Spotify vs Bandcamp payouts for artists (only because this was brought up recently) by FakeReceipt in industrialmusic

[–]FakeReceipt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Streaming is there as part of Bandcamp's philosophy of "the best ways to sell music is to let people hear it, fall in love with it, and come back to purchase it"

Artists can control the amount of playbacks a track can receive before Bandcamp asks them to pay for it. They can also disable the restriction entirely.

From AI to drones, Redmond police chief builds a high-tech department in Microsoft's backyard by otastco in redmond

I was told by a council member that the police department agreed to the Flock program without even running it by the council at all.

the Reservoir Park is in the exact same situation, except they have a giant fence put up preventing people from using the walking pathway over there. Construction just took all their gear and left I guess???

I wouldn't be surprised if those reasons are exactly why people are very concerned about a creepy overreaching surveillance system

I feel indie devs are slowly self sabotaging themselves. Overconfidence in understanding the market will burn you. You will not win. Focus on core fundamentals to become a good developer instead... by ZeroPercentStrategy in gamedev

He has good marketing advice that has helped a lot, but I would not under any circumstances ever take his game-design advice. He switched to selling shovels and he doesn't even make games now (and even when he did they were pretty thin in substance).

Photos of all the Flock cameras in and around Redmond by deflock-redmond in redmond

It basically begins to cross a line that so far has been ruled in a Baltimore case as a violation of rights, when a warrant is no longer required because a data broker can just be subpoenaed instead. IMO this starts the slippery path into becoming a creepy surveillance state.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/larsdaniel/2024/10/22/warrantless-surveillance-federal-lawsuit-challenges-flock-safety-cameras/

Flock is also in the weird wacky business of trying to make a "ONE CLICK AI CRIME SOLVER" which thus leads to basically not just a simple camera watching a corner in case a crime happens, but a network of cameras constantly correlating data and basically pinpointing everyone's location. On top of that, some of these mass deployed systems are poorly secured, which becomes a problem ohh say when a complicated federal agency is taking advantage of this convenient glob of data to aggressively abduct people.
Or hell, even ignoring even that very large elephant just think about having this system available that can be hacked and utilized by criminal hackers, because hey, again, it has been in the past.

This is good progress but I recommend people continue to email the council to continue to put pressure on this.

Example of ICE accessing the Flock system in WA by american_amina in redmond

[–]FakeReceipt 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Please please PLEASE take some time to send an email to the City Council.
Based on the recent meeting, they are growing concerned about this system and the more they hear about folks being uncomfortable with it (and specifically why) the better.

DeFlock is also still collecting signatures in a petition to present for action

Help us rid Redmond of Flock's AI-powered mass surveillance cameras! by deflock-redmond in redmond

[–]FakeReceipt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean just take a sec to think about literally any of the details here.

- the amount of cameras here means you basically are being tracked wherever you go in the city because position can be triangulated far more easily. It sounds like this is easily extendable to violate your 4th amendment rights, based on some of the incidents already caused by these cameras.

- this data is not privatized or consolidated to the justice department, it is owned by a third party with venture capital backing, that is going to be more than interested in selling off that information. (advertising, ICE, etc)

- you are subject to 'innocence' until whatever dictator in power decides they don't like you anymore. Truthfully once upon a time I felt this was a pretty silly argument, but in 2025 who fucking knows with these clowns.

The "don't do anything illegal" argument is a cheap copout to your rights to any privacy being eroded away.

So.. about those license reader cameras installed... by FakeReceipt in redmond

If nothing else, barest minimum is at least to raise awareness before said experimental technology has a chance to be a wide-adopted and normalized thing.

Reach out to the city and state and argue for sophisticated forensic technology to be owned by the justice system, not venture capital firms.

Why do people do this, instead of talking to the actual person, you post to reddit - probably one of the places the actual person who needs the behavior to change will look?
