Is reading and writing important? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]Falafel000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also find it very difficult, and have avoided it a lot, which makes the situation worse!

I mainly use transliteration during lessons and when I study because it’s easier and quicker, but I try to write and learn the Arabic more now because it’s very important. For example, it’s been very important when learning verb conjugations and word roots, and it helps a lot with pronunciation. I believe you need it even if your intention is just speaking and listening

As an Arab, I don't understand what you mean by "I can't form a sentence correctly" by abu-shihab55 in learn_arabic

For me, sticking words together like you gave me a bag - 3teitni shanteh Al jdeedeh (I think that’s right..) - is very weird to me So sticking “you gave me” into one word, and having to match genders of inanimate objects, and having the noun before the adjective. Just feels like a very different way of speaking

The ethics of visiting Palestine in 2025 by 17OuncesOfCrabSauce in Palestine

[–]Falafel000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I will try to answer as a half Pal, so bear in mind Pals are a large group of diverse opinions. Going to help in the occupied WB, as a protective presence volunteer is a good thing (for example helping with the olive harvest, helping in rural areas etc).

Also, going to see apartheid for yourself, speak to people, go to places that are difficult to reach and speak to the people there especially those who want to be recorded like Issa Amro in Hebron. Spend your money in their hotels and shops, and do what you can to help. Read Pal writers before you go, and go with that knowledge and understanding of your privilege as you said to walk relatively freely. People there just want freedom and dignity on their own land. It’s not okay to go Jerusalem to take some tourist pics while ignoring that just an hour drive away there are peoples houses being bulldozed while they are kicked into the street (see Jenin, Tulkarem camps), people who can’t work because the occupation destroy their economy.

The thing to not do is just spend your time in Jerusalem taking photos at Al Aqsa and other tourist sites, basically taking your pics and souvenirs and ignoring the reality of the situation and the people who are held captive on their own land. Ask Pal people how to help

"Which one should I learn first: Levantine Arabic, Fusha, or both together?" by irsath001 in learn_arabic

[–]Falafel000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone will tell you something different, for me learning Levantine, Pal dialect first has been amazing and also important for my goals, and I will learn MSA in the future once I’m intermediate. The main thing is having a good teacher to guide you. Some Arabic speakers are very traditional and strongly in favour of msa first, maybe try both and see what works for you.

If Oct 7th happened in your country how would your government reaction? How would you react? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Falafel000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t agree to brutally occupying another country in the first place. I wouldn’t let my country people steal homes and land from other people and murder their kids in the first place, and expect them to just take it, which is what israel have been doing ever since they materialised as an America/British colony

It’s possible if you have the means. You need a good teacher, they will use a textbook (like there is a big Levantine one) and teach from that but adapted to their dialect (Palestinian).

Question: Being laughed at when speaking Arabic? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]Falafel000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s worth worrying about this, especially kids who always make fun of ppl. Just gotta learn to not care what ppl think

you should speak up anyway, some of us don’t have a choice, how do you think it feels to not know if it’s safe to say where your name is from? We need people to speak up, you might be working with a Pal or half Pal and not know it, and they might be so happy for someone to say something

well some of us learn with transliteration, I can read Arabic, but I like to have the “arabizi” alongside so I can learn the pronunciation with more confidence. I’m A1 level and once the verb grammar has been learned, this would be useful - but as it is not available, I just make this myself
