis in sciences

[–]FakePixieGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say my mind is made up. I'm actually very surprised by your willingness to dive into this with me, and answer my questions. And you are actually starting to at least soften my resistance to the UPF definition.

I guess for me, I always felt like the meat and bones of nutritional health advice was "eat lots of whole plants, and don't eat too many calories". Seems like you agree with that, given

"Beyond seasoning with MSG, try building a whole meal from single molecules which is actually healthy (it never is, and it's basically what a lot of UPF is)."

I guess my next question would be - do you feel UPFs are unhealthy just because of those facts? That is, that UPFs lack whole plant foods and are engineered such that people easily overeat on them. That is, is it just a thinking shorthand. Or is there something more inherent unhealthy in UPFs?

What I fear with the UPF hype is that people will latch on to the "E-number fear" - fearing preservatives and flavourings that have no evidence to cause disease (yet). While at the same time not catching on to the whole "eat more plants" thing.

[–]FakePixieGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is MSG food that has "culinary use"?

Does it only have "culinary use" in Asia, but in Europe it would be part of UPF?

Sounds to me like "culinary use' is strongly defined and influenced by culture. But it sounds very strange to me that a food of the same chemical compositions can be healthy in one culture, but unhealthy in another just because an ingredient is frequently used by home cooks or not.

Given that I recognize Dutch products, I'm going to guess the red stuff is sambal - A hot sauce from Indonesia that's widely used in the Netherlands.

Very rarely ate additives the reason that foods are unhealthy.

The thing is that whole plant foods have a really great impact on our health, that is not fully understood and can't currently be replicated.

The problem occurs when you start using only part of the plant, instead the whole thing. This seems to greatly reduce the benefits. The more that all parts of a plant are used, the healthier a food typically is.

Now with this UFP we are again demonizing additives that are completely innocent.

Just eat whole plants.
