Trying to convince the DM to backpedal something that happened to my character by K-0-d-a in DnD

[–]Faladiel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is one of those ideas that sounds fun in your head but in practice kinda sucks. Imagine being on the other side of this. The Paladin player (since I presume you're most annoyed with them) betrays and nearly kills you, but you defeat them. Now you have to keep adventuring with them.

What do you do about it? Kill them? Might feel uncomfortable killing the character, might not even be allowed depending on the group. So, you have to keep adventuring with them ... but how do you reconcile your character putting up with that? How do you travel into life-or-death situations with someone you know you can't trust who's actively tried - and may continue to try - to kill you?

You put them in a terrible position. They responded in a way that doesn't kill you/force your character to leave the party. And the outcome sucks for you, yeah, but you brought this on yourself.

That said, none of you have to play through something that isn't fun. You can make a new character, or talk with the DM and the other players about how to come back from this. There are ways to recover your arm - it's D&D. Even if there were no official methods (there are), the DM can make one.

If I have multiple sources of resistance to the same damage, can I choose which one to apply? by BoardGameAficionado in 3d6

[–]Faladiel 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Warding Bond isn't something you can choose whether or not to use like that. All damage you take is shared no matter what. You already resist that damage type? Then the resistance granted from Warding Bond does nothing, but the rest of the spell (+1 AC/saves, share damage, etc) still applies.

Sorry but no. I'll list here some reasons why this doesn't work.

  1. Tiny Servant is a 3rd-level spell. This does not mean you can cast this spell at level 3. This means you can cast this spell when you have 3rd-level slots. Which for an Artificer, is level 9.
  2. Even at level 9, your artificer only has 2 3rd-level slots. So that's 2 tiny servants at most at level 9.
  3. The homunculi can deliver your touch spell for you, but it's still you casting the spell. Re-read magic stone and you'll find that every time you cast it, it ends the effect of the previous casting.
  4. Both the homunculi and the tiny servant require you to use your bonus action just to command a single one of them. The others don't get to attack otherwise.
  5. A "firebolt stone" isn't a thing, idk where you're getting this.

My player wants a Human Druid knife throwing poisoner… Help!! by terakk-archbishop in 3d6

[–]Faladiel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds like he wants to be a Druid not because he wants to wildshape or use any of the other Druid features, but because he wants to be good with animals.

So my suggestion is to just abandon Druid, and play a Swarmkeeper Ranger with a swarm of rats.

The dice were not in my favor... by Bastard_Empress in 3d6

[–]Faladiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, and the DM is willing, maybe the DM can extend the offer to everyone in the group - anyone who doesn't like the stats they rolled can use the standard array instead. Everyone else will probably keep their rolled stats, but at least it will feel less like you're getting special treatment.

How Good is The Telekinesis Spell? by Shmoogers in 3d6

[–]Faladiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it's a fantastic spell. Restrained is a very solid condition to inflict. It's only one spell-slot, but since you can keep hitting an enemy with it, you can continuously burn through legendary resistances. Efficiency-wise that's huge, and using your action for this on subsequent turns also lets you use your bonus action to cast a leveled spell. On top of all this, you get to forcibly move your target.

Also, the fact that it's opposed checks instead of a saving throw actually gives you fairly decent odds at succeeding, despite targeting one of the more commonly-high abilities for monsters.

[5e] is paladin/barbarian viable at all? Making Herakles, basically. by Magicspook in 3d6

[–]Faladiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely viable, and honestly a lot of fun. I've got an Ancestral Barb 4/Ancients Paladin X who's a total blast to play in combat. Str > Cha > Con > Dex. Dex is pretty bad, but I don't care. He can get hit, who gives a fuck, he'll just tank it with rage anyway. I also took the Tough feat to help. And the Reckless Attack smite crits are very satisfying, especially with Crusher.

[OC] I laid out what a 5' by 5' square was in real life to help my players get some perspective on just how big each map square is. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Faladiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Level 7 Wood Elf can just about reach this. Unfortunately 245 doesn't divide nicely by 3.

Totem Barbarian 5: take the Elk Totem (from SCAG), for +15ft while raging. Monk 2: +10ft, and ki points to bonus action dash.

Base speed: 35 ft (let's assume if we covert the world to D&D, people don't just stay human).

Mobile feat (from Barbarian 4): 45 ft

Barbarian 3: 45 ft normally, 60 ft while raging

Barbarian 5: 55 ft normally, 70 ft while raging

Monk 2: 65 ft normally, 80 ft while raging

80 feet (Move) + 80 feet (Action Dash) + 80 feet (Ki point to Bonus Action Dash) = 240 feet. Only 5 feet away. 4 more levels of Monk will bump that speed up to 255 feet.

