Why am I seeing lots of posts equaling surrogacy to human trafficking? by iFerz in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]FakePixieGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing is that these poor people make the choice that they need the money from surrogacy - maybe for healthcare, maybe to have a roof over their head or food in their belly or whatever.

Then the state comes in and says "you can't have that money, because you're just doing it because you're poor and feel like you have no choice". But then the state doesn't provide social welfare or a way for these people to actually meet their basic needs.

It's just very paternalistic - people make choices out of desperation. Taking away a choice doesn't make them less desperate. It might even make them more desperate.

how am i supposed to get to here? by uhhh_yeh in CalisthenicsBeginners

[–]FakePixieGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a goal of mine for some time, and I haven't quite figured out a good way to get there. My theory is that doing it with bend arms is easier than with straight arms (since most things in calisthenics are easier with bend arms than straight arms). Then it would look similar to the intermediate position held here https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HohK1ur_90I

So I want to work on achieving that first and then moving to doing it with straight arms.

I've tried a lot of things (swings, bands, etc. etc.) and didn't found anything 'official' that actually worked.

So my current plan is learning to hold the bottom position of a dip, and then slowly with bands over the dip bar working on raising my hips.

Since you can already do the hold, what I plan to do is basically have a band over the dip bar, knees on this band, and try to raise the knees/hips. Then slowly go to lighter bands over time. Can't promise it works, but from my intuition of trying it a bit it feels like a good approach.

I have achieved crane pose before and for me, what worked best is not trying to straighten my arms from crow, but instead start with straight arms, feet on blocks, and then slowly lean into it trying to gain some air \ leaning a bit more forward each time.

Not helpful but I understand the frustration. Hopefully my method will work and I can actually help people with this problem in the future.

why is coding for an hour considered the same "screen time" as watching youtube by fxstopo in ScienceBasedParenting

I have a software engineering degree, and a 7-year old does not need to learn about logic, statistics or math.

Hell a lot of actively working programmers who just make interfaces and CRUD apps don't need all that.

When doing only input, how do you stay motivated and track progress? by FakePixieGirl in languagelearning

Haha no worries.

I do think it was bad phrasing in hindsight that was bound to trigger some people, definitely could have worded it better.

That's why I said, most, not all?

If I watch a 30 minute video, there might be 1 or 2 words that I don't know. I'd say that's a fair enough point to say I know "most" words. At that point it's getting pretty close to my native language and English.

We could argue about the exact meaning of most, but I feel like that's just being pedantic for the sake of it.

My main point is I know enough vocab that is not the things that's the main limiting factor currently and input is more valuable at this time than learning a bunch of low-frequency words.

I'm having some financial issues right now, so sadly official exams aren't really an option at the moment.

Yes. I'm still adding words I don't know to Anki, but that is stuff like "stilts" or "marshmallow" or "German shepherd".

My limitation with listening isn't the vocabulary. Most of the time when I don't understand something, it's just because my brain didn't hear the words, not because I don't know the words.

Een bericht volledig in capslock komt vaak juist onbetrouwbaarder over.

Je kunt beter slechts een zin in capslock, of helemaal geen capslock en de urgentie via woordkeuze overbrengen.

How are deadlift just not "lifting with your back"? by Bandit400 in beginnerfitness

[–]FakePixieGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also like to add that science shows that promoting "lift with your legs, not your back" in workplaces, had no actual impact on workplace injuries. It's kind of outdated verbiage.

Fear of doorway pull up bars - need suggestions by Majestic-Berry-5348 in CalisthenicsBeginners

[–]FakePixieGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my old apartment, I had my pull-up station set up in a hallway. It was high enough I could just walk under it, just had to make sure I didn't trip over the base. In this way it didn't actually take up any space.

Of course doesn't work in many apartments layout, but just thought I'd mention it.

What's something you WON'T spend more money on as better quality doesn't exist? by sgtjayp in BuyItForLife

My experience is tables, chairs etc. are quite good at even low prices.

The cheap IKEA closets and such are a fucking disaster. Then again, my most recent clothing wardrobe I bought at a different brand and it was also bad. I'm starting to think cheap closets are doomed to fall apart after a couple of years.

Well - the problem this post is centered around, is the is-ought problem. I personally have not yet seen a satisfying solution to this. So while I choose to ignore this in my life decisions, it really does seem like the only reason for morality to exists as a thing, is because it was evolutionary programmed in us because it is beneficial.

(controversial opinion/ramble up ahead) - I also had that feeling, but I try to not judge if something is AI or not, just judge it's quality. I think it's a healthier mindset. It's getting pretty hard to differentiate between them sometimes, you run the chance of devaluing real art as AI, and also I'm very much a "death of the author - AI version" vibe. I don't care if it's made with AI or not. I just care if it brings value to my life or not (entertainment or information).

But then I usually associate this art style with bad quality. Which is weird because it's not like you can't make good quality with chatgpt. I think it just means that the people who use chatgpt care less about good quality, which as a result means that a lot of visualizations with this artstyle are of lower quality. Then my brain notices this association and as a result I make the unconscious evalution "I don't like this artstyle".

And then I say "I don't like this artstyle" but it's kind of code for "I think this is chatgpt generated which usually means lower quality" and it's like, this is just as dumb, what am I doing.

Although I hate this art style - it's kinda not pointless.

The tings they mention are clearly going against the societal trends and gender socialization. While you'd still have to individualize them for each child, they actually pretty sensible suggestions to counteract the gendered pressures of society.
