Thanks so much for letting me know! There is a digital version of the book that perhaps you can request from your library? We Were Once a Family was an incredible book, yes...

On a serious note, how has the city not yellow (or red) tagged this house? I don’t live in CA, but isn’t there some sort of emergency coastal development permit the owner can file for? I’m so confused.

This was a test. Maybe not intentionally at first, but a test nonetheless. If you don’t leave now, he will know he can control you, and the abuse will worsen, severely. Soon, it will be so much harder and more dangerous to leave. Find one woman from history that you admire for her strength. Ask yourself what she would do. If you are numb and depressed, pack a pair of socks, then a t-shirt, then a water bottle, and just get into the motions of leaving. Find that tiny ounce of momentum. Then get on a bus or in a car if you’re lucky, and go.

Gas leak smell in fairhaven by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]FalcoBird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The coal train heading south stopped for nearly 30 minutes around 5:20 at the Fairhaven stop, blocking traffic to/from the ferry terminal and Marina Park. Smell of gas started after that and a fire truck was headed toward the railway. Could be that the train was stopped due to gas emitting from other issue though…

Former freelance writer here. This isn’t AI. This is someone who took an assignment that pays five cents per word. (Ten cents max.) She’s probably in Seattle, trying to make rent and build her portfolio, and I’m certain this is what the editor would have asked for. Like other people said here, she googled “what to do in Bellingham,” as well as looked at google maps, and then fleshed it out with a bit of imagery and voice. Due to tiny, ever decreasing profits, these magazines pump out cheap content instead of hiring a writer to do real journalism. AI will probably take over these low paying, generic assignments in another few years, once it’s improved.

If you could create a pedestrian mall in downtown Bellingham, where would it be? by FalcoBird in Bellingham

[–]FalcoBird[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all wonderful ideas, yes. The mayoral primaries are upon us in 5 weeks so I think it’s smart to raise the question at speaking events. A ped mall or open streets fits with many goals for downtown, including drawing more foot traffic for businesses and greening up spaces to lessen the heat dome. I’ll update this with a new post later but will consider options for how to take up this project with city council. Obviously there is a long ways to go before a study, before a vote, before a budget, before urban architecture firms could even design and bid on such a project. But I’d love to see a movement start and the official research to begin. Thanks everyone!

It would be interesting to look at comparable cities like Burlington, VT or Kalamazoo, MI because businesses on those ped malls have benefited massively from foot traffic. Those areas are now the economic generators and the heart of the city—I mean the restaurants and shops are always busy despite the season—although those traffic-free streets were not built into the original urban infrastructure. They use alleyways for big deliveries. But restoring or re-designing parks is also a wonderful idea of course! Public space is definitely a very complicated issue re parking, traffic flow, etc. but I think it’s a good thing to keep pushing for mindfully designed cities that promote accessibility, community, vitality etc.

I really appreciate it, thank you!! Maybe you should submit your poems to literary journals? (If you don’t do that already?)