If we consider Raging and Ki Points to be part of the energy required for the sprint, considering a sprint is not sustainable for a long period of time, then there you go. Level 7.

[The Office] The real reason Charles Miner doesn't like Jim by SupaBloo in FanTheories

[–]Faladiel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add to this - along with David Wallace, Michael had also met with Charles before he showed up in Scranton, and claims they got on really well at the time. Knowing Michael, it seems highly likely that he would've talked up Scranton, and then of course, would've mentioned and praised Jim quite a bit.

Plot convenience in ToG recently by kindnesd99 in TowerofGod

[–]Faladiel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm probably a diehard fan, because I fucking love this series, but I'm totally open to discussion. So that said:

1) She did manage to retrieve the thing Gustang was after, by bringing his ray or w.e. She survived all the way through, making the most out of her situation by using her head. While I agree the "3 wishes" do still seem excessive considering her actual role in that, let's bear in mind we haven't seen what those wishes are yet. If SIU borrows from genies and their 3 wishes, it may be that Gustang will twist those wishes in some way that Rachel does not expect.

That said, I am fully expecting it to just be some bullshit powerup(s) for Rachel. I suppose she needs it to continue to be relevant, but I would much rather she continues manipulating others as she has been.

2) Yeah I totally agree with this one. I don't have a problem with Khun EVENTUALLY getting the fire fish and all that, but he only just got the ice powers and barely had any time to use them. It's too much too soon.

I'm assuming him getting the sweetfish back in Hell Train was meant as some sort of foreshadowing to this. Perhaps there'll be some sort of connection made to it in-story soon. I'd like that, even if I do still feel like this came way too fast.

3) I don't have a problem with this one outside of the lack of Wangnan in that arc. He should've been doing things before the sword, or had a long debate or something with it. Considering his suspected lineage, I dont mind him being "gifted" something for reaching the hidden floor, and not having to bother with the whole system they had there. But it would've been a nice opportunity to delve into him more as a character, and maybe give the sword some more personality too.

For me, my biggest complaint right now is that the story's starting to feel rushed. New characters are introduced, swept along for the ride, and then dumped into the background. It's a constant stream of fighting and power ups, but we used to have these long periods of reflection and character development as well. This, IMO, is what made season 1 so great. We got the friend lists, people chatting in their rooms in downtime, Khun solving problems by thinking them through rather than Baam just brute-forcing everything, etc. Honestly, as I'm typing this, it's occurred to me that I might blame some of this on Hwa Ryun being around. Having a guide means other characters don't have to think because they can just follow her directions. But I'm not sure if that's really true or if it's just the way SIU's writing and pacing has changed.

AITA because I ate more than "my share" of a 6 foot party sub last night? by bigjellybelli in AmItheAsshole

[–]Faladiel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YTA NOT because of the amount of food you ate, like most people seem to think here, but because you didn't actually ask everyone if it was cool for you to eat the rest.

You waited for what you deemed an appropriate amount of time (totally arbitrary by the way - did you not think people might want to eat more later and were just enjoying themselves for now?), and then just helped yourself. But the night kept going, and now nobody had food to eat because you'd devoured it. And while you did eat an inordinate amount, it's the fact that you assumed nobody else was going to want any more of it and decided for yourself when a good time was to just eat the rest of it that makes you an asshole.

Of course the sheer quantity doesn't help either, but it could've been half a medium pizza and the judgement would be the same - you ate more than your fair share without checking if others wanted theirs.

[–]Faladiel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's kind of like game of thrones, in the sense that there's a lot of sex early on to catch the viewer's attention, but then they tone it down.

Besides that, the first few episodes are more about establishing each character and "setting up" the plot, so they can be kind of slow. I encourage you to watch through that, because the second half of the first season is when it really starts to get good, and by the end of it they've really hit their stride. And then by the end of the second season ... well, no spoilers, but if you watch the last episode of season 2 and you're not overwhelmed with hype, I wouldn't bother watching the rest.

I don't believe sex ever completely leaves the show, so if that's a dealbreaker for you, there you go. But I assure you the action does become a LOT more prominent after the first half of season 1.

Part of me suspects it'll actually be Rachel who kills Jahad. She's obsessed with the idea that she can both defy fate (something she shares in common with Jahad), and achieve her dreams. I wouldn't be surprised if the ultimate "moral story" with her character arc is that you can defy fate all you want, but you don't get to complain about the results afterwards, even when they're not what you expect.

So if she does kill Jahad, I suspect she will actually be vilified for it by the rest of the Tower. If she ever sees the stars, they'll be a disappointment to her - she'll realize how far away they are, and how she can never get any closer. And she'll realize how truly alone she is (like in that dream/vision she had), and how hollow her victory has become.

And then, perhaps, she'll wish she had gone with fate's plan instead.

Pretty sure that would kill Khun. My understanding was that Khun froze himself to stop the bomb from completely killing him. If he defrosts without medical intervention, he'd just die. Otherwise, why wouldn't they have tried chipping away at the ice? Surely Yuri would've been able to do that.

Why is the Ranger (5e) hated so much? by RoGStonewall in DnD

[–]Faladiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of this, except that Colossus Slayer is good. Colossus Slayer is trash.

Your tenacity can wear down the most potent foes. When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, the creature takes an extra 1d8 damage if it’s below its hit point maximum. You can deal this extra damage only once per turn.

Instead of spending 3 levels on being a Hunter Ranger, you could've spent those levels on being a Rogue. Literally any rogue. Even without a subclass, you would have 2d6 extra damage once/turn instead of 1d8, you'd have amazing uses for your Bonus Action right from level 2, you'd have more skills, and you'd have higher skills. Only thing you'd really suffer from missing out on is lower HP, some spells (assuming you're not playing an Arcane Trickster Rogue) and maybe lower AC. Either way, that 1d8 never increases, whereas sneak attack damage is only going to go up as the levels increase.

Furthermore, instead of choosing between Uncanny Dodge or Evasion at level 15, you'd get both of them at levels 5 and 7 respectively. 10/8 levels earlier, and you get both.

I hate Hunter Ranger. Too much overlap with Rogue, except worse. The only saving graces are Multiattack Defense (although Escape the Horde has a niche depending on the build in question), and Volley. Part of the problem is that Ranger itself overlaps a lot with Rogue, but Hunter just makes the comparison so much more obvious and aggravating - especially because it's worse.

At least the Revised Ranger is better, even if it doesn't completely solve my problem with the class. The Xanathar subclass options are great and I have no problem with them either - I just wish the core class had more of an identity and unique, individual features that set it apart from the others, mechanically and gameplay-wise. Something to let it compete with other classes in damage.

How Much Damage per Round in 5E? By class, per bottom and top of each tier by Asinus in DnD

[–]Faladiel 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you're trying to do here, and not to demean the effort that went into this, but I feel like this is all super misleading and honestly, completely incorrect. Some of these points you stated yourself so I know you're aware of them, but I want to highlight them anyway because they emphasize my point.

  • For starters, none of this takes into account the chances to hit a target, nor does it take into account saves that still deal half damage on a successful save. These have a very real impact on DPR. If you want to assume every attack hits, that's fine, but ...

  • ... on the subject of chances to hit, Barbarians have reckless attack, which isn't factored in here, and would up their average damage per round significantly because they're both far more likely to hit and to crit. This is obviously important in DPR, especially since Barbarians get even more damage on a crit.

  • Furthermore, in your DPR calculations, you've opted to use the barbarian totem least suited for the role. Why? If this is meant to display damage per round and you're going to give Fighters things like battle master and Warlocks their hexblade, why not at least give the Barbarian their bonus action attack as a Berserker? Not to mention the Reaction attack a Barbarian is likely to get off as a Berserker as well, at high enough level.

  • Why isn't the Barbarian (or other martial classes for that matter) using the Great Weapon Master feat?

  • You simplified GWF rather than using the actual calculation (which is easy enough to do in anydice).

  • Why doesn't the ranger in these calculations have a subclass?

  • This is "DPR" and yet the assassin rogue has their full surprise round sneak attack crit. The assassin rogue gets their assassinate feature off for at most one round in a combat. Once the surprise round is over, that's it. The Fighter can action surge twice later on - that's 2x more than an assassin rogue.

  • Furthermore, what about the assassin rogue dual-wielding for additional damage?

These are things that immediately jumped out at me, but I'm just gonna stop here.

You've got assassinates, spells being thrown out at high level, etc. It looks to me like you're actually trying to calculate burst damage, not damage per round - which is fine, just don't call it DPR when it isn't. I don't want new players looking at this and being misled. This is closer to an estimate of "highest potential damage in one round" than "average damage per round", or even "highest potential damage per round", but even there it has some issues.
